Six decisions from Tinubu, 36 govs meeting

President Bola Tinubu, in the company of Vice President Kashim Shettima, met with the 36 state governors and the Minister, Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The meeting was held at the State House in Abuja on Thursday.

The meeting was necessitated by the rising price of food items and insecurity, and delayed/non-payment of salaries and gratuities owed workers, retirees and pensioners, amongst others.

This was disclosed in a tweet posted on X by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga

Onanuga stated that “the meeting agreed on common ground to address some of the challenges currently facing the country especially the rising cost of food and insecurity.

“After extensive deliberations, the President and Governors agreed to work together to solve the problems and tackle the economic pressure being faced by the citizens.”

Below are the key takeaways from the meeting:

1. On addressing insecurity which is also affecting farming and food production, President Tinubu made three key pronouncements.

2. On the rising cost of food: The President directed that the State Governments and Federal government should collaborate to increase local food production.

The President advised against the idea of food importation and price control when local food producers should be encouraged to produce more food.

3. The President advised Governors to follow the example of Kano State in dealing with the hoarding of food for profiteering by commodities merchants.

He directed the Inspector-General of Police, National Security Adviser and Department of State Security Services to monitor warehouses hoarding food items across the country and stop profiteering by merchants.

4. The President charged Governors to pay attention to livestock development in their states and increase production most especially poultry and fishing products.

5. The President pleaded with Governors to ensure all salary arrears to workers and gratuities to retired workers and pensioners are cleared as a way to put money into the hands of the people since states are now getting more monthly FAAC revenue. Spend the money, don’t spend the people, he urged the governors.

6. President Tinubu implored the Governors to create more economic opportunities for the youths in their states to keep them more productively engaged.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESIDENT BOLA TINUBU'S MEETING WITH STATE GOVERNORS TODAY AT THE STATE HOUSE

President Bola Tinubu in company of Vice President Kashim Shettima today at the State House met with the 36 States Governors and the FCT Minister. The meeting agreed on common ground to addressing some of the challenges currently facing the country especially the rising cost of food and insecurity.

After extensive deliberations the President and Governors agreed to work together to solve the problems and tackle the economic pressure being faced by the citizens. Below are the key takeaways from what the President told the Governors to do:

1. On addressing insecurity which is also affecting farming and food production, President Tinubu made 3 key pronouncements

A. More police personnel to be recruited to strengthen the force.

B. President Tinubu informed the Governors that the Federal Government will work with them and the National Assembly towards putting in place a mechanism that will engender state police instead of the vigilantes that are being used in some states.

C. The President charged the Governors to strengthen their Forest Rangers and arm them to keep all the forest safe from criminals.

D. Modalities for State Police and addressing security issues to be discussed further at National Economic Council.

2. On rising cost of food: The President directed that the State Governments and Federal government should collaborate to increase local food production. The President advised against the idea of food importation and price control when local food producers should be encouraged to produce more food.

3. President advised Governors to follow the example of Kano State in dealing with hoarding of food for profiteering by commodities merchants. Basically the president said absolutely nothing!!. This reads as if this meeting was held as a formality. 🤔

He didn't need to call a meeting to say these things he could have sent these in a text message to the 36 governors and IGP

1. On addressing insecurity which is also affecting farming and food production, President Tinubu made three key pronouncements.
Essentially nothing, no tactics, no strategy, more like just pretending to be doing something.

2. On the rising cost of food: The President directed that the State Governments and Federal government should collaborate to increase local food production.
Even if food production will be increased, it will take 3-4 years to notice any impact realistically, A lot of people would have died by then ? The farm is not bigger than last year ? The farmer who had a hoe last year doesnt have a tractor this year ? The storage facilities are still the same. This is passing the buck. Food security is a national security problem.

The President advised against the idea of food importation and price control when local food producers should be encouraged to produce more food.
Food importation is bad, everyone knows that. Has the government met with the Large scale farmers? Can the ministers of Agriculture, tell us what we produce and by how much we need to increase produce? Bring in Agricultural franchises and set up in every state, Farming has to be done scientifically with mechanization, tractors, harvesters, hybrid seeds, pesticides, fertilizers, farmers insurance. Its patronizing for the president to keep telling them not to import but increase food production ? How will they do this ? By Magic ? We have NNPC and yet we have not been able to get energy right, but we do not have a similar organization for farmers, we just expect a bunch of local farmers to replace the importation.Just like that...lol

Lets not mistake storage for hoarding, Farmers should not be abused as well, if politicians cannot lower their own income, why are farmers expected to sell all their products at cheap prices, Are farmers not in the same economy as everyone else. If a farmer sells everything for cheap but seeds, fertilizers, labour, cost of petrol for tractors is skyrocketing. How will the farmer survive the farming season. A responsible leader should take responsibility. Farmers farm for profit, they are not the ones responsible to subsidize food in Nigeria. They also have financial responsibilities and prices are skyrocketing.Nigeria doesnt make tractors, tractor prices just doubled in price with dollar exchange rates.

4. The President charged Governors to pay attention to livestock development in their states and increase production most especially poultry and fishing products.
This also lacks strategy or any expertise ?Are they going to start poultry production in government house ? The poultry feeds have doubled in price, corn is a staple in making these feeds. Mr President what is the strategy ? Are we going to start a poultry in Aso rock ?

5. The President pleaded with Governors to ensure all salary arrears to workers and gratuities to retired workers and pensioners are cleared as a way to put money into the hands of the people since states are now getting more monthly FAAC revenue. Spend the money, don’t spend the people, he urged the governors.
This should be enforced, there should be checks and balances in place to make sure the monies get to the end user. This is not business as usual.

6. President Tinubu implored the Governors to create more economic opportunities for the youths in their states to keep them more productively engaged.
At the end of the day, the states cannot be responsible for all the youths, if so we would not need a president, we would be okay with just state governors. The federal government should also create opportunities, also private sector should be saddled with creating opportunities for youth, people hiring foreigners, should only be doing that if there is no competent person in Nigeria.

Food security has to addressed, when energy was an issue, energy had to be subsidized, why is food any different ?Why are we expecting the poor farmer to boost production overnight? Its not good enough to tell the security to look for hoarders, everybody knows hoarding is not the problem. We need scientific and mechanized farming. We need hybrid seeds, storage facilities, pesticides, fertilizers, technical expertise. There is a reason food importation has been rampant before now. We have so many senators, house of representatives, ministers, advisers, special advisers and this is the best we come out with, we have problems peculiar to Nigeria. The government needs to tackle these. If not it will only get worse?

They said he built Lagos ....let's see how Nigeria will be built

Stop herdsmen....if you see them roaming kill the cattle as share the meat. The cattles are destroying farms produce leading to food crisis

Stop Fulani herdsmen again...they are killing the agrarian communities of middle belt

Stop and stop kidnapping and armed bandits in the North....they are discouraging farmers

Baba should grow some balls and stop these ...

Finally ! Encourage large scale farming. But mechanized equipment give farmers subsidies

Addressing food insecurity without minding farmer's security ?
Discussing 'terrorism', yet avoiding the mention of 'fulani herdmen'.

Most of you APC supporters are something else.

Let me explain in simple terms what the young man you quoted was trying to explain.

If fire engulfed your house, everybody is running up and down. You as a father, called your sons and said "there is fire, this fire must be put out. Make sure the fire doesn't keep burning. "

You leave.

That's exactly what tinibu did.

98% of Nigerian governors are lazy and clueless but their people wont hold them responsible for it. What's stopping most states from investing massively in large scale farming and tourism(some Nigerian state has a rich culture and beautiful landscape than Zanziba, look at what Zanziba is today) instead of white elephants project like airports undecided . Awolowo built the first TV station, Stadium, free education program in Africa with cocoa money and the total revenue from the cocoa is not up to the FAAC allocation that these wicked governors are pocketing. Governors are the major problem in Nigeria

Nothing was said. We are talking of immediate actions Tinubu is talking about increasing food production. From where?
In every challenge solutions come in the form of short term, medium term and long term solutions.
In the short term we may import to augment what is available. There is no food anywhere in Nigeria to increase production.
In the medium term and long term create and provide credit to verifiable farmers. In the long term train farmers and plan for mechanised farming on a large scale. States that are willing to provide land especially from states of origin of most herders provide ranches and ban open grazing. Provide security to farmers.
This is why we want at least HND holders as our leaders.
