The Proposed Parliamentary System of Government by Senator Prince Ned Nwoko Optimal Approach for a Multi-Ethnic Country like Nigeria

Friday February I6, 2024.

By Godwin Obire

The parliamentary system of government is a form of democratic government that is characterized by a fusion of powers between the legislative and executive branches of government. In a parliamentary system, the head of government (the Prime Minister) is elected by the legislature (parliament) and is accountable to it. This system often promotes greater stability and efficiency in government, as the executive branch is dependent on the support of the legislative branch to remain in power.

In contrast, a democratic system of government, such as a presidential system, separates the executive and legislative branches of government more distinctly. The head of government (the President) is elected separately from the legislature and may not necessarily have the support of the legislative branch, which can lead to gridlock and inefficiency in governance.

For Nigeria, a parliamentary system of government may be more suitable for several reasons. Firstly, Nigeria is a diverse country with multiple ethnic and religious groups, making it difficult for one individual to represent all factions as a President. A parliamentary system allows for power-sharing among different parties and groups, promoting inclusivity and consensus-building.

Secondly, Nigeria has a history of political instability and corruption, which can be mitigated in a parliamentary system where the Prime Minister is accountable to parliament and can be removed through a vote of no confidence. This can help prevent the concentration of power in an individual leader and promote transparency and accountability in governance.

The parliamentary system of government may offer Nigeria a more effective and stable form of governance that is better suited to its diverse and complex political landscape.

It may not stop corruption but it would reduce it... But that's not the advantage of parliamentary system of government

1) you cant be as dull s Tinubu or atiku and be active in parliamentary system retirement ages are around 60 even obi would be considered too old

Y because you would have to defend your policy every damn week, question would be fired at the prime minister and he must answer them

So only eloquent speakers and knowledgeable people can't participate in parliamentary system... That's the advantage

We already tried parliamentary system and it wasn't a bed of roses.

Presidential system has worked for over 20 years, might have worked poorly but it worked.

Mind you Britain is experiencing inflation as well and they have a parliamentary system.

You never say anything sensible
Never
So Moses came down with Tablets of stone with the ten commandments and it was written that retirement age is 60.
Where did you get that nonsense from?
Only eloquent speakers? Again where did you get that nonsense from
All system are made by the countries that operate them
In other words they are man made
There is no template of parliamentary system in the Qur'an bible or any where else.
People design government system that work for them . There is no requirement to talk AT ALL as a legislator ,never mind being eloquent. An MP.can sit and not open his mouth for 4 years only voting when there is a vote and not uttering a single word.
Retirement age is not mandatory.
Currently the oldest MP in the UK is 80 years old

I have always told you . You are not an intellectual
You are very dull and yet you think you must always talk. Most of what you say is wrong and stupid

Let's compare age of prime ministers to age of presidents

You can be President in your 80s 70s

Being a prime minister after 60 is very uncommon

Irrelevant
We are Talking about the rules of a system not your own unscientific. Beer parlour observations
If you want to do such a comparison you need over a hundred years of data from dozens of countries
So such a comparison is not practicable here
The last two presidents of the US have been over 70 that is no basis to make any sweeping generalisation about what is common or not common

It depends on the culture of the country and the Mood at any particular moment .

There is no evidence that Ages of Prime Ministers is different from that of executive Presidents or that changing to that system. Will change age of leader.
Your statement was incorrect. Admit you were wrong
What you implied www there was an inherent rule in the parliamentary system. Not what is "common" why are you so dishonest

Just stop talking
Your ignorance is irritating

Vote of no confidence in parliamentary system is pathway to instability....in a corrupt ridden country like Nigeria, MP's can be bribed and gang up against the PM ... a prime Minister should only be removed by a constitutional court, vote of no confidence should be an indictment, while the constitutional court will have the final say

Changing from Presidential to Parliamentary system is not the priority for Nigeria at the moment and it is unsafe given the level of demonic corruption in the hearts of our politicians and supreme court judges.

We are battling monumental corruption of our polithiefians and judges and changing the system of election will only give these criminals more leeway to hide under the confusion all changes brings to perpetuate themselves in power.

Although this bill is sponsored by a PDP Senator (Ned Nwoko) who practiced law in the UK, I hope it is not hijacked by MC Oluomo's boss to give himself tenure elongation.

For starters, the Parliamentary system in the UK does NOT have term limits and a British Prime Minister once served more than 20 years and a few others served 3 terms and even 4 terms.

We have to be careful what we wish for before MC Oluomo's boss in connivance with the corrupt Supreme court cash and carry judges gift the greedy drug baron a tenure into perpetuity for himself and his cronies.
