On Saturday, February 17, 2024, Punch News reported that the Concerned Nigerians For Better Nigeria (CNBN) group, an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting democratic principles and good governance, is rallying support for Senator Prince Ned Nwoko's proposal to amend the 1999 constitution in order to transition to a parliamentary system of government in Nigeria. This call to action follows the introduction of bills by Senator Prince Ned Munir Nwoko, which were supported by over 60 members of the National Assembly, seeking the alteration of the Constitution for a transition to a Parliamentary System. The group emphasized that their call aims to enhance accountability, inclusivity, and stability in the country’s governance structure.

The CNBN group highlighted the success of the parliamentary system of government, which was previously practiced in Nigeria before the military intervention in 1966, and has proven successful in various nations around the world, offering several advantages over the current presidential system. They expressed that by aligning with Senator Prince Ned Munir Nwoko and adopting a parliamentary system, Nigeria could achieve several benefits, including enhanced accountability, efficient oversight, reduced risk of corruption and unchecked power, inclusivity and representation, flexibility and responsiveness, and stable governance.

The group emphasized that the parliamentary system encourages the formation of coalition governments, ensuring that a broader range of voices and perspectives are represented in decision-making, thereby strengthening the democratic process and promoting more balanced governance. Additionally, they explained that the parliamentary system allows for swift decision-making and policy implementation, and the executive could be held accountable through votes of no confidence, ensuring responsiveness to the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.

Furthermore, the group stressed that the parliamentary system provides stability, minimizing political gridlock and frequent changes in leadership, which creates an environment conducive to long-term planning and sustainable development. They urged elected lawmakers, civil society organizations, and the Nigerian public to join forces with Senator Ned Nwoko and other National Assembly members in advocating for the transition to a parliamentary system, emphasizing the importance of engaging in open dialogue, raising awareness, and collaborating to drive the necessary reforms.

The group concluded by expressing their belief that a parliamentary system of government will promote better governance, accountability, and representation in Nigeria. They also outlined their commitment to engaging the masses and critical stakeholders across the country to encourage active participation in the public discourse surrounding this issue and the involvement of elected representatives. The statement was jointly signed by Convener, Olorogun Godwin Obire; Co-convener, Dr. Ibrahim Ali; Diaspora Director, Engr. Emeka Uche; Policy Director, Osssai Nicolas; and National Secretary, Olufemi Adebayo.

I totally support this idea. Imagine the amount that will be saved because the cost of governance will reduce.

This is going to be a difficult one to achieve...
(don't want to say impossible)

Because those guys up in the central government have tasted honey and switching over to a parliamentary system will amount to taking away honey from their mouth.

Nigerian politicians aren't known to make personal sacrifices. Besides they have enjoyed and taken advantage of the system for so long.

But It's a good idea if doable... For anything at all it's cheaper to operate.

These are the kind of bills and eventually laws we need to see more of debated on and passed in the national assembly that can promote growth, unify, reform and cause a positive change and development.

Not those mediocre bills and laws to ban sports bets or sachet drinks.

Our law makers need to put on their thinking caps more often and be less selfish to their personal gains.

Nice one Ned!
