A lawmaker in the 7th National Assembly, Senator Ita Enang, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to abolish the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Enang, a former presidential aide, said this on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme. The former lawmaker who is rooting for the establishment of state police, said the two organisations were unnecessary addition to the number of security agencies in the country. He advised that personnel of the two organisations should be sent to their respective states to serve in the state police. Governor Sani appeals for continuous aggressive military operations against bandits Bandits burn 12 villagers, 17 houses in Kaduna community He also advised that state police should incorporate state-owned security outfits such as Amotekun and Ebube-Agu. While noting that the need for state police was urgent, he urged President Tinubu to give it the urgency it deserves by directing the Attorney General of the Federation to prepare an executive bill and forward it to the National Assembly for prompt treatment. “We should not wait for the National Assembly to finish the constitutional amendment process; we should not allow it to be part of those matters that will be considered by the Senate or the joint session of the National Assembly. “Mr President should direct the Attorney General of the Federation to prepare an executive bill and forward it to the National Assembly so that it will be treated as a stand-alone executive bill on state police,” he said. He said the executive bill should spell out the limitations of the functions of state police to federal police. Enang said though he opposed the creation of state police years back because he feared that state governors would abuse it, the outfit is the solution to security challenges like banditry and kidnapping in Nigeria. “The time is now for us to voluntarily have state police. The food crisis we have is an insecurity problem,” he stated. https://dailytrust.com/insecurity-fg-should-abolish-civil-defence-road-safety-buharis-ex-aide/ |

That's bad. Collapsing FRSC into NPF will now give unreformed NPF the power to accost vehicles for reasons on FRSC could only do before now. That means a broader range of illegal detentions and extortions. The NPF needs reformation and reorientation above anything else. No proper crime reporting mechanism. No good pay. No good equipments. No record of arrested personels. No centralized system go track those in police custody. These are some of the reasons endsars happened. |

RepoMan007: The police has already been doing FRSC's work on Nigerian roads, and abolishing the later won't change anything. As a matter of fact, many Nigerian drivers prefer meeting the police to those FRSC officials, who they believe are more wicked and insist on bigger bribes than the police does. Meanwhile, he wasn't talking about collapsing the FRSC into the police; his recommendation was to convert they and the civil defence guys into their various states' police. That'll make sense as it won't require much training to get them ready for the new job. 1 Like |
