Ooni Of Ife, South-West Traditional Rulers Back Creation Of State Police by lexylaw09: 11:33am On Mar 01

Traditional rulers from the South-West gathered in Ile-Ife, Osun State, to discuss the escalating insecurity issues affecting the region. They highlighted the organized nature of attacks on Yoruba traditional rulers and prominent individuals, expressing concerns about herdsmen’s expansionist tendencies in Yorubaland.

Representatives from Osun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, and Ogun states, including prominent leaders such as the Ooni of Ife and the Olowo of Owo, emphasized the urgency of finalizing plans for the creation of State Police to enhance regional security. They urged the Federal Government to uphold its commitment to operationalize state police, underscoring the paramount importance of securing their subjects.

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, called for collaborative efforts among South-West monarchs to combat insecurity effectively. He stressed the necessity of engaging local security groups and advocating for true federalism to establish a robust federal structure for efficient policing.

In a joint communique, the traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife and Akarigbo of Remo, attributed the attacks by herdsmen to food insecurity and scarcity in the region.

They urged Yoruba Obas to leverage natural resources and traditional powers to counter banditry and kidnapping while maintaining and upholding traditional values. Additionally, the communique called for the recognition of the roles of traditional rulers in the national security architecture and emphasized the need for a strengthened judicial process to ensure justice for offenders.

It's not about supporting state police; the problem now is financing state police. Will they finance it?

Having a state police without resources for financing it is like tripling police's bribery and corruption.

Amotekun is already existing as a regional security outfit, the states should fund them and equip them more and they're to work with the police.

As for 100% state policing, states governors will turn them to errand dogs and use them to go after their opponents... Politicians at the state level would be too powerful.

Nigerian states aren't mature yet for that. Police, Army, Navy, Air Force should all be kept at the center for now, with each state coming up with their paramilitary security outfit to work in collaboration with the police...

Southwest have been financing amotekun successfully, that's a good case study to evaluate their financial commitment to state police.

SoNature:

Amotekun is too small to compare with the police. Police stations are scattered in almost every ward in states. I don't think that's the case of Amotekun.

Besides, the police we have today is terribly funded and equipped. If there's no means of financing the police to be better than it is today, it should remain a federal force. I tell you what: arming a man and keeping him hungry are a recipe for a disaster.

The best bet is to allow all states control their resources and pay taxes to the centre, but the FG is worried that some states will be richer than the FG if that happens and that they will want to break away from this pseudo-union.

It seems you do not understand the concept of state policing at all. Sorry you're 100% off point. To enlighten you a little, another name you can call state police is community police. A kind of police system that is deeply rooted in the grassroot. State police is not coming to take the place of NPF. The federal police shall continue to exist, but states will still have their own internal police system that works hand-in-hand with both federal police and other state police in the neighboring states. They do not necessarily have to set up stations in all wards, but their intelligent officers shall always be on ground and must be a local/indigenous person.

In the US, there are federal agencies like FBI and CIA. There are state agencies too like LAPD, NYPD etc

As much as I agree with you that state police will be used for personal gains, it is important to know that NPF is not effective, that is the truth.

Has FG not turned federal police to errand boys? Below is one of the several nonsenses that Goatluck Jonathan did wirh the federal police.

Olusegun Obasanjo did much more worse.

So you want a replication of that at the state level where there's very strong control? You just justified my sentiments...

We are talking of insecurity and you are talking of state police being used as errand dogs. Are the federal police not being used as errand dogs by the presidency?
State police is the way to go to forestall insecurity in our beloved country.
