Hello fellow japaist, I got a shocker of my life today when i decided to check the price for ielts exams. This exams that used to be 60-70k has now turned into a whooping 266k for just one exams. Note that the exams was increased from 80-107k last year, and this year alone, it was increased twice from 107-139k and now 266k. Where do we go from here and what exactly is this government doing about this astronomical rise in the price of things cry

What's the need for all this English test when we all are English-speaking country? UK schools do not need this to gain admission.

Time to check for alternative test like PTE or schools that do not require any of these, after all the aim is to japa.

You don't get it. Lol
Not all Nigerians can speak English properly, and even if they can, they may not be as good as native speakers. The IELTS exam is made to test your ability to use English in different situations and it's well-known all over the world.

It's not just about grammar and vocabulary, but also about communication skills, and so on.
And yes, the UK schools do want this to let you in, especially for international students.

The PTE Academic you're on about is just another English language test that some UK places take, but it's not as popular as the IELTS, and it may have different ways of doing things and scoring you. Other places that don't ask for any English test may be rubbish or dodgy, and they may not give you the same chances or perks as the ones that do.

The goal is not just to japa like you lot say, but to do it well. If you want to have a cracking and rewarding time abroad, you need to have a decent grasp of English. Lol.

No laff o! this will further drive prospective international students away from thwase exams, Schools in Eastern Europe and some Schengen Countries do not need these English Test Exams.

I have identified two Schools already in Norway and Romania and I'm okay.

Yeah, I understand your point, it's now left for those Nigerians that can't communicate well in English Language, it's not my fault, its not your fault either, I think there should be ways these international schools pick their prospective students in a cost-effective manner, paying over 200K for English language test is outrageous, Visa, Tuition fees, flight ticket, accommodation, upkeep, etc.

but you can't say for sure about other places may be rubbish cos they don't ask for English Test, they also offer too-notch, qualitative education better than Nigerian Universities, a good student can as well go there and make good grades for him or her self and still compete favourably with their UK, US, Canada or Australia counter-part.

Look, I get your point too. Lol. It's not just about those Nigerians who can't speak English well, it's about everyone who wants to study abroad. English is like the global language, and you need to prove that you can use it properly.

The international schools have their standards, and they won't lower them for anyone. Paying over 200K in Nigeria for an English test may seem steep. But there's a reason why Nigerians still go for it, correct?

And don't be fooled by those places that don't ask for an English test. They may not be rubbish, but they're not top-notch either. They may offer a decent education, but not the best. And a good student can't just go there and ace everything. But if you insist, fine. Each to their own!

I think all this exams are just money making machines. Some of the examiners can't even speak fluently like most Nigerians, but test takers skill fail the exams. Note that passing of failing the exams doesn't mean you know how to speak or don't speak English very well.

Are you calling the invigliators examiners? Because it's only the speaking test that you will meet the assessor directly and hear them.

I could say that this exam is money grabbing but there are 2 things to escape it. Let your country do well that no one cares about English language. That is what Chinese did that everyone now wants to study their language. They also have things to offer the world that no one cares what they speak.

IELTS is not only for Nigerians. A U.S. Citizen that wants to move to Canada will also write it. There aren't exemptions. This is where we can diffetentiate between academic IELTS and general IELTS. Have you asked yourself how a Chinese who cannot commumicate properly comes here and learns our languages

The second option, which is for academic alone is to go to a very good school or proper federal school that its standard can be easily compared with any good school abroad. Once they are able to transcribe your result to a standard that meets theirs, you should be fine. This is where WAEC is useful because it is a standard body. People make the mistake that it must be one porsche school but they don't understand what a country abroad has set as its standard for education. When they tell people to take their studies seriously, they say school is scam and start engaging in malpractice. They hire people to write exams for them but you have forgotten that you are shortchanging yourself There will come a day where you either embarrass yourself becuse you did not put time to learn the thing yourself or there will be a day no one will be there to help you and you will never be trusted because you cannot defend what you claimed to have. You can run, you can't hide. If you really went to school and did what WAEC asked of you, IELTS is not a problem at all. Na high school exam.

The third option is, now that you know there are no exemptions for migration, what else can you do?Learn another language or move to another country that does not need IELTS. But you must remember that language is an essential tool for any country looking at migration. It costs a lot teaching people and you have to be so skilled in something that language is not a barrier.

At the end of the day, you see that there is no shortcut to success in life. You can choose the shortcut and you will see the result. Everything in life requires effort. Some people in other countries pay to learn English and take this test but it is still for your own good. How do you migrate to a country and want to do well without speaking the language well? You will run into trouble one day when your sarcasm is taken as threat when you misused language because the test na racket in your opinion.

Yeah, PTE is recognized in mostly Australian schools, etc but never knew it's that expensive. Well, E concern pipple wey won go schools wey need am, as for me I'm OK with affordable schools in Eastern Europe and they do not require those Tests.

nice points you have here but I will tell you this, ielts exams is not about how well you speak English by it how well you can pass the exams. This is same with PTE exams. Indians you converse with and barely hear what they're saying are the once that pass PTE with high grades.

I think Soo. You want to test someone if that person speaks good English, you hardly hear what the individual said your interaction, yet that individual still scored high points. How?
