Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday, advised that Nigeria should approach the government of Zimbabwe for a solution to the current all-time high inflation in the country.

He noted that since Zimbabwe was recently confronted with the same problem and came out of it, the southern African country would have useful advice for Nigeria.

In its latest release, the National Bureau of Statistics put Nigeria’s inflation at 29.9 per-cent.

The country is currently grappling with high cost of living, with pockets of protests breaking out across the country as Nigerians contend with increasing prices of foodstuffs.

Obasanjo, speaking on Monday at a youth leadership symposium as part of activities lined up for his 87th birthday, said Nigeria had Zimbabwe to learn from.

The symposium with the theme “Opportunities for Peace: Roles of the Youths in Conflict Prevention in Africa” held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

It was put together by the Centre for Human Security and Dialogue in collaboration with the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.

The ex-President said the times of challenges were not to give up but to face the problem head-on and draw lessons from those who encountered similar problems in the past and overcame.

He said, “When the time is rough and tough, the tough must get going..no problem is new and no problem will be permanent. Committing suicide is not the end of any problem, confront it and take it to God because he could do anything. When you have a problem look at those who have had this problem before and how they overcame it

“We have this problem of galloping inflation in the country now but do we have a country with such problems recently? Yes we do, Zimbabwe had this problem recently. Shouldn’t we ask them how they did it even if our approach will be different? Even if whatever we shall be doing will be different but we can ask questions to navigate our way out.”

Obasanjo also posited that dialogue, not guns or any form of violence, would help resolve the various conflicts on the African continent.

He said that like never before, conscious efforts to build and inculcate a culture of peace and security in the youth must be intensified to spur them to be at the vanguard of promoting peace rather than being used to perpetrate violence on the continent.

He said, “We must begin to bring up our youths in the culture of peace and security. The chances are where we have a culture of love, we will have peace. The first thing to do is to inculcate in the youths the ingredients of peace which is love and fellowship.

“Look at the attributes that God gave us to have a life of stability, life of peace, they are as I mentioned, kindness, mercy and forgiveness. All of these attributes are professed by God and He shared same with us to make life pleasant for us. But when we build negative attitudes, pull him down, then there will be a problem.”

He referenced biblical characters Esther, “who was able to secure her race from being exterminated,” and Joseph, “who helped to fight famine.”

“The youth must be at the vanguard of pursuing peace. They must be able to persuade those who believe that gun and violence is the way out of conflicts to have a rethink. The way out is conversation and dialogue.

“We have had our issues here during the civil war. We killed ourselves mercilessly and destroyed our best facilities but we still came back to the roundtable to get the challenge resolved.

“Youths must develop the culture of peace, the culture of humaneness, the culture of living the way God wants us to live,” Obasanjo added.

The coordinator of the programme and former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof Peter Okebukola, said the essence of the symposium was to further drive home Obasanjo’s commitment to the African youths.

Okebukola, who is the Director of the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, said, “This event is a testament to the belief that it is not enough to grant young people a seat at the table; their involvement must be vital and meaningful.

“Through targeted interventions, inclusive policies, and international collaboration, we aim to empower West African youths as catalysts for positive change, paving the way for a more peaceful and harmonious society.”

And the assumptions that it was APC/Buhari/BAT who created discord, enmity or division in this country is another lies created by them, they've been bitter people, humans who are hateful by default, it's mind-blowing.

We must begin to bring up our youths in the culture of peace and security.

The way OBJ keeps parroting “The Youths This, The Youths That” is beyond annoying.

How many youths did Obasanjo EMPOWER or give APPOINTMENTS to during his own administration?

He has suddenly remembered “The Youths” now that he is no longer in Aso Rock; commenting on, and addressing National Issues that he failed woefully to address during his own administration.

A veritable example of: Experts at removing the speck from other people eyes, while leaving the log in their own eyes intact.

That was how he lied that he never pursued “Third Term Ambition”.

That was also how he lied that Olu Agunloye (his former Power & Steel Minister) awarded a contract of US6 Billion Dollars without his consent & approval.

The US16 Billion Dollars Power Project he wasted & siphoned during his administration is the reason Nigeria is still in darkness.

If anybody is keen on knowing how useless & despicable Obasanjo truly is, read Iyabo Obasanjo’s Open Letter To Him in 2013 - and you will never respect this agbaya again.

Nigerians are suffering in the midst of plenty !!!

The rich also cry for the rich. But no one is crying for the poor who are dying of hunger all over the country. No one will name roads after them.

A minister said the poor cannot steal doors from a food warehouse because they're too weak to remove them in the first place.

Politics of starvation, let the hunger games begin.

APC has destroyed Nigeria in just few years..

Buhali and now Tîlubú.....(They both achieved nothing)

The Nepotism APC government won't even consider this advice...Rather, their problems is the IGBôS...

To them Zimbabwe is an IGBô nation so they won't take any advice from them..

Smh. Zimbabwe should rather come and learn from Nigeria. Imagine a former Nigerian President recommending Zimbabwe to Nigeria, same Zimbabwe that almost ran out of forex until Afrexim helped them at the dying minute in exchange for control of their platinum mines.

Nigeria is not having any unusual problems outside the removal of subsidy and floating of the naira. It will eventually ease out. This decision should have been taken by the predecessors of the current President, including Pa Obj himself, but they were wasting our hard earned forex to defend the naira against the USD and looting locations meant to revamp our public electricity supply system.

May God bless Nigeria for ever! Check my signature for free stuffs!

Is Zimbabwe free from inflation?
Is Simbabubuwe now better than Nigeria?
Here, we created avoidable problems. Self inflicted injuries. In Zimbabwe, it was Mugabe that milked them unlike Nigeria that was milked by many people.

Our solution is to open border cos without opening the borders, them still dey smuggle foods, amunitions etc. Let's kuku open so that people won't be hungry. Second is to compulsory manufacturing plants. Govs should be ashamed of commissioning bridges, roads or transformers.

Few weeks ago, a politician commissioned generator in Warri! 😂

The only reason Naira is depreciating is due to those hoarding the dollar... what those that have excess naira are doing now is to buy up as much dollar as they can to make profit... dollars should be for only those that need I for traveling or to pay for goods and services in USA alone ...

Outrightly ban the dollar, make it illegal, anyone caught with dollars should be arrested... give all those that are holding onto it one month to submit it to the nearest bank at 1k per dollar or have the risk of loosing it entirely once the deadline is crossed ...

All domiciliary accounts should be shut down , and all foreign currency should be converted to naira ... all BDC should be shut down ... if u need dollars , go to the banks ...

Again, FG should arrrest 5 bank MDs along with the execs to use them to set example for those bankers that round-trip ....

For those saying it's because we don't produce, know that Nigeria has always been an importing nation... let's also know that usa import their oil, USA also import some of their goods due to cheat labour in China and Indonesia .... we should ask ourselves why Benin Republic currency is doing better.. they don't need the dollars to hoard... they also import massively and they don't even have any tangible export to earn dollars , but their currency is doing way better than ours ...

I'm not saying that local production would not have an effect, it will , but not as much ... Nigerians are the reason why the naira keeps on depreciating... cos we wanna use it to make money... we are the only ones that do this nonsense in this whole world ... u can't go to Spain or Portugal or Kenya or malaysia or Bolivia or Lebanon and u will see their citizens buying up dollars to hoard so that it creates scarcity to make gain thereby destroying the country... our president is also guilty of this cos he shared dollars to delegates tk get elected ... why wudnt the naira keep on crashing

MAKE THE DOLLAR ILLEGAL AND WATCH HOW NAIRA WILL APPRECIATE

Only those that genuinely need it should get it thru the banks and u will not even get it in cash ... it will be wired electronically to the company or person that needs it only in the United States... if u wanna buy good from China, u don't need dollars , u need yuan , if u wanna import from Europe, u don't need dollars, u need euros or pounds... and only the banks will run that for u... when coming into the country, u must declare and submit ur foreign currency to the cbn stand in the international airport and then u will get the equivalent in naira, and when travelling, ur bank will give u a special card that can act as PTA or BTA with limited amount to spend ..

Do this and watch the dollar to naira crash to 150- 200 naira in a couple of months

Pride wouldn't let them. To think we have technocrats and renowned economists whose expertise aren't utilized in this country is pathetic.
We are too rich both in human and natural resources for this mess we're plunged into by the ineptness of our leaders.

I expected to see someone who would analyse the the Zimbabwean currency performance or economic policy and why Obj's advice is a good or bad idea!
