*Kwara Must Change caution igbo traders about weaponizing ethnicity in business* _Says group solidarity can't erase individual tax liability_ A leading Pro-Democracy group, Kwara Must Change has cautioned igbo traders in ilorin, against weaponizing ethnicity in their dispute with state authorities over enforcement of tax laws in the state. The group said that, turning dispute over tax liability into ethnic protest is the height of insensitivity by the igbo traders association and an attempt to blackmail the Kwara State government. In a statement by the Convener of Kwara Must Change, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, the group said that tax laws in Kwara State are enforced on all businesses in the state, not on the basis of tribe, sex or religion, but on the basis of business and volume of transactions and turning tax related dispute into ethnic protest is the height of insensitivity. According to Hamzat, businesses making money in the state should pay their fair share of taxes, so that they can hold the government accountable to its responsibilities. "All businesses in the state are benefiting from infrastructure and enabling environment provided by the state and it is improper to attempt to scandalize the state government through malacious ethnic protest, in an attempt to evade tax or shortchange government". Hamzat explained that, tax underpayment amounts to shortchanging the government and by extension, the people of Kwara State and this will affect the pace of development in the state. He admonished the traders to operate within the ambit of the state law to seek redress over any tax related dispute, rather than resort to unnecessary ethnic blackmail, saying group solidarity will not erase individual tax liabilities. "Traders associations don't owe taxes, neither can they dictate tax liabilities of their members, individual businesses are taxed based on law and if the state authorities says certain businesses are owing taxes, those businesses should engage the authority inline with laid down rules and regulations, not create their own rule and attempt to coerce the authority into succumbing to their dictate through ethnic blackmail". He concluded. End 2 Likes 1 Share |

That's Igbo for you. They don't understand simple English. The government of kwara state tax every body living in the state, irrespective of where you are coming from. Hausa, Yoruba, Edo, igala and so on begging to pay their tax to further enjoy more infrastructure in the state. E reach Igbo side, Dem start gathering themselves claiming that govt tax them because they are Igbo. Is that not madness? Abeg, make Igbo leave Ilorin before hand touch them.... Let them go back to their village and never come back to the west or north. Make them dey enjoy the good governance that they have created in their land.... If they cannot do that then they should be ready to do anything our authority told them to do. They are using this protest to blackmail the governor of kwara that he is taxing them because they are Igbo I'm tired of this people aswear..... Make we break Nigeria make every park and go. 33 Likes 8 Shares |

My advice to Igbos is that if they tax you pay, add the amount you pay as tax to the cost of the goods and sell to them. You are not losing anything. 7 Likes 3 Shares |

Why are you implementing Progressive Tax only in Kwara state. Is that legal in Nigeria? Or can every state decide their own state tax laws notwithstanding the standing Federal tax policy. If you have a transparent policy, they are all bound to pay the tax. The hotels and petrol stations earn as much or more than traders. Are traders truly doing more volumes? There are Yoruba and Hausa importers and traders too...why are they not complaining...or are they complaining? Or only Igbo traders are complaining among the traders? Are all businesses- doing the same capped volume of transaction, paying a relatively higher tax...or it's been enforced on (Igbo) traders, while being passive on other businesses not dominated by Igbos? Widening the tax bracket isn't the only way to grow the economy. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Everyone should try to live peaceably with their host. If you don't have this taught as a value right from home, you will not realise until it's too late that the land of your host will never bless you if you hate or resent your host. How this degenerated to this level itself is bad and may have a negative consequence on their relationship. May God bless Nigeria for ever! Check my signature for free stuffs! 18 Likes |

Slytiger: They are not used to paying taxes in their parasitic states since they have the understanding that their respective state governments must be financed solely on handouts from the federal purse which they hardly contribute anything into it. This is one reason their governors run their states with impunity . Solodu tried taxing them and now they declared him as the new Herod sent to enslave them. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Againstallodds:You see, they don't want to pay taxes. That is the issue. They are not the only traders in the markets. How come other traders of different ethnicity are not protesting against paying taxes? It's absurd that they try to make it a tribal issue..... Thr way Ilorin is mocked by SE on Nairaland, one would even think ibos do not live in the city. 5 Likes 1 Share
