A scholar at the department of adult education, faculty of education, University of Ibadan, Dr.Abiola Adiat Omokhabi,has called for the enactment of laws that would criminalize paternity fraud and revisiting of the prescribed punishment for rape offenders in Nigeria.
Dr.Omokhabi made the call while delivering a lecture at the faculty with the theme:-Navigatiing beyond the present in a familiar terrain:Emergent phenomenon in social welfare discourse, which was held at the faculty lecture theatre.
She submitted the need to enact the anti paternity fraud law which became imperative because "there is no single Nigerian law that makes paternity fraud illegal despite the evidence that the reports of its existence are available"
The don further added "there ought to be a law making it illegal to misidentified a non biological father on a birth certificate or other relevant public record.
Women who participated in paternity fraud should face criminal misrepresentation or perjury changes during the paternity fraud proceedings, if such a law is enacted. In addition to lowering prevalence of sexual immortality. Such law would encourage married women in Nigeria to take responsibility for their sexual behavior" she concluded.
