Only God knows what truly transpired

If the lawyer was shot by police then it is reasonable to imagine that the police mistook him and cousin for the kidnappers. Further that there may have been a prior plan or strategy in place to deal with the kidnap situation involving police and layer that tragically unraveled at the crucial moment (heat of the moment).

These sorts of things happen - ironically termed "Friendly Fire" Incident. Nigeria did not invent the term.
