Senators from the southern part of the country have revived their forum.

They met for the first time on the platform of the Southern Senators Forum to inaugurate the forum nine months after the inauguration of the 10th Assembly.

The 51 senators from the 17 southern states, met and elected six executives under the Chairmanship of Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC Lagos East).

Other members of the executives are: Vice Chairman, Senator Victor Umeh (Labour Party, Anambra Central), Secretary, Senator Mpigi Barinada ( PDP, Rivers South East), Publicity Secretary, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong ( APC, Cross River North ) and Treasurer, Senator Kenneth Eze ( APC Ebonyi Central).

Addressing the forum at the inaugural meeting, the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, said the forum has been in existence since the 9th Senate and not a newly formed forum.

He said his current position as Leader of the 10th Senate prevented him from providing the required leadership, which has necessitated the change of leadership which took place at the meeting .

The Senate leader said, “What is happening here today is not new as both the Southern and Northern Senators’ fora existed even before this 10th Senate.

“At this meeting of the Southern senators, new executive members will be announced to steer the affairs of the forum.

“The new chairman as unanimously agreed by Southern Senators is Senator Adetokunbo Abiru ( APC Lagos East) , Vice Chairman, Senator Victor Umeh (Labour Party , Anambra Central) , Secretary , Senator Mpigi Barinada ( PDP Rivers South East) , Publicity Secretary, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (APC Cross River North ) and Treasurer , Senator Kenneth Eze ( APC Ebonyi Central).”

Accepting his appointment as the new leader of the forum, Abiru said the forum would serve as a veritable platform for discussing, analysing and dissecting national issues by Southern senators for the purpose of moving Nigeria forward.

He added that they would partner with the Northern Senators Forum to move the country forward.

Abiru said, “This forum, the Southern Senators Forum is to champion the course of Nigeria and Nigerians. We have our Northern brothers with the Northern Senators Forum. We will work together with the Northern Senators Forum to move the country forward.

“We will swing into action and roll out our plans for the betterment of the region and Nigeria. We will map out our plans and work on them for the betterment of Nigeria and Nigerians generally.”

When asked by our correspondent why it took the forum nine months before its inauguration and if it had anything to do with what transpired in the plenary on Tuesday, Abiru said it had nothing to do with it.

He said, “No, it doesn’t have anything to do with what happened at the plenary yesterday. The last leadership headed by the leader of the Senate is just transferring their powers and responsibilities to us.

“We have been running, it’s not like we haven’t existed, what we just have now is a change of leadership because our former leader is now the leader of the Senate.

“So, what we had today is a change of leadership and we will follow in line with the direction they have given us. It’s continuity and we will all work together.”

After the silly stunt pulled by Senator Ningi and some divisive element in the north, it is good to see southern senators come together to counter the unnecessary and divisive move by some of these disgruntled elements to impeach Senator Akpabio.

This is a bipartisan forum of all senators from the south. APC, PDP and LP. Every politics is local so everyone from the same locality must always come together irrespective of party differences when their collective interest is attacked. Kudos to them all.

Yeah that's so cool.

By their next meeting they should come together and deliberate on how to tighten their belts and free up funds for palliatives for the betterment of "their southern region"

You of all people should know that the revival of this forum is for political reasons to grab more power and money and not for any betterment of any southern region.

When these old cargos want to share money you will never hear North or South.

But when they are struggling for that power, position and personal interests you will be hearing North and South.

They begin to play the usual North and South card, And some fools amongst us are still falling for it,,

Imagine celebrating formation of Southern Senators' forum.

Good move.

Nigeria was not created for the core north to manipulate and monopolize.

Thank God the ethnic card played by Ningi didn’t fly.

South East should not join such devilish forum.. anything done with tribalists is of no use or interest.

Buhari was king of the North.. we agree,
but dude carried the whole north along in terms of appointments and capital projects..
be it NE, NW, NC .

If the dunce in Aso Rock today wants to be remembered as a bloody South Western tribalist .. so be it..

whenever shit hits the fan
they remember and scream southern unity..
This were the same sellouts that voted Buhari (twice) against Jonathan..
I guess southern unity was dead in 2015

Today none of them have a good word for Buhari, meaning they support and vote out of stupidity and bigotry..

Deep down we know Budget padding didn't start with Tinubu... But it must stop with him
God has given us a Hero in senator Nengi..
We sane Nigerians must rally with him,

I see they even made one of their own chairman of the southern forum, where the president comes from..
Rubbish. undecided

Ningi pulled a silly stunt? Senators allocating billions to what they call projects that adds zero value to the society and that is not even included in the budget . ..and you think he is bluffing?

This forum of southern senators will never allow the northern senators to impeach the Senate president. Senator Ningi wanted to establish a very solid impeachment evidence against SP but was sabotaged by some of his fellow northern senators. B4 now, there was strong rumor of impeachment in the Senate leadership but...

I left..!

Which yeye interest?

Do you know how many northern senators have disowned Ningi?

Fact is that most Nigerians are still more interested in the politics, The North versus South measuring of d11cks, than the actual governance and democratic dividends.

You called Senator Ningi's patriotism silly.

Because he exposed the corruption inherent in Tinubu's government, you now describe him as a divisive element.

If you think what Ningi did was to better your lot then you don't know anything. Ningi's move is a political move against the entire south and the current president primarily because this Senate President initiated a probe against Buhari's "ways and means loan".
