In January of 1967, the then President of Ghana, General Joe Ankrah, hosted the Military leaders of Nigeria at his hill top mansion in Aburi, Ghana. The objective of this meeting was to avert civil war, and put Nigeria on the part of long term peace on prosperity. The previous year has seen coups and counter- coups, massacres, pogroms, riots, ethnic and sectarian violence.

The main antagonists, Lt Col Ojukwu, Military Governor of the Eastern Region, and Lt Col Gowon, presumtive Military head of State. Both men sat down with General Ankrah for two days and reached a 12 point agreement now known as the Aburi agreement, or the Aburi Accord.

The agreement basically restructured the 4 Regions of Nigeria into a confederation of 4 Regions. Not only would each Region control its resources, each would have its own Army, Police, and control its internal security, making the central government weak. The agreement also recognised Gowon as head of state, but in item 8, fobade Gowon from changing the 4 Regional structure of Nigeria unless all 4 Military Governors of the time agreed he should do so. All parties signed the agreement.

However, within weeks of returning to Nigeria, Gowon broke the agreement by announcing that he will be abolishing all 4 Region's, creating 12 new states to replace them, and ending resource control(Decree 14 and 15 of 1967)

Ojukwu responded by declaring Biafra, and civil war followed.

But had Aburi been implemented, had the 4 Region's been allowed to exploit their talents and resources, had the 4 Region's not had an all powerful federal government, had the Region's controlled their internal security, we would not be where we are today. It would have been a better country

Instead, what happened? Gowon took resource control and Regionalism away, created unitary states, the federal government became excessively powerful, everyone abandoned their talents and resources and depended on oil. Poverty and nsecurity steadily got worse

Today Nigeria is world poverty capital, 8th most insecure country on earth, and one of the most corrupt
u igbos n always trying to rewrite history

It doesn’t make sense

It wasn't an Igbo coup. It was a southern Nigeria coup. Those guys were pure revolutionary's who really wanted to change the course of Nigeria due to the Northern Hegemony done by the British who practically handed over Nigeria to the North

I just finished reading "Why we struck" written by Major Adewale Ademoyaga, One of the three leaders of the coup

1. Kaduna Nzegwuo is Delta not even Igbo
2. Major Ademola Ademoyaga.Yoruba from Ogun state
3. Major Ifeajuna was Ibo

Those were the 3 guys that planned the revolution. It was at the time the Nation was at crisis with rioting everywhere and the federal government was about repressing opposition completely.

They wanted a total and complete turnaround of the country and not one region particularly the North ruling over the rest of us
u igbos keep lieing to yourselves everyday

So y was it that no igbo leader was killed?
Y was it that the coupist were still pampered in prison?
U igbos think u are wise n others are stupid

Up to the youths to decide what country they want? If thst were possible, they would have decided long ago. We are all prisoner of a long failed unworkable British colonial contraption called Nigeria

Those who want Biafra, Oduduwa Republic and Arewa Republic are those who want try something else. The rest are just slaves of an unworkable contraption, that might have worked had the restructuring agreed at Aburi been implemented

It is never too late to start restructuring even the oldest Nations are still restructuring their Nations to meet their political and economic goals. In Nigeria a Bill passed First reading recently in senate for rotation of office of the president among the 6 geopolical zones. That is part of restructuring. You cry and weep for the past instead of finding solution for today's problems.

Nigeria could not have been restructured at Aburi
Was Aburi a constitutional conference
It was just a conversation full stop
What Mandate or authority did Ojukwu. or Gowon have to change the constitution?
Did any Ijaws,Efiks or Ogoni vote and send Ojukwu to Aburi
Did Yoruba send Gowon to Aburi
None of them had such powers. They simply had a chat and Gowon came back to discuss with the Supreme Military Council

Can Tinubu just wake up, go and discuss with Nnamdi Kanu and come and tell Nigerians that he has agreed to Fendi Accord and Biafra can go?

Really? But less than three months after Aburi, the same Gowon abolished all 4 Region's, created 12 new states to replace them, with Decree 14. He the removed resource control with decree 15. Nobody bothered to ask Gowon why he changed the constitution and structure of Nigeria with no mandate or authority. Nobody bothered to ask how the 36 states in Nigeria were created.

When you're a Northerner, you can get away with anything

Not Gowon
The Government
Gowon was not the government
He was not a king
Gowon did not remove resource control
Ironsi's government did
