Re: Skill Sets For The Future- Nigeria In Focus by AjanleKoko: 6:10pm On Nov 14, 2011
I'd say Energy, ICT, and healthcare as well.

Energy because one way or the other, the power issue is now on the front burner, and we should begin to see some sort of shift in the next decade.

ICT is rather obvious. With Sanusi's cashless move, as well as the advent of mobile money, we should begin to see another wave of ICT transformations. It has always been the financial sector that has driven the industry anyways.

Healthcare . . . well, the framework is there. Health insurance has now taken off, and in a few years, we should be able to see some serious investments in healthcare infrastructure by private investors. Maybe even government.

What about Manufacturing? And Real Estate too.
Re: Skill Sets For The Future- Nigeria In Focus by Nobody: 10:58pm On Nov 14, 2011
Manufacturing is not good in Nigeria,I have tried it before and it was hell, electricity, exchange rate ,double taxation ,state government, local government, theieves in the factory stealing what is produced. It will lead to short life span.

Real estate is the bomb,The population of Nigeria is excepted to double o 300million,so the the humans will need a place and schools etc.

Op said next 10years

Manufacturing would be massive! With electricity improving and Medium income earners following, more companies will expand
FMGC especially- Logistics and Supply Chain Management skills will be very useful

Healthcare Management will also be good, the health insurance blah blah is still good on paper but I think it need a massive injection into national discourse, there are a lot of discussions in the papers but people on the ground are very ignorant of what the heck it is all about

ICT especially Security ,Database and Networks

Housing/Real Estate? What skill set? or you are talking about investment opportunities?

In the next 10 years Nigeria will still not produced the type of electricity needed to industralize,The city of tokyo ,a city in japan generates 70,000 mega watts,Cairo 25,000.It will be the same story in 10 years.Unless you have dip pocket

Owing to the dearth of skilled Automobile technicians in Nigeria and the influx of Hi-tech Vehicles in our polity.Skilled auto technicians will really be in business in 10 years time, visit www.yourcarlab.com today for training details or call Emeka on 08068371473 .

I answered a question like this on the property section days ago but the mod keeps deleting it, seems like his job is deleting intelligent post.
I will edit it a bit since its investment and not skill related.

With nigeria currently at 150,000,000, its been estimated that we will hit 200,000,000 in the next 9 years and about 15% of those people will be in Lagos. but hey, Lagos cant contain all that numbers. i expertly predict that Ogun state is going to benefit from Lagos Mega-City status not Lagos itself. People are already entering Ogun State in trickles, and the mass migration of Lagosians to Mowe-Ibafo, Owode, Ofada, Ikorodu, Ifo, Otta, Ilaro, Wasimi, Iro, and other parts of Ogun State is a clear testimony of more to Happen.
@OP: Real Estate like building apartments wont give you fast returns as this is even more expensive. i am a professional builder, and building ties up so much funds and returns comes in extremely slow and take a very long time. But mass purchase of dry and smartly located lands will suprise you in years to come. I am stressing YEARS to come. If you dont have the patience, and cant endure and go for a long term ROI, then real estate is the wrong area to look.
in 2020, when we hit 200,000,000, we will have a fresh set of Nigerians from age: 1-10 years. This require the following which are the best businesses and skills any Nigerian can go within the next 10 years.

1. properties (developed or undeveloped)  / engineering, arch, artisans, construction related skills
2. education (schools, university or educational materials) / printing, motivation speaking, teaching, educational skills
3. agriculture (animals, staples or processed) / farm, poultry, engineering, skill; agriculture related
4. baby products (childrens foods, etc) / nutritionist skills, engineering, health, etc.
5. energy / elect, engineering, etc.
6. health (hospitals, gyms, pharma, etc)

My company is helping Nigerians abroad and within invest smartly in ONLY real estate.

@Poster,

Nigeria will need both professional and vocational skills in 10 years:

1. ICT skills (ICT skills will be required everywhere - private and public sector, including schools)

2. Healthcare skills (e.g. Medical Doctor, Nurse, Midwife and Specialists like Dentist, Pharmacist, Surgeon, etc)

3. Teaching skills (e.g. School teachers, lecturers, researchers, writers, etc)

4. Construction skills (e.g. Builders, Architects, Foreman, Electricians, Painters, Plumbers, Carpenters, etc)

5. Agriculture skills (e.g. Farmers, Industrialists, Milk Producers, Egg Producers, Bakers, etc)

6. Sustainable Energy skills (e.g. Solar Energy)

7. All Engineering skills because Nigeria is still developing (e.g. Aeronautics, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, etc)

8. Media skills (e.g. Film Producers and Directors, Actors, Actress and Musicians)

9. Fashion designers (e.g. Tailors and Interior designers)

10. Others (e.g. Drivers, House Helps, Cleaners, Gardeners, Child Carers and Elderly Carers)

Seems thats the current situation, so its safe to assume nothing new in the nearest future.

Just greater demand due to population explosion?

No one is talking about:

1. Security/Law Enforcement
2. Good Governance
3. Bio/Nano Tech

I think project mgt will be the in thing cos with the massive construction projects and infrastructure that need to be done to back up the increase in our population.

I also think agriculture is a place to look except Govt's inadequate attention in that section is making it more risky and capital intensive.

Healthcare will always remain relevant cos increase in population will mean more sick people, on the average i really think Nigeria is the place to be in the next 10 years, the market potential is awesome.

I agree. Besides, India, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil are better manufacturing bets.
Without a definite policy from the government on local manufacturing, we are merely speaking Turenchi. And do you see that happening any time soon?
Re: Skill Sets For The Future- Nigeria In Focus by DisGuy: 3:32pm On Nov 15, 2011
We will generate enough for some companies to expand and some to start up, doesnt necessarily have to be high tech, but more hands will be needed there

Cement will probably be used as the standard, by then companies in Nigeria would have met local demand, then the focus will be on something else
car parts? Dustbins, Textiles

The policy makers are not ready to industralize ,The local and state government are horrible when it comes to taxation,Electricty,Security etc and this are for the government. It is better  to buy landed properties than machineries.

The customs are also not helping the country, they discourage exports and sabotage the system,I dont know if some of them know the benefits of exports to a country,They want to collect all the profits on the spot without thinking about the country at large.

Nice views, but its like healthcare, IT and Real Estate are most viable,
though i'd place my bet on IT to produce d next generation of millionaires, if d BRICS economies is anyting to go by. Place ur bets, where will our multimillionaires cum from den?

India as specilalized in IT ,Medical tourism ,And now wine production as a result of agriculture. The chinese are doing just fine in manufacturing and space technology now,Nigeria could take examples of Its doctors by attracting them back  and build its medical sector and attract  customers and patients from all over Africa.
Re: Skill Sets For The Future- Nigeria In Focus by AjanleKoko: 12:11pm On Nov 16, 2011
I would still place my bets on IT, energy, and healthcare, if we are talking 10 years, four of which will have been wasted by GEJ.

IT and healthcare will be mainly private sector driven, while the government will be forced to carry out some measure of liberalization in the power sector, and that should spur growth.

Every other one is just a big dream.

Me thinks some industries have a chance of doing well independent of govt. input and that's why i agree with Ajanlekoko's submission.Healthcare and I.T have been growing pretty much without govt support hence people with skills in those areas will continue to soar and the oil majors will continue to sustain the growth in the oil industry so long as demand for Bonny sweet light is high.however with miraculous improvement in government policies the agriculture/food sector could enjoy a boost as well as construction, in summary now is the time to improve any skill(not certifications) that only 5% of the population can do.
