When an undersea internet cable is broken, the process of repairing it involves several steps. Let’s dive into the details:

1. Fault Detection:

The first step is to identify the location of the break. A pulse of light is sent from the island where the cable connects, and a machine measures how long it takes to travel. This establishes the precise location of the break.

2. Cable Repair Boat Deployment:
- Once the break location is known, a specialized cable repair boat is dispatched to that area. This boat is equipped with the necessary tools and expertise for undersea cable repairs.
- The boat may use either a remotely-operated underwater vehicle (ROV) or a tool called a grapnel (essentially a hook on a chain) to retrieve the broken end of the cable.

3. Splicing and Rejoining:
- The broken end of the cable is brought onboard the repair boat.
- The cable is carefully spliced, and the broken section is re-joined to fresh cable.
- The same process is repeated at the other end of the break.

4. Completion Time:
- If all goes well, the entire repair process typically takes between five and seven days.
- However, there are factors that can extend this timeframe:

Distance: The specialized repair boat may need time to reach the affected area. For instance, in the case of Tonga’s broken cable, the closest repair boat was stationed about 4,700 kilometers (2,900 miles) away in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
Safety Considerations: Experts must ensure that the area is safe for the boat and crew. They also assess the risk of further volcanic eruptions.
Natural Disasters: While natural disasters causing cable breaks are rare, they can impact repair timelines.

5. Global Cable Repairs:
Globally, there are approximately 200 cable repairs carried out each year, with most breakages caused by fishing boat nets or anchors.
Tracking technology is increasingly used to warn operators about boats in areas likely to pose a danger to cables.

Remember, these undersea cables play a crucial role in connecting us to the digital world, spanning vast distances beneath the ocean floor! 🌐🌊

Stop spreading #FakeNews

MainOne, which is owned by data center operator Equinix (EQIX.O), opens new tab, said that an "external incident" resulted in a cut to its cable system in the Atlantic Ocean, offshore Cote D'Ivoire along the coast of West Africa. It ruled out human activity as a cause.

The major internet outage affected West and Central Africa on Thursday, with operators of multiple subsea cables reporting failures.
"Our preliminary analysis would suggest some form of seismic activity on the seabed resulted in a break to the cable", MainOne said, adding it would obtain more data when the cable is retrieved during repair.

"Given the distance from land, and the cable depth of about 3 kms (1.86 miles) at the point of fault, any kind of human activity – ship anchors, fishing, drilling etc has been immediately ruled out," it said.
