Stop deceiving yourself! There is no great demand for microbiologists in this country, maybe somewhere else, but certainly not nigeria. Avoid fallacious optimism! Mcb is not a good course in nigeria.

deandavid: bros abeg, what professional courses, can a microbiologist do?

You are asking for professional course as if you can pay for the ones available. Professional courses for mcb graduates has either been scrapped (clinical training), too expensive & not really mainstream mcb (environmental) or too long (food/industrial minimum of 3yrs after nysc). You are not ready for what you are asking for.

You are referring him to institute of safety professionals! The training in environment management is too expensive and does not guarantee employment as he has no working experience. Pls be real!

Hello friends, just stumbled upon this thread and i wish to place my own comment. Currently, im studying env. Biology at YCT. The world is concerned about its env. E.g: global warming, desertification, flooding, extinction of species, oil spillage( bonga oil spill), freezing weather in europe etc. As an env biologist, u can work in any of these : HSE of any company, LAWMA, LASEPA, WHO, ministry of env. And conservation to mention a few. Env. Biologists are on high demand cos d world, even lagos state is very concerned about the env. An example is the plant a tree campaign in lagos state. Currently, env. Biologist are responsible for cleaning the oil spills in bonga, bayelsa state. I am proud 2 be an env. Biologist.

What is this one saying.....It absolutely seem you are a student! Graduate and Tell me where they'll Be looking for you. Start your search from those online sites, they don't have an environmental category.

Hi guys.
I read Environmental Biology. Finished service last year october. Since then, getting anything called white collar job, that has to do with the course, has proved to be VERY hard. People even scoff when you say 'Environmental Biology'. They are always like 'what's this one?'. Thankfully,am fending for myself with my online programmes. I also currently have a minor admin role in an engineering company. Planning to quit the role as soon as my online ventures become strong enough to depend on and head back to school. Have always wanted to be a lecturer. So am looking at going back to school for my Msc and PhD. The current job climate in our country is one that doesnt favor people like us. In the sciences, the only ones that have a chance of getting employed without breaking much sweat are our brothers in the Medicine Faculties. Infact i felt so bad during NYSC. These guys were treated like kings and queens just for reading Medsurg,Medlab,Opt,Anatomy etc. And most of them were retained. However, all of us wont be doctors and nurses(even those that wanted,Jamb didnt allow,LOL). So,i'd advise biology undergrads to start looking at SKILLS they can acquire rather than depending on the jobs that don't exist/or are very hard to come by. Otherwise they'd be in for a rude shock. Looking forward to seeing more guys here.
Very true. Going into other skills is the way out for us. I wished I had read anatomy instead.

hmm...either nigeria values microbiologists or not....you've got to over value yourself first and unleash the God given potentials in you which will serve you for as long as you want it to!
...meanwhile i have this small but mighty opportunity for you all

this is a misconception and u really need to work on ur optimism. if u feel irrelevant u can neva be relevant to the society, nobody will sell you, u hav to sell ur self. there is no hope, there is no hope, but people are succeeding (am an example; Proud Microbiologist B.SC, M.Sc), all depends on ur mentality and grace. not all doctors won white collar jobs, not all anatomists are feeding well neither are all engineers, pharmacists, or even our art coursed colleagues gaining success on a platter of gold.
take it or leave it; microbiology is the backbone of all biomedical sciences(including medicine and pharmacy) and is of great relevance, u can find out only when engrossed in in-depth research.
microbiology can give u a satisfying career with good pay, unless u wasted ur time in school. mind u; noting good comes easy, and greater ones are more difficult to find.
i encourage all, pls do not be discouraged and up the hustle tempo, we all shall get there. if u feel discouraged and accept to be a failure, do not generalize it cos am not one (winners never quit and quitters neva win)

I'm a microbiologist by profession and i will like other microbiologist in Nigeria and diaspora to join me in discussing: 'Life after studying Microbiology'. The question is, are you really practicing your profession? I don't think Nigeria values Microbiologist at all,

I have a first degree B.Sc Microbiology, currently working in a hospital, fresh graduate, am underemployed if u know what I mean (When hospital employ you cos they can't pay a Med. Lab scientist) some of my colleagues have gone back to school to study pharmacy but instead of me to go back to school to study pharmacy with another 4 years plus, I rather apply for DE medicine and surgery. Let me know what am suffering for. Please does anyone know how I get into Medicine, Unilag precisely? Am from Edo state, heard Unilag discriminates alot against non-indigene. My number is 08100254826, whatapp message is allowed
