US warship leaves for Nigeria today
Monday, 21 November 2011

The United States (US) Coast Guard Warship donated to the Nigeria Navy will leave the US for Nigeria today.

The warship will set from Alameda, California, to Nigeria, the North America correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  has reported.

The vessel, designed as a “high endurance” cutter, with a crossing range of 9,600 miles at 20 knots, was donated to Nigeria by the US on May 13.

The ship also has an 80-foot flight deck, capable of handling navy helicopters and can undertake extended patrol missions.

Its capabilities are enhanced by advanced air search and surface search radars, including the AN/SPS-73 digital surface radar system that incorporates a state-of-the-art computerised collision avoidance system.

A ceremony for the departure has been scheduled to take place at  the Coast Guard Island, in Alameda, where it was docked.

The warship is expected to enhance the seaworthiness of the Nigerian Navy and make it well prepared to effectively police, not only the Nigerian territorial waters, but the entire West African coast.

The warship was commissioned to the US Navy in 1968, but was later de-commissioned on March 29, after it had participated in some UN missions in enforcing maritime treaties.

NAN learnt that the ship had not left for Nigeria because the Nigerian crew was  undertaking training on it, while rehabilitation work was being carried out, though it had been renamed Nigeria Navy Thurder F90.

Small patrol cutter, not a warship.

The U.S. can do better than this for a friend.

The boat is a high endurance cutter according to US designation, but would be classed a frigate like Aradu by other navies. Aradu is bigger, but I strongly doubt it has the capabilities of our new NNS Thunder. The US has done very well for us.

gradually, we are recognising the military presence of america. when u accept such gifts, u shld be able to know that every gift has a hiden price tag. america is not a charity organisation neither are they rich to waste funds like us.
gradually, nigeria is turning into a war zone where usa will tell her citizens to leave and in return donate a war ship to protect their business interests.
every hook and cranny of the country has soldiers and our waters have navy in action. we are saw jonathan yesterday as a civilian but the situation in the country is gradually pushing him into military uniforms.
thanks to pdp and the criminal minded programmes.

an old second hand fishing boat  is what the US gives nigeria in exchange for nigeria's vote in favour of the no fly zone over libya - this is reminiscent of the gin and broken mirrors that the europeans used to give the local tribal chiefs in exchange for slaves - is it possible for GEJ to sink any lower than this?

perhaps GEJ plans on using this piece of scrap to start up a trawler business when he is eventually kicked out of office

Is better than non. Lets commend U.S for once. They only dash us. We no get choice, some of you pock-nosing there, can't you guys design one for your country if you know better than those that accepted the gift. They said pride Goethe before a failure. Thank you U.S we no get choice, even if is older than this, we will still accept.

I weep for this country, when did we get so abject and base that we can now gladly and joyfully receive and accept as a national gift a DECOMMISSIONED 1968! boat that a friend DOES NOT need any longer?where is our pride and dignity as nation?GIANT OF AFRICA! cry cry cry cry cry cry.

SMH @ the responses.

Your minds are gradually being programmed to remain recipients of aids and western programme.
Talk about colonial mentality. We can buy state-of-the-art presidential jets for the dumbest presidents but will rather accept a decommisioned outdated water patrol ship and sing america's praise.

This is trash! we should bury our heads in shame. you can never be greater than your master! Thats the latent message.

I guess you basically want others to give you stuff and you still get to choose?
Why not make your own stuff, afterall those who invent, design and build things are human like us, they aren't spirits.

permit me to ask what u and Ur family or generation have contributed to the growth of this country?, or more so, when, if ever u paid Ur tax.

decommissioned or not, its good to have one, when we had non except for the aradu. now we have 2, at least 1 will be functional when the other goes in for maintenance
