yes, some people especially artisans work on the island but have other houses deep into mainland

the transport and stress from far away mainland to their workplace is too far so they stay in shanties on island then go home on weekend or so

They probably pay per day after hustling. I think I read somewhere that that's how prostitutes pay for the brothels their customers meet them at. That adds up depending on how long they stay there. No sane person will pay that lump sum at once for a slum.
