With scarcity of fuel still lingering across the country, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has started implementing sanctions against fuel marketers found to be engaging in unethical practices. A fuel station, Batoson OiI and Gas Limited at Mararaba in Baissa Kurmi Local Government Area of Taraba State, has been sealed off by the NMDPRA for allegedly diverting 18 trucks of Premium Motor Spirit aka Petrol. Via a post on its Twitter handle, NMDPRA said: “Batoson OiI and Gas Ltd Mararaba Baissa Kurmi LGA, Taraba State. Station was sealed for diversion of 18 trucks of PMS between 04/04/24 and 05/05/24”. BACKSTORY As part of actions to ensure fuel availability, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and NMDPRA initiated a 15-day massive supply of over 4,000 petrol trucks to filling stations across the nation between 4th and 6th May 2024. Amidst the outsized ramping up of fuel supply, Nigerians expressed fears that some unethical marketers may divert the fuel or engage in other sharp practices. However, NMDPRA had warned that there would sanctions for anyone found to be diverting petroleum products. Ayo Cardoso, NMDPRA South-West Regional Coordinator, warned that anyone diverting fuel would face a sanction of N500 for each litre diverted. He also said fuel lifted from the depots was being monitored through the manifests, to ensure that they get to the right locations.
