PRESIDENT TINUBU SET TO INAUGURATE PROJECTS TO MARK ONE YEAR IN OFFICE

Ahead of the first anniversary of his administration on 29 May, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu today departed Abuja for Lagos to begin a commissioning spree of projects completed under his administration.

In Lagos on Sunday, the President will inaugurate the concrete-paved road to the nation’s major ports in Apapa and Tin Can Island. The reconstructed road which began under the Muhammadu Buhari Administration was financed by the Dangote Group, using its tax credits.

On the same day, President Tinubu will formally inaugurate, by virtual means, the refurbished Third Mainland Bridge, which has drawn public acclaim for its excellent finishing and aesthetic furnishing. He will also commission, virtually, the rehabilitation of 330 roads and bridges across the country.

The highpoint of the President’s engagements on Sunday will be the inauguration of the iconic Lagos-Calabar Superhighway, estimated to cost about N15 trillion. Work has begun on the legacy project that will connect nine coastal states, with Section Two already awarded to Hitech Construction Limited.

President Tinubu will return to Abuja on Tuesday to begin another round of commissioning. He will first inaugurate the Southern Parkway, which the Nyesom Wike-led FCT Administration named after him.

On Wednesday, the President will attend the National Assembly Dialogue Series, after which he will unveil the National Assembly Library Complex, named after him.

President Tinubu will leave the National Assembly to relaunch the commercialisation of Abuja Light Rail, also known as Abuja Metro. He will symbolically join a train ride to the city centre.

The Abuja Metro was completed in 2018 by the Buhari Administration. It was put into commercial use up till 2020. But with the onset of COVID-19, the train service was abandoned. Vandals descended on the facility, putting it out of use.

FCT Minister Wike, after spending $15 million and building access roads to the various stations, has refurbished it for commercial service.

After the train ride, President Tinubu will also inaugurate the Wuye Flyover-Link Bridge and the Defence Intelligence Agency Headquarters.

On Friday 31 May, President Tinubu will commission the NASENI-Portland Compressed Natural Gas(CNG) Reverse Engineering Centre at Utako.

The true test of leadership in the 21st Century is the ability to grow the economy - SoNature, 2024

Anybody can build infrastructure. In fact, building infrastructure is the easiest way politicians loot the commonwealth of the country, but it takes a leader with exceptional leadership qualities to grow the economy. Tinubu, without a doubt, has been horrible in this aspect.

The Misguided Focus of Nigerian Governments: Infrastructure Over People

In Nigeria, a persistent trend among governments has been the prioritization of large-scale infrastructure projects over direct poverty alleviation and job creation. This approach, while visually impressive and politically advantageous, often overlooks the fundamental needs of the populace. A harsh critique reveals that no matter how sophisticated the infrastructure, its true value is undermined if the human capital it serves is not equally developed.

Critique of the Current Approach
Misaligned Priorities:

Infrastructure Over People: Governments tend to prioritize grand infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and buildings. These projects often serve as visible legacies for politicians but do little to address the immediate needs of the population.
Neglect of Poverty Alleviation: With over 40% of Nigerians living below the poverty line, the focus on infrastructure leaves many without basic necessities such as food, healthcare, and education.
Symbolism Over Substance:

Political Gains: Large projects offer photo opportunities and ribbon-cutting ceremonies that provide instant political capital. However, these projects often lack the substance needed to drive long-term economic growth.
Corruption and Mismanagement: These large projects are frequently marred by corruption and inefficiency, with funds being siphoned off and projects left incomplete or poorly executed.

Human Capital Neglect:
Education and Skills Training: Investing in education and skills training directly empowers individuals, leading to sustainable economic growth. Yet, these areas are frequently underfunded.
Job Creation: Direct investments in sectors that create jobs, like agriculture and small businesses, can immediately uplift communities. However, these are often sidelined in favor of infrastructure projects.
Why Software (Human Capital) is More Important Than Hardware (Infrastructure)
Foundation for Utilization: Infrastructure, like roads and power plants, requires skilled individuals to operate and maintain them. Without a well-educated and healthy populace, these projects remain underutilized or fall into disrepair.
Economic Growth: A nation’s true strength lies in its people. By investing in human capital, the government can foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and a skilled workforce, driving sustainable economic growth.
Steps to Reverse the Trend

Prioritize Human Capital Development:
Education: Increase funding for primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Implement policies that ensure quality education is accessible to all, especially in rural areas.
Vocational Training: Develop vocational training programs to equip the youth with practical skills relevant to the job market.

Direct Investment in Job Creation:
Agriculture: Invest in modern agricultural techniques and provide financial support to farmers. This will not only create jobs but also ensure food security.
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): Provide grants, low-interest loans, and technical support to SMEs, which are the backbone of the economy.

Healthcare:
Universal Health Coverage: Ensure access to basic healthcare for all citizens. A healthy population is more productive and can contribute more effectively to the economy.

Social Safety Nets:
Welfare Programs: Implement social welfare programs that provide financial support to the most vulnerable, ensuring they have a safety net to fall back on.

Transparency and Accountability:
Anti-Corruption Measures: Strengthen anti-corruption agencies and implement strict measures to ensure public funds are used appropriately and efficiently.

Public Participation: Involve communities in decision-making processes to ensure that projects and policies align with their actual needs.
Balanced Infrastructure Development:
Strategic Projects: Focus on infrastructure projects that directly support economic activities, like transportation networks that connect farmers to markets or power projects that ensure stable electricity for businesses.
Maintenance Over New Projects: Allocate funds for the maintenance and upgrading of existing infrastructure to ensure they serve their intended purposes effectively.

Conclusion
Tinubus government's inclination towards grand infrastructure projects often overshadows the more pressing need for poverty alleviation and job creation. While infrastructure is important, it should not come at the expense of developing the nation's human capital. A balanced approach, prioritizing education, healthcare, and job creation alongside strategic infrastructure development, is essential for sustainable growth and development. The true measure of a nation's progress lies not in its physical structures but in the well-being and productivity of its people.

A failure will remain a failure. Peter Obi track records is there for all to see. Need I remind you that Peter Obi has become what he should be in life. Here you are calling a man who is made for life and will feed all your generation down to 3rd generation till he die, and employer of labours both home and international, and you are calling him jobless. Even Tinubu will be laughing at your comments.

Common sense is common, poor Agbado like you who is not sure of his next meal

This man don try small , but inflation and the rate of dollar is what is over shadowing his efforts .

If he can work on those 2 things , and increase the minimum wage to at least 80k or 100k max for the sake of small business and private sectors that won’t be able to afford it if it’s higher than that .

Then we will stop complaining about fuel subsidy removal and electricity tariff removal because those sectors need investment real bad and investors put money where there is profit!

I commend the president and his team on their one year in office. They concentrated on finishing the projects other administrations started instead of starting new ones, apart from the coastal road; a first in Nigeria.
