Governors of the ix southwest states and Edo will lead prominent Nigerians to launch Yoruba Education Trust Fund (YETFUND) this Tuesday in Lagos.

The Education fund which was put in place to rescue the decay being witnessed in the education sector in Nigeria today, especially in the Southwest will also be attended by the governors of Delta, Kogi and Kwara states as well as other eminent Yoruba personalities.

They have resolved to intervene in education development in the south west.

Speaking on the programme, Chairman Public Presentation Committee of YETFUND and former Chairman of Daily Times of Nigeria, Akogun Tola Adeniyi said the Yoruba nation is worried by the performances in education in Nigeria generally and in the South West in particular and “we have resolved to take the bull by the horn”, he said.

He said YETFUND commissioned Professor Babatunde Fetuga who is the Chairman of Research and Planning Committee of the Fund to carry out a broad analysis of the education sector and the result was abysmal.

As a result, Adeniyi noted there is no going back in their resolve to save the education of the Yoruba children and make them back to the old fame the region is known for.

He said YETFUND has decided to intervene on six major areas which would essentially formed the implementation of their Mission and Vision.

He listed the six major interventions as capacity building; Curriculum Development; Management of schools; infrastructure; educational support services and the informal adult and technical education (vocational training).

Also, former Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile –Ife and a member of the Board of YETFUND, Professor Wale Omole said the concept of YETFUND began about three years ago when piqued by the deplorable deterioration in the standard of education in the country and more embarrassingly so in the South West.

He said some Yoruba elders decided that the time for complaining should come to an end and some serious steps should be take to stem the dangerous trend.

He said the Fund at inception was led by the former Governor of Central Bank, Pa Ola Vincent and that the steering committee formalised the documentation of the Fund and in November last year inaugurated a 60-member Governing Council which Executive committee came up with an intervention strategy in the education system of the South West.

Why Edo state. What has Edo state got to do with Yoruba language. Nothing.
What an insult to Edo state. Anyway, Edos will resist this idiotic move as usual.
Nonsense.

Good show, let's get things moving again.  Our education system is getting worse and the decline needs to be stopped.

Good idea to get education going again. But it will be idiotic to include Yoruba language in Edo state, Delta state and parts of Kwara and Kogi that are not Yoruba speaking.
This moronic idea has to stop.

The ability to read, comprehend and demonstrate understanding is lost on a lot of our youth.  The above comment is a clear example of this.  The poster did not bother to read the article or if "it" did read the article, "it" was unable to understand the article's content.

I do not blame the poster as I am sure if "it" had gone to a better educational system, "it" would have understood that no one is talking about forcing "Yoruba language" down anybody's throat.  The emphasis was on improving the educational system in the area (ie subjects typically are Math, English, Sciences).

In addition, the article did not say other inhabitants (ie non-Yoruba) of these states would be discriminated against.  This is how "silly" threads reach 31 pages when "tribal" wars start.

The thread title should be changed and states such as Edo, Kwara, Delta and Kogi excluded.
Secondly, this idiotic thread has no business in the politics section but education section.

Andre, it is Edo state along with the 6 sw states that are leading the way! Other states (Delta, Kogi, Kwara) governors who want to the involved also came! They will not be taught Yoruba language, it's just that its a COLLABORATIVE EFFORT!

@The bolded, let's hope it is so. Moreover, you are too old in nairaland and should know by now that education section exists.

I think the death of Ojukwu is frying most of their brain cells.
Been viewing a lot of these classless Igbos jumping on every Yoruba-related thread to vent off their loss.

A good move. If they make it transparent (especially the financials), I'd be happy to contribute and encourage my friends to do so also.

Thank you . Without knowing it, Ngodgigha1 eloquently demonstrated the reason for this effort aimed at salvaging our education system. If some only see "Yoruba" and nothing else from this laudable effort , does this not glaringly demonstrate how some Nigerians can no longer read, assimilate and comprehend?

@POST

Nigerians are very funny people indeed. The title of the thread did not leave any undiscerning onlooker in doubts. It is foolhardy to attempt to construe a different meaning to the statements which had been reiterated in more ways than one in the essay. A sentence, they say, conveys one thought.

This is not first time EDO State and some part of Delta State will be subjugated by educational system that emphasizes the dominance of Yoruba language or culture.
