Sylva Dares Jonathan, Threatens To Release Sensitive Documents

In an apparent daring move, embattled governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, may have secretly de-classified very sensitive government documents to sway public sympathy that his widely reported non-performance was not his own doing after all.

Impeccable sources claimed that the move was targeted at his predecessor, who is now president, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who is widely believed to have propped up the winner of the recent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries in the state, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson.

Sylva, who was disqualified by PDP National Headquarters from the party’s nomination process, is already in court challenging the decision, even as speculations are rife that the ruffled governor is weighing various other options.

But the governor has described the report as another desperate attempt by his opponents to further widen the gap between him and the president.

According to a source, who spoke to our correspondent, the governor, though far away in Abuja since his ordeal reached a certain level, has allegedly directed that some very sensitive documents he inherited from Jonathan be clandestinely deposited in the public domain.

“In the next few days, you will know the real persons who impoverished the state before Sylva came on board; you just wait and see because all the noise about non-performance of the governor has to be put in their proper perspectives for the public to know whether or not Sylva meant well for the state when he assumed office in 2007.

“The young man came into office with very high zeal and vision for the state but what he met on ground was very appalling, I mean, the huge debt burden as a result of so many contracts that underwent variations, some in controversial manners.

“So, when people begin to open their mouth and say Sylva did not perform, they are living in a world of ignorance, because they do not know what is happening; maybe, they need to know some very classified details,” he stated.

It could not be confirmed whether the continuous advertorials in some national dailies (Nigerian Tribune not included) by Sylva’s Adviser on Security, Perekeme Richard-Kpodoh, had some connections with the governor’s latest move against his predecessor, but it was gathered that such documents to be made available include sensitive Executive Council memos and approvals made in respect of some capital projects as well as subsequent variations made therein.

Meanwhile, Sylva’s Chief of Staff, Sam Ogbuku, State Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Tiwei Oruminighe and another top aide of the governor have fled the state as the heat on their principal gets tougher.

Oga Sylva, what are you about to reveal that bright Nigerians have not already discerned? Is it that GEJ wass "part of the system of corruption that had impoverished the Niger Delta for decades." (Oronto Douglas) even if he is now pretending otherwise? Like I always say, one of the biggest problem of Nigeria is how those who cause the problems are able to easily hand-select others who are part of the problem to continue the cycle where they all get to pretend to be the solution.

WikiLeaks: Jonathan was corrupt - Aide
Thursday, 08 September 2011 19:23 administrator

By Abubakar Imam

The herculean resolve by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) to absolve President Goodluck Jonathan and his family from past corruption allegations seems to be hitting the rocks as his close confidante and his former Commissioner for Information, Mr. Oronto Douglas once opened a can of worms on the president suggesting that the Commander-in-Chief is indeed not a saint.
EFCC Chairman, Mrs Farida Waziri had vehemently denied on Wednesday, that the First Lady. Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan was investigated of any corruption allegation, describing media reports as mischievous.
"Let me state clearly that the commission will not allow itself to be used to drag innocent people's names into crimes, cases or allegations they know nothing about", she told a visiting non-governmental organisation, the Women Empowering and Enriching Lives (WEELS).
However, Douglas, who was also a human rights activist had once revealed, according to a WikiLeaks report, that on December 18, 2006, just after the then Bayelsa state Governor, Goodluck Jonathan was named the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) presidential running mate to the late President Umaru Yar'adua,  that Jonathan was well respected among Ijaw leaders for building a successful development programme in Bayelsa, and had been a good governor.
But a new WikiLeaks cable showed that surprisingly, only the day before, Mr. Douglas' true feelings about Jonathan had been different.  In a conversation with an American official, Douglas described Jonathan as "part of the system of corruption that had impoverished the Niger Delta for decades."
When asked by the American for more explanation on the   "successful development programme in Bayelsa", Douglas  said "even his development initiative is viewed with skepticism by the populace".
He said that the outstanding corruption charges against Jonathan and his wife were troubling, and that while Jonathan enjoyed the support of the "Ijaw leaders," the "restive youth" had little respect for the "so-called leaders."

Douglas, who is now a Senior Special Assistant to Jonathan on Strategy, Research and Documentation, disclosed how close the then Governor of Rivers state, Mr. Peter Odili, came to being named ahead of Jonathan as Yar'Adua's running mate.
"It wasn't until Yar'Adua was at the podium and publicly announced Goodluck Jonathan to be his running mate that [Odili] realised he was not the PDP's vice- presidential candidate," the writer learned from Douglas.
According to the story, a friend of Douglas' who had had access to Yar'adua's speech told him that Odili's name was mentioned as the running mate, but just before the convention, it was excised.
Douglas was of the view that Odili had fallen victim of an EFCC which claimed "significant malfeasance" on his part, including an instance where N60 billion was earmarked for a gas plant project that actually cost only N20 billion."
Mr. Douglas also commented on the PDP gubernatorial candidate for Bayelsa State, whom he thought would be Timi Alaibe, who was then the Executive Director of Finance for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Alaibe, Douglas asserted, would be "the worst possible choice."
When our correspondent contacted Mr. Douglas for comment, he declined to answer phone calls nor respond to a text message sent to him.

You are calling others "olodo"? You obviously are the big "olodo". If you understand Nigerian politics , even to a decent level, you will know what is going on here. Sylva is sending subliminal messages out to GEJ . The two are at daggers drawn with GEJ clearly set to "deal with" Sylva. The Bayelsa Governor is not thick enough not to know GEJ has it in for him. Sylva has already been denied the PDP ticket . What could be a greater signal the battle lines are drawn beyond the point of return?

You are the  "olodo" fooled , because of Sylva's deliberately fawning language, into thinking Sylva does not know 'what is up'. Nigerian political history should give you enough examples of leaders maintaining diplomatic speak , in public, while the acrimony ,bile and subtle threats is toxic, murderous and real. After IBB bitterly attacks OBJ, again and again, does he not fawningly, routinely and decietfully say publicly he respects OBJ "as his superior", "commander" et al? You clearly don't understand the linguistic subterfuge of our leaders even as history should have provided you with many examples to get 'wise' . Do you need the case study of Atiku versus OBJ political wars we are still seeing even to date,  interspaced with periods of politeness and fawning language, to understand the concept of political "cold war" ?

What is not in doubt is that , between Sylva and GEJ, one of them remains the President and thus more powerful . Nonetheless , Sylva is using double speak and a passive-aggressive style to threathen GEJ. If that is not clear to you then ask for a refund from those who educated you because, clearly, you don't get it. Below , from the article I supplied , is an educating example for you:

You really believe Atiku had something concrete on OBJ but held it back and deliberately decided to send 'subliminal messages'? Humour me. If only you knew half as much as you claim about Nigerian politics you'd know people desperate enough to take blood oaths would go to any length to defend their interest but would certainly not resort to sending 'subliminal messages' ask Fashola his experience with Lord Tinubu!

As usual, you miss the point. It was you who indicated that others are "olodos" because they "missed" this part:

But the governor has described the report as
another desperate attempt by his opponents
to further widen the gap between him and the
president.

I then had to point it out to you that Sylva's sycophantic language and pretensions to a good relationship with the Presidency means absolutely nothing beyond diplomacy . Sylva and GEJ are at daggers drawn. No matter of civil language can detract from that. Sylva , as a sitting Governor, has already been deprived of the PDP guber ticket. Other occurences ,such as shown below, demonstrates clearly that Sylva knows he is in an OBJ vs OGD type Battle .

Sylva, because of the deference that has to be shown to the office of a sitting President,  is only masking his own fightback in saccarine language laced with vitriolic undertones. The point with the Atiku/OBJ example is that polite langauge was still pretensiously deployed by both sides even though the mutual malevolence was real and fundamental.

Sylva flays arrest, detention of supporters
On November 29, 2011 · In News

By Samuel Oyadongha
Yenagoa — Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State, yesterday, condemned the arrest and unlawful detention of 70 of his supporters in Lokoja, Kogi State.

The governor’s supporters were intercepted about 5.00pm on Sunday on their way to Abuja to show solidarity with the governor at the hearing of the case on tenure for five Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governors at the Supreme Court, scheduled for yesterday.

Governor Sylva, in a statement issued yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Doifie Ola, said: “Our constitution allows for freedom of movement as well as freedom of association for every Nigerian.

“This is another in the series of recent happenings by agents of the Federal Government to trample democracy in the face and truncate the rights of Bayelsa people to freely decide their political future.”

He described the arrest as a sad reminder of Nigeria’s dark days of military rule. The governor, however, pleaded with all his supporters to remain calm and law abiding in the face of undue provocation.

“The will of God through the people of Bayelsa State shall surely prevail in the evolving political imbroglio in the state,” he added.

Comprising mainly PDP Ward chairmen, the supporters were travelling in six buses and a car. They were arrested and taken to Police ‘A’ Division headquarters in Lokoja where they were detained and escorted to Okene to embark on a return journey to Bayelsa State, yesterday morning.

Intelligence report

A security source said they had intelligence report that the governor’s supporters were heading to Abuja to protest against the just-concluded Bayelsa State PDP primaries.

However, one of those detained, who identified himself as Ebiowei, dismissed the claim.

He said: “Our explanation that we were travelling to Abuja to show solidarity with our governor at the hearing of the case on tenure for five PDP governors fell on deaf ears. They took us to Police A Division at Lokoja.

“We were detained till the next day and escorted back by armed policemen to Kogi State border with Edo.”

Senate to deliberate on ACN supporters’ arrest

Written by Oluwole Josiah, Abuja

The Senate on Thursday voted to consider a motion on the arrest and breach of the fundamental rights of supporters of the Action Congress of Nigeria barred from entering Abuja by the police on Wednesday.

Members of the Osun State chapter of the ACN were arrested on their way to Abuja on Tuesday and detained till Wednesday by the police in Kogi State.

Senator Sola Adeyeye from Osun State rose on Order 42 of the Standing Rules of the Senate relating to matters of urgent national importance, urging the Senate to consider at another plenary the barring of ACN supportersfrom coming into Abuja.

He said the supporters were on their way to Abuja given that they had the right to do so as guaranteed by the constitution, but were not allowed free movement into the city of Abuja.

After presenting his case, senators, through a voice vote, were unanimous in their decision to take the motion on Tuesday.

The supporters were said to be on their way to Abuja to attend the trial of the former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

The Osun State Vice-Chairman of the party, Chief Ishola Oyewumi, in Lokoja on Thursday, said their ordeal started at about 6:41pm on Tuesday when the Osun Government coaster bus in which they were travelling was accosted by policemen at Jamata village, near the River Niger Bridge.

He said the policemen almost 10 in number immediately ordered all the occupants of the bus to disembark for identification and thorough checking.

He said, “All of us promptly complied but nothing incriminating was found in the bus with number plate OSGH 192.”

He said they were surprised when the police insisted that they could not proceed on their trip, ordering them to go back to Osun.

The party leader said before they could offer further explanation, the police ordered everybody back into the bus and directed the driver to return them to their take-off point.

He said the policemen escorted the bus to a point at Kabba junction before turning back.

Oyewumi said they decided to turn back and continue with the journey only for them to run into the same policemen at Jamata village.

He said the policemen were infuriated by that action and immediately arrested them.

Among those detained were the state auditor of the party, Mrs. Funke Ogundele, Welfare Officer, Mr. John Olayemi and the state ACN youth leader, Mr Rasheed Adeniji

Others are Assistant secretary, Mr. Omolaoye Akintola, Assistant Public Relations Officer, Mr. Samson Oyebode, Assistant Financial Secretary, Mr. Bakare Idera, among others.

Oyeumi said he and his colleagues and were made to sleep in the open without food and water until about 2pm on Wednesday when they were released to the Kogi Chairman of the party, Alhaji Haddy Ametuo.

Why's this guy sounding too desperate. Does he need to threaten people before getting his point across? Why not just join another party if you think Bayelsans love you and will vote for you irrespective of party allegiance. Chris Ngige has done it, you too can do it.
