An Abuja magistrate court has sentenced to three-year jail term an ex-spokesperson of the Nigeria's extremist Boko Haram sect blamed for scores of attacks, including the August suicide bombing of UN headquarters here, killing 23 people and injuring more than 80 others.

Chief Magistrate Oyebola Oyewumi had convicted Ali Konduga for felony on November 22 after he pleaded guilty to the one-count charge against him and asked for leniency.

The magistrate however deferred sentencing to a later date because the second accused person in the case, Ali Ndume, a serving senator, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

At the November 22 hearing of the matter, the prosecutor, whose name was simply given as C. I. Osagie, had told the court that the accused persons conspired to commit felony, breach of official trust, and criminal intimidation by sending anonymous text messages to some senior public officials, including the attorney-general of the federation, contrary to Sections 79, 98 and 398 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

what the fuck are you smoking?. . .spewing out such lame arguments in a blind defense of an utterly disgusting judicial system is sickening, Just sickening!

Boko Haram is a terrorist organization, all members, present and past, should bear the joint blame for murder activities in which the organization is complicit and to which it has accepted responsibility for.  Attempting to separate the spokesman from those planting bombs will result in miscarriage of Justice at best.

In law, the ultimate should be intent. , which if established should bear the same degree of punishment with actual action. . . . A financier of terrorist activities is a terrorist. . . a spokesman for terror groups is a terrorist. . .the law should make an example of them, none of these animals deserve their places among humans. . . .any Judgment short of hanging them by their ballz is totally laughable.

This ruling is a further blow to the Nigerian Judicial system.  The same law that will send gays to a 14 year jail term!. . .

ABUJA, Dec 6 (Reuters) - A Nigerian Islamist sect member was sentenced on Tuesday to three years in prison for criminal intimidation, while charges against a senator who is accused of working with him were filed in Abuja's high court.

Ali Sanda Konduga pleaded guilty on Nov. 22 to the charges, which relate to threatening text messages sent to politicians during his time as a spokesman for Boko Haram, a radical Islamist sect behind dozens of deadly attacks this year.

Konduga asked the court to treat him with leniency and pledged to help authorities tackle Boko Haram.

"In view of the plea for leniency, this court hereby sentences you, Ali Sanda Konduga, to three years in prison," Judge Oyebola Oyewumi said in an Abuja magistrates court. The charges carried a maximum sentence of nine years.

At the hearing last month, Senator Ali Ndume pleaded not guilty to charges of passing classified information to an unauthorised person and of criminal intimidation, for his alleged involvement with Konduga.

Ndume's case was withdrawn from the magistrates court and four new charges were presented to an Abuja high court this week, but he has yet to attend the court to deliver his plea. Court sources said the case may begin on Thursday or Friday.

The charges against Ndume include providing Konduga with politicians' phone numbers and not disclosing information to authorities under Nigeria's Terrorism Prevention Act.

Boko Haram, meaning "Western education is forbidden" in the local Hausa language, has been blamed for dozens of attacks in the remote northeast of Africa's most populous nation this year, mostly targeting authority figures.

It also claimed responsibility for two bombings in the capital Abuja this year, including a suicide attack on United Nations headquarters in August, which killed 24 people.

Nigeria's intelligence agency, the state security service, has said there is a strong political element to Boko Haram's violence. af.reuters.com/article/topNews/idAFJOE7B504S20111206

You must find out what charges the police brought against. The court will only convict a man based on the charges. How long a jail term is is dependent in part on the prosecution.

Don't blame the court, the same lame charges was brought against Ndume.

If al zawahiri get arrested in nigeria, surely he would not get more than 5yrs behind bar. What a woeful judgement, if a whole spokesman of BH terrorist who has sent 100s of innocent souls to their early grave can be judged in a magistrate court and sent to just only 3yrs in jail? Then if abu mutalab was caught in Nigeria surely he would have been a free man long ago. This kind of judgement would really encourages young BH, after all the boss get caught and received a white glove sentence anyway shocked  what kind of administration do we have ? undecided embarassed
