Fatal Error !
by Elemento_pcx & s4r4d0 ,
"Seja você mesmo mas não seja sempre o mesmo" , G. o Pensador ,

The message in Portuguese translates as

"Be yourself but not always the same" , G. The Thinker ,

Two email addresses are provided by the hackers if anyone needs any help (it's uncertain whether you would contact them for help regarding the website defacement, or to have the profundity of the quote explained to you).

Of course, it's perfectly possible that the email addresses listed belong to people who have no knowledge of the hack - but with the quote written in Portugeuse, it certainly wouldn't be a surprise to see a Brazilian connection.

If you run a website make sure you are doing everything to keep it as secure as possible - for both your organisation's sake, and that of your users. If you haven't already done so, read this informative paper by SophosLabs, "Securing websites", which covers some of the issues.

I just visited www.nigeria.gov.ng and it is down - your thoughts

Is the Nigerian Government slack in hiring competent technology consultants to build and maintain a symbolic presence like our national website?

What I find interesting is that the site went down +2 days or so after the voluntarily designed site was announced to the world. Are they a part of NL or any of the other boards where the announcement was made?

Very interesting. . .

I think it also speaks a lot about the Nigerian Community of IT practitioners (home and abroad). unfortunately we work in silos (individuals and corporations) - while brilliant on our own - together we have not formed a visible presence like India, Europe, Asia and the US. It shows in the way majority of Nigerian firms prefer outsourced foreign providers - Our Technology Agencies and Institutions get a budget yearly and dollar funding from other nations and we still crawl to form a cohesive, united, world-class IT Community. I sometimes wonder whether Ministry of Technology has long-term sustainable plans for this sector - it is already going the way of the Kano Groundnut Pyramids sad
