This budget like every other budget that has been churned out is taking us round a vicious circle. 72% of the budget for recurrent expenditure shows a govt that is not just ready to deliver. From past experience the implementation (of capital expenditure) has been low. The recurrent portion has to be spent by every means possible. So when they talk about low implementation it is in the area of capital expenditure.

Defence has the biggest share; simply means that all resources will be used to secure the country in 2012, so Nigerians should expect little. If this (SECURITY) is not achieveable the status quo continues. (Or me thinks more Nigerians will be drafted to the forces 2 fight the war?? this is employment u know!!)

Nigeria deserves more than this. We deserve more than sycophancy. We deserve a budget breakdown that is achieveable, that will tell us in clear terms where the nation is headed 2 in the various sectors- Education, Health, Power( which is the bed rock of every other thing), Petroleum etc

Nigerians should realise that 72% of the 2012 proposed budget is for some select few also known as govt officials and their retinue of aids, this group of people the last time i checked are so greedy that from the 28% remaining for capital expenditure only about 5% will get to the masses (aided greatly by CORRUPTION).

The budget should start by reducing the number of aids drastically ( not something we do over 10 yrs) all those hangers on should be shelved. An implication that the recurrent will drop and there will be an increase in resources for Capital expenditures.

The budget tell us the mind of the leadership, I'm afraid there's nothing new. Same old story. Really SAD sad

VoodooDoll: Budget Breakdown per Daily Trust

President Goodluck Jonathan, this afternoon, presented the proposed 2012 budget to the joint session of the National Assembly.

The proposed 2012 budget stands at N4.749 Trillion naira, representing about 6 percent increase over the N4.48 Trillion in 2011.

The petroleum subsidy allocation was not included in the budget further confirming that subsidies on petrol will likely be abolished by this month, sending prices of petrol to figures in the region of between N140-N150 per litre from the current N65 per litre.

The House will now deliberate on the proposal and return the proposal to the President after their deliberations.

While delivering his speech before the presentation, Jonathan said that "the 2011 elections, the inauguration of the new administration as well as constitutional amendment processes, all affected the full implementation of the 2011 budget" He also said "the 2012 budget will be a stepping stone to Nigeria's transformation".

Speaking earlier on the determination of the National Assembly to ensure the full implementation of the 2012 budget through their oversight functions, Senate President David Mark remarked that Nigeria has "what it takes to be a world power, but we have never really tasked ourselves in this regard."

Shouldn't we all be going out with machetes and demanding for the heads of our senators and representatives on a sacrificial calabash? nothing else should compensate for this daylight robbery of the Nigerian people and selfish allocation of wealth in a country dangerously populated with young restless jobless population.

We ended up electing bandits, criminals, thieves, and rouges as legislators who have dubiously and selfishly moved their budgets and overheads to statutory transfer, such that even if they decide to consume 90 percent of the budget, there's nothing the executive nor the judiciary can do about it. . . . .such despicable robbery!!!!

These filthy thugs are set to consume 8.4 percent of the budget, for simply sitting their egg heads down and coming up with anti man-lover laws? in this same country where several schools are dilapidated and learning conditions pitiable? this country is gone to the dogs, this country is finished!

@^^ I agree with your sentiments grin grin. Seriously, do you not think that it is about time we started collecting/collating names and addresses of everybody/relatives in power in Nigeria/abroad.- children, wife(ves), relatives, girlfriends/boyfriends, business associates especially their asian collaborators?. Sincerely, it has to be "bloody" without qualms/sentiments else we'll remain the same- regressing backwards into oblivion. The BH has shown us the way albeit not quite progressive but we have to be methodical and clinical about it. No politician nor even some of our so called business persons will be spared the potential anarchy/fire next time cool. The time for "pseudo-intellectualism" is fast coming to an end. BH has actually drawn the iine on the sand. We either do the right thing or die not trying at all. Sentiments are over.

And how is that fight against Boko haram working out for you?

Meanwhile our children are dying of malaria, mothers are dying in childbirth, schools are decaying but the soldiers are getting FATTER, with Boko Haram is still murdering at will. Jonah doesn't even consider them as "terrorists"!

Nigerian Government Expenditure In West Africa
Since most of the countries had their independence in the late 1950’s and the 1960's, these West African countries included Nigeria.
Since the independence of these nations, their budgets have been increasing every year after year. This trend reflects in the increase in the expenditure of the government.
The following reasons have been given to account for the general increase. Nearly all the governments in this region have been forced by the increasing populations to increase the existing social infrastructure. As a result, a lot of money has been used to expand existing schools, hospitals; water works etc, in the countries.
