kokoA:

The question is "Have you gone to Kano before?". Keep in mind that a good number of people you find in Lagos do not actually live in Lagos, people come in from Ogun state to work in Lagos every day and go back to their houses after work, also some people come in from other part of Naija to do business. Can you count them among Lagos population?
everything u just said abt kano xcept the fact thapt pple who live in ogun go to work in lagos exist in Lagos as well, ur argument is very weak.

Re: Why Is Abuja The Capital Of Nigeria by ov: 10:22am On Dec 16, 2011
Y Abuja is the capital of nigeria is cus it in the middle. In the case of wars its hard to get to the seat of power.

For lagos it was capital by brits cus it was one of the closest cities to the coast thus locating there eased their evil intentions. Also lagos being at the coast makes it easier to hit our capital from water, air etc. So lagos was considered and UNSAFE capital for NIgeria

But wettin b d essense of this post?

We get better challenges ahead.

The Abuja sef, na name, no respect sef, just politically placed for exploits, beggars take over the streets. Gwags in abuja, is an apology, the university only GOd knws the name.

Uniform development in Abuja should have taken place a long time ago, u cant hustle because sens, P.a's, s.A's etc will kill the common man's dream.

nothing wrong with abuja being the capital, and frankly no one should be having restless nights trying to figure out why.

Instead there are over 36 state capitals, some of which were regional and from older states, yet they still look like they hadn't been updated since 1960 (i.e Ibadan).

Where are the stadiums, air ports, hospitals, univerisities, and other world class structures in this so-called giant of Africa.

That's were you should be thinking along.

we'll get there bro... We're almost there self... Gej is wacked, but i still rate his admin average though..
The Airports are shining, Roads getting back to shape etc.

The problems of Nigeria is more external than internal. Scholars of the international politics know what i mean..... Although that is not enough reason for our Leaders to be ripping us dry, but that is the African mindset for you *let me reserve/save for my unborn kids*

a Nigeria without the gimmicks of Britain and USA ought to be amongst the Top 5 world powers by now, but this is not to be because we are a threat to many Top Power's interest here in the Continent..... Hence we must be kept busy with so many troubles to nip in the bud!

Hope i didn't derail the thread?

aribisala0: it is simply NOT TRUE that Calabar was EVER the capital of Nigeria .Nigeria came into existence in 1914  so for this claim to be true it must have been capital IN or AFTER 1914.
we must remember that the Lagos Colony was a separate entity from the Southern Protectorate until 1906 .

As such Calabar was never a capital city from the time of the 1914 Amalgamation but was a capital of   part/NOT ALL of "Southern Nigeria" i.e Niger Coast Protectorate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Nigeria_Protectorate

Calabar was the capital of southern nigeria, which yorubaland was not part of.
Yorubas are and were not southern nigerians.

The long term implication of this radical political agenda is to force a great deal of moderate Muslims to move and relocate from the North to the south at the same time force Christians and southerners leaving in the North back to the South. I said it long time ago that the northern States that decided to instituted Sharia laws by so doing seceded from Nigeria but are still receiving the benefits of being in Nigeria,OBJ allowed it in the first place.

GAR3TH: To be frank, I hate abuja, at least the location. Why must everything revolve around tribes in Nigeria. Who cares if it on one mans land or not and why put the capital in the middle of the country?

worst case scenario i would have preferred lokoja, but why build a city in the middle of nowhere?

Every place is in the middle of nowhere. It is what you make of the place that makes it become ''somewhere''. Abuja is a top city. And yes it does help to unify the country by being placed at the geographical CENTER of the country.

It is wrong to describe it as ''the north''. It is at the CENTER of the country, NOT ''the north''.

Anybody who wants to inject their ethnicity poison into the whole matter should go and park very well..

efisher: Having the capital @ Abuja is one of the best things to have happened to Nigeria.

Truly. It was a masterstroke of political genius by the Nigerian govt.

Today, it makes it that bit harder to split the country, as no region wants to let go of their stake in Abuja. Do you know there are all sorts of multi-billion dollar projects still coming up in Abuja, in addition to what we have there now? Abeg make una leave matter. Naija will never split. smiley

you really sure about that?

cashmentor:

Of course. In each of the regions it is the elite that dictate the course of action, not the 'grassroots' who generally believe the elite have the right to lead. All of those elite are seriously invested in Abuja. On a private level, many own homes and businesses there, and with various projects lined up for that city, each will be looking to lay their stake, with their regions represented in the various deals that will be done etc. This translates to regional interests. So the idea of Nigeria splitting up is entirely out of the question. Only those who don't understand the way the country works entertain such illusions.

Case and point, on why Abuja is pointless. Since when does a city mainly populated buy the rich, become a symbol of unification. So just because a Capital is located in the center of the country, that will stop ethnic disputes? well, to date, it has not stopped the disputes nor violence. Fact remains that the creation of Abuja was pointless and was created based on ego rather than in the minds of the general public.

BTW when people say south or north, they are talking about colonial boundaries not geography.

I never said Abuja would STOP ethnic disputes. Go and re-read what I wrote. As for your "colonial boundaries", you need to get with the program. Colonial rule is over, and there are no "colonial boundaries" in Nigeria. As for Abuja being "mainly populated by the rich", I doubt you've ever set foot in Abuja. If you have, you'll notice that the majority of folks you'll see around are ordinary Nigerians, mostly civil servants and business people. The city's population is approaching 2 million and rising. Nigerians have no problems with the city.

Stop misinforming people on this forum.
1) The debate about the suitability of Lagos as the Federal Capital started shortly after independence. Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe around 1963 had suggested that the Federal capital be moved to a location in the middle of Nigeria because it will be almost equidistant from parts of the country and even suggested Kafachan. Several other States men contributed to the debate with the names of several towns around the middle belt.
2)In 1975 ,Gen Murtalar Muhammed inaugurated the Justice Akinola Aguda panel to look for a suitable location for the new federal capital and this panel recommended the sparsely populated town of Abuja and swathes of land carved out from surrounding States like Niger and Benue-Plateau States.
3)Legend have it that both Abuja and Suleja were founded by brothers, Abu and Sule .Both were reluctant vassal States of the emir of Zazzau in the 19th century.Their locations or names were never swapped.

DRANOEL:
@cashmentor
it wasnt just northners that suggest the moving of the capital to abuja, infact the aguda headed 6man panel had only one northner!

the idea then was to look for a place more suitable to all nigerians and to correct the mistakes of lagos, also security of the location from external attacks was considered! among the places considered were lokoja, makurdi, jos, keffi! but these places already had established towns/cities and as such were ruled out!
the place we now call abuja was actually suleja but the name was changed and abuja became suleja and vice versa
