My previous thread about melon and water melon farm during the last raining season https://www.nairaland.com/8074655/me-working-melon-egusi-farm

I know that this is coming a bit late for me to post as everything has come to an end from the start to the harvest. I forgot completely to do this, may be na Tinubu's palava caused it cheesy
I planted one plot of dry season maize intercropping it with few tomato and okro plants and they all came out well. Some maize plants even carried two cobs. Tomatoes too did exceptionally well (we gave a lots of them out) while we harvested okro too a few times, those of them that survived the snails attacks after germination BTW.
And of course, there was another three separate plots that turned out to be a disaster, waste of resources and my efforts, I waited a bit long to start. Labour cost, herbicides cost, fertiliser cost and my time and effort went down the drain. But, that's farming without source of irrigation for you anyway. And to think that many people spent hugely on this dry season maize farming without seeing positive result is heartbreaking.
Let me add this: this is me using home gardening to kill boredom 😜

Why did the 3plot of land not do well? Was it due to lack of water since you used fertilizer?

Combination of factors but lack of adequate rainfall was the main culprit. I planted it a little bit late. The short duration of rainfall affected many maize farms

Next time if you want to plant dry season maize, it should not be later than mid August. Don't plant maize in September if you are depending on natural rainfall.

Yeah, I knew. That's why the first one plot was okay. Even some people who planted early had to replant again when the temporary drought killed off the first set.
But in the case of my three plots, there were roaming goats at the time of planting the first plot which was inside the fence. Goats were later restrained from roaming and I decided to use the opportunity but I guess it was too late

Why is farming, not a rich man's vocation? They either prefer politics, real estate, oil and gas stations or banking.

I hate the poor and lower middle class feeding the upper middle class and the rich.

You want to buy their okra for N100 but you can pay N100,000 for the local interstate flight. I wouldn't subscribe to that system of operation.

There are various sad stories, both sides share blame, master and apprentice but generally the apprentice system of Igbo people is still alive and healthy. True that thaere is a small sector that prefers "sales boys" and such but at the end of the day such arrangement always fails. A sales boy will always remain a sales boy, a thing that the sales boy will be keenly aware of. Business thrive or collapse, non of his business, as long as he is paid his salary. An apprentice on the other hand expects to become a businessman in the future, that is why he will take an active interest in his masters business and this way both parties benefit.

Haha nature has its way of always seeking balance.

Capitalism is unnatural and good thing it is also unsustainable because you can't satisfy greed in a world of finite resources.

Farming is natural. We all just lost our ways.

I'm quite young but I've read A LOT of books on ideologies, history and evolution. And I'm certain now that I must leave the city, go back to my state of origin, purchase a land in the rural area from the rulers in charge(the land should be given for free), build a little structure for myself to sleep(yes just one room and bathroom) and begin farming. This is what ALL GRADUATES need immediately after school. You can choose to take it or continue city life but the option MUST be there.

Purchasing the land now is my issue...

I want to dig a well on a huge plot of land to do small farming but I don't know the best a d cheapest means of automated watering. I should be able to connect the device into the well and to the sprayers, so I can spray for at least 2 hours in the morning and two hours before 6pm.
