20 liters of petrol go burn all 3 million tyres finish!!

You don't even need that much. Tyres by themselves are used as fuel in for cement kilns. They burn. Ideally those tyres should be recycled.
Knowing naija, some of those tyres may not have been burned sef. "Somebody" might just resale and reinject them into the system

3 million tyres is a hell of a lot of rubber to destroy safely.

Out of interest, how are tyres destroyed in Nigeria? I hope they're not simply set on fire, tyres in that quantity certainly can't be burnt without serious environmental and health issues. The pall of thick acrid, black smoke won't be limited to Nigeria either, neighbouring countries will also suffer the effects.

Destroying 3 million tyres safely is NO JOKE. i am sure of this !
No biggie about the N20 million spent. The biggest challenge is ensuring part of the sub-standard 3 million tyres does not get to the sales market.

Pls, can somebody tell SON that those tyres could be re-processed to produce carbon black which can sold to a lot of print ink coys as pigment. i weep for this country, are there no engineers in SON that could have given them better advice than burning which is detrimental to the environment?

Kobojunkie:

Why burn them when they could be recycled? What is the reason for them telling us this anyway?

Paid to pollute our air for nothing? Do you know how many companies would have gained from those tires being recycled? Think how many miles of pavement this could have gone to, instead of being burnt in the way I guess they were.
Tyres can't be recycled-at least for now. It can be used for road patching.

Yes, they can and they are recycled across most of the world today. I am not sure where you get your "Tyres can't be recycled" gist from.

I have misplaced your number. I am a UK resident with a question or two. I am thinking of an Outlander 2004, Automatic, Petrol. What is your considered opinion here?
Thanks,

That is also not true in Nigeria because we have slippers made out of tires selling in some parts of Nigeria still.

Kobo, I remember those slippers. But that doesn't count as recycled, the rubber is still in the same state it was in its previous life as an automobile tyre. It hasn't undergone any process, bar cutting it into the shape of a sole, and adding straps. It still has the wire reinforcement in it too!

That's what recycling is. Reusing the old to make the new. You use old tires to make new slippers, create pavements or even cut them up for use on playgrounds and whatever else. The process is not the point the conversion or finding of new use for the old is what recycling is about. That is recycling.

I wonder what SON is doing. There are no Nigerian Standards anymore. Most consumer products don't live up to expectations. I bought a pair of Tiger battery with SON hologram and it didn't work because they were no life in it.
