This your question is very strange; So you think europeans brought IGBA NKWU TO US ? I dont expect someone like you to ask this kind of question. Yea,maybe the ashebi was a recent thing but there has always always been umu agbogho who escort the bride.
In Idenmili anum nwanyi has three stages; First is iche ego,second is ibu ego and the las is igbankwu.
Iche ego; This is when the groom approaches the chic and proposes.

Ibu ego; This includes the actual introduction and paying of dowry.

Igbankwu; This is the actual grand wedding where the joining of hands takes place and the brides father gives the bride a cup of wine to go look for her husband and feed him the wine while on her knees...lol. This segment is also called "wine carrying".

Igbankwu is a traditional Igbo wedding which was invented by the Nri; Ezeagu,whites didnt introduce Igbankwu!! Yes,it has been modernized to an extent but it originated from Igboland.

After the wedding proper come the "nduna uno" and the "idu uno"...I will explain more...feel sleepy.

Idu uno is when the bride is officially escorted to her new home, the husbands house. IMO, its the peak and highly emotional part of the whole marriage rites<<I'm teary eyed now>>
The bride is escorted by young ladies and married women from her village, all the gift items provided by her family and kinsmen on their heads(its mostly household utensils, the very feminine stuff(mortar, pots, ite ona, tripod stands etc) and her own personal items provided by her family and kinsmen (loads and loads of George wrappers, trinkets, head ties). Rich families send forth their daughters home with car gifts, landed properties.
Idu uno is when it finally dawns on the bride that she is actually leaving her family to go start her own home. Her mom, elder sisters, aunts and all related female kin starts the rite by praying, blessing and advising the bride. She's told what to expect, how to handle conflicts in her new home, how to relate with in laws and most especially to told to respect and honor her husband. The mom then embraces and bid her farewell. . .
Journey don begin oh, the spinsters take over. Like foot soldiers with the bride crying, ndi egwu by the side, the woman is led to her husbands house where the groom is by now, already waiting eagerly for his wife. The in laws and husbands relative would have also organised a wellcome party for the guests.
Wife is received, the grooms mom welcomes bride specially in same fashion as her mom ie prayers, blessings and advice.

Its a lovely culture and I absolutely love it!
