New pump price can’t be implemented – NBA

Written by Adelanwa Bamgboye Tuesday, 03 January 2012 05:00

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) yesterday said the association was still consulting on the next step to take over the sudden removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government, even as it said increment cannot be implemented.

NBA President Joseph Bodunrin Daudu (SAN) told Daily Trust on phone that the issue was no longer that of whether the removal of the fuel subsidy was illegal or not but how many people can afford the price.

He said lawyers in the country are not in support of the removal of fuel subsidy, adding that “the over 100 per cent increment placed on fuel pump price after the removal of the fuel subsidy by the Federal Government cannot be implemented.”

According to him, “only a very few people that are not up to .003 of the population can afford to buy petrol at the over 200 per cent increase in price. Government is adamant in the quest to remove this subsidy. The people are equally resolved in its opposition to the removal of subsidy.”

The NBA President said Nigeria is up for rough times ahead and that the time has come for a final determination whether those in Government derive their power from the people or whether they are independent and owe their stay in power to other entities other than the people.

“We foresee a victory and liberation for the people of Nigeria, while those pushing for deregulation in the present form will depart with more than a bloodied nose,” he said.

“Throughout the Obasanjo Administration and up to the close of the Yar’adua Administration subsidy did not exceed N300 billion. How it has now shot up to N1.3 trillion or thereabout without any corresponding increase in the supply of PMS remains a matter for serious inquiry,” he said.

I said it before , GEJ sold his soul for the Presidency! When people like Otedola now have more access to the President while some state governor are placed on queue,  then you know why we spend extra N1tn since He took over the reigns in Aso Rock.

Nothing shows the personal dishonesty and bias, ethnic and religious, of Nigerians more than this subsidy issue. When the NASS allow 'bow and go' confirmation, we are all up in arms. Yet, what are some Nigerians doing if not allowing GEJ to 'bow and go' when they support his blanket subsidy removal without insisting we get to the bottom of how N300 billion merited subsidy has to go because of a N1 trillion scam component common sense tells us  GEJ surely cannot be ignorant of ?

Even the Central Bank Governor openly admitted that the FG have no statistics on the actual number of liters consumed daily in this country and He openly questioned the N1.3tn figure claims by the FG, shows you there is something very fishy going on!

Even in the height of the US-Iran face off when international crude price was near $150pbb, we were still able to finance the subsidy under Yar'dua with N390bn, how come now that the prices have reduced, our subsidy has gone up by three folds

My brother, what is going on here is very obvious they spent frivolously and wastefully to actualise a very difficult project (election win for GEJ) considering the many rich and influential Nigerians they had to outspend and 'out-muscle'. They have virtually bankrupted Nigeria in the process with their scam. They depleted the ECA and generally spent Nigeria's money like it was going out of fashion. Now they want all traces of their irresponsibility, desperation and scamming destroyed.

Subsidy is , tops, circa N300 billion. Indeed, Femi Falana has told us that the NASS approved N240 billion yearly for subsidy. Under GEJ and in one year alone , i.e 2011, subsidy shot up to N1.4 billion. Almost 50% of the total , i.e N3.7 billion, that has been spent on subsidy in 5 years from 2006 to 2011.

Now , with a blanket removal designed to keep the incriminating bones buried, GEJ wants to destroy all traces of the corruption we are all sensible enough to know his Government cannot be ignorant of. This government is simply just very desperate to decieve Nigerians into going along with the burial of a pathetic and wicked scam that gulped over N1 trillion !!!!!

I don't support the harsh implementation of this subsidy removal, but it's amusing that the same person who had a mean stance when the Lekki inhabitants where crying foul about the irresponsible Lekki toll, is here trying to play the blame card . .

hercules07:

Let them pay the toll jare or go by public transport, how do they expect the government to survive if they do not pay the toll, a 120 Naira or 240 Naira toll per day equates 5K per month, if you have no business leaving your area do not, do not add to congestion on the roads abeg.
