Ifeanyi Ubah: Reaching Out With ‘Kero-Direct’

Ifeanyi Ubah, chairman and chief executive officer, Capital Oil and Gas Limited, a major player in the upstream sector of the nation’s oil industry, has recently been in the news for several good reasons.

Last two weeks, the Anambra State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), honoured him with the ‘NUJ Man of the Year, 2011’ award.

And last week, another feather was added to his cap, when he was bestowed with an honorary Doctorate Degree in Energy Solution Management by his alma mater, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

When the country experienced acute shortage of kerosene, and unprecedented increase in the price of the product, (the price of a litre of kerosene increased from N50 to N150), Ubah, announced the renewal of his partnership with the NNPC in the kero-direct scheme, which aims at ensuring that every nook and cranny of Nigeria gets kerosene at the approved pump price of N50 per litre.

Ubah who spoke with journalists recently said that with the coming of the yuletide, he had stepped up efforts to ensure the availability of the product, not only through the Kero-Direct partnership with the NNPC, but also through his yet to be launched Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation’. The product would be distributed mainly in his home state, Anambra, at the cost of N60 per litre.

Truck manager of Ubah’s Park in Amuwo Odofin in Lagos, Mr Martin Anyadike, told LEADERSHIP, that the company just took delivery of 1,200 new trucks to be used in the distribution of kerosene to various parts of Nigeria.

Anyadike confirmed that of the number, 200 of the trucks were meter trucks, which are capable of selling the product straight from the tankers, without first dispensing them to any filling station.

This he said would make it easy to access every part of Anambra State where the trucks will be used to service the ‘Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation’.

Meanwhile, the foundation has already started collecting names of unemployed graduates who will undertake a course in Chinese language. The successful graduates would later be sent on an entrepreneurship course in China, to learn courses that will equip them to manage companies which the foundation plans to set up for the youths.

Ubah said, “My aspiration and dream is to help the youths. The youths are the people who power my company, and I believe that there are a lot of them out there who are very intelligent and hardworking, but have not just had the opportunity to show what they have to offer. That is where Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation comes in.

“I am passionate about the youths in Nigeria, but I must start with Anambra because it is our primary constituency. We want to industrialise Anambra, and the money for this has already been set aside, but the youths are the ones that will power it. If we cannot get Anambra right, we may never get it right anywhere.

NNPC, Capital Oil Kero-direct Scheme creates 2,000 jobs

Mr Ifeanyi Ubah, the Managing Director of Capital Oil and Gas Ltd, has said that the second phase of the Kero-Direct Scheme (KDS) has generated an additional 2,000 direct employments for Nigerians.

Ubah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the second phase of the scheme had made the company to employ 765 youths.

According to him, an additional 1,035 persons are penciled down for employment before the completions of the distribution.

He said that the scheme which began in eight states was put together by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in partnership with Capital Oil and Gas to supply kerosene directly to households.

Ubah assured that middlemen would not hijack the scheme, adding that the sale would be restricted to 25 litres per household.

``Capital Oil has been very concerned about the difficulty facing Nigerians in getting kerosene for domestic use.

"It is in response to this that the company came up with this innovation of deploying mobile filling stations with standard dispensing pumps to sell kerosene at N50 per litre to Nigerians.

``The scheme will give our people access to the product with a view to reducing the use of charcoal and firewood, which are hazardous to health,'' Ubah said.

He lauded the initiative of Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, and the NNPC, for their intention to provide kerosene to end-users through truck dispensing.

Ubah said that the challenge of ending kerosene scarcity and ensuring uninterrupted supply would be handled through consistent investments in infrastructure.

The scheme, which began in Amuwo-Odofin and Apapa Local Government Areas of Lagos State in July has been extended to some other parts of the country.

Under the arrangement, the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company, a subsidiary of the NNPC provided the product for sale to consumers at N50 per litre, using Capital Oil's dispensing trucks
