A web developer should not call themselves an "engineer", no matter if they're working on the frontend or backend. Neither should mobile developers. The only people who can have such a title are those who actually build the technologies that the web developers and everybody uses. I.e. the language architects and engineers, people building browsers, operating systems, compilers, etc.

If we think in the physical world, construction workers aren't considered engineers when they assemble bridges. No. They follow the guidance of the engineers, just like developers follow the specs created by *real* engineers.

If you call yourself a "software engineer", but you're a web developer, I immediately assume you're a forking zbeba. I don't give a fork if you're programming in C# or Java. You're building CRUD applications. You're not an engineer.

The only people calling themselves "engineers" should be EE grads designing motherboards.

Mate, you may be right but it's not only used among Naija dev. Check the Indian Devs many such are used interchangeably.

But why do we need to worry about this? I would have that we rather vent our energy on real dev project, LLMs /ML in the African market.

We get too distracted with these titles and minor stuffs than we should command respect in African or World tech space.

Let's go back to work, brainstorm, synergize and build something competitive.

Lately I've found myself back to C, since I started doing backend now, it's being something I've always wanted to learn for my own personal sake.

DevOps, System Admin, Software engineer, Software developer, web developer, Wordpress developer, Backend developer, Frontend developer, Mobile developer and lots more other titles all overlaps in tasks being done depending on the company, country, etc

Sha, I believe say some kind countries go get law about the use of "engineer" title. But na if the client press charge before that law go invoke itself

I personally have never introduced myself as an engineer and really don't care about any title.

LOL your own case is different bro. You're a qualified engineer (COREN I guess), so using the title even if you're a carpenter is permitted, you earned it in another profession.

At least I know doctors who code, they're still doctors. But I agree with the OP, just because you can code or you work in tech doesn't make you an engineer. The title should be reserved for people with engineering qualifications.
