Red Bull ‘letterbox’ slot for driver cooling

Adrian Newey has cleared up the mystery about the ‘letterbox’ opening in the nose of the newly-launched 2012 Red Bull car. The F1 world noticed that Newey’s ‘step nose’ differs from its rivals in the form of an air inlet where the monocoque height meets the new lower nose height. Some surmised it must be for KERS or engine cooling, or perhaps even an F-duct style channel through to the diffuser.

Designer Newey, however, said it is to just cool the drivers.

“The toes are a bit too cold now actually,” grinned Mark Webber to Italy’s Autosprint. “Traditionally the driver cooling slot is at the front of the nose,” explained Newey, “but really for styling as much as anything we moved it to where you now see it to break up the aesthetics of the ramp.”

A sneak preview!!!

The more the new cars a launch the more a fear for McLaren and their slant nose

Mercedes with F-duct nose?

Despite running their 2011 car in the first pre-season test in Jerez this week, Mercedes have tried out a new front wing. The result is positive…

On the second day of testing, Michael Schumacher set the fastest time of all, and though the very first pre-season tests never are considered to be benchmarks, the times were very quick and raised a few eyebrows. Yesterday, Nico Rosberg took the Mercedes W02 out for a spin and as a result set the fastest time on day three.

So what is it? Well, in 2011 Mercedes worked on a front nose which had an air-intake in the front of the nose, a small grill was visible. But the 2012 nose being tested these days, are a form of F-duct. Without really being a F-duct…

Air travels into the hole in the front and are then channeled onto the front wing, creating larger downforce, more grip and eventually faster cornering speed.

Martin Whitmarsh, team principal of McLaren-Mercedes, estimates the benefit of the system to be around 5 to 8 kilometres per hour. “For the front wing, there are no F-duct rules,” said a report in Auto Motor und Sport.

Dude, your blog is more about gossip and bits, but most here will want to know about high tech stuff. You need to talk about octane ratings, J-mass dampers, mercury suspension systems etc. That sort of thing, gossip will not work the technology buffs.

Nice one still.

The World Champ thinks McLaren might be the fastest car, so they might not have made a mistake with their nose design afterall. However, the season start is still some way away:

F1: No 'step' on new Marussia car's nose
Global Motorsport Media press release
Added: 24/02/2012 06:10

Feb.24 (GMM) Marussia's new car for 2012 does not feature a 'step' on its front nose.

Every team on the 2012 grid, including HRT who are yet to release their 2012 car, responded to the FIA's new height regulations by designing an awkward 'step' between the monocoque and the tip of the nose.

The one exception, until now, was McLaren.

But Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports that the 2012 Marussia, which will be seen for the first time in Barcelona next week, also has a clean aerodynamic line at the front.

The former Virgin team works closely with McLaren, including using the famous British team's test rigs and wind tunnel.

"In fact, there was little difference in theory between the two solutions. So why take risks with something that we do not know?" a Marussia team source is quoted as saying.

Timo Glock has already driven the new step-less Marussia in the McLaren simulator.

"We don't have too much experience with the simulator so we hope that it's right, but we will not be too optimistic -- that's not to say that I'm disappointed," said the German driver.

"I think we have a good base to build upon," added Glock.

"We have been focusing for a long time on finding the errors with the previous car and getting over them," he is quoted by Speed Week magazine.

I searched for that. Where did you find it at the time?

"The Renault engine gives us hope. We have three new technical people - one is our technical director, one is chief of aero and one is running the cars. They have different backgrounds coming from three different teams. There's still a problem, it's called Adrian Newey. There's only one of him."

as usual, here i am again to show my allegiance to Alonso and Ferrari. . . . . . . . . but sadly this year i will FIRST bank on the ICE MAN and his lotus of a ride, and hope that he doesnt make a mockery of his "clean" F1 racing record. it's only about 1 hr before the first practice of the season, so we will all get the true picture of all this year true potential.

as for all my fellow NL F1 aficionados (you know who y'all are), LET THE RACES and the biatching BEGIN!!!!!!! lol
