The January 2012 report of Webometrics, a world tertiary education ranking institutions organisation, has shown that only three institutions in Nigeria made the list of first 100 best universities in Africa and none in the first 1,600 in the world.

The University of Benin ranked 1,639th on the global scale, the 18th in Africa and the first in Nigeria, followed by the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State as the second in Nigeria and the 2,266th in the world. It however did not show on the first 100 list in Africa.

The University of Ibadan, the third in the African first 100, was the 2,515th in the world and 53rd in Africa, while the University of Nigeria, Nsukka is 3,228th, Obafemi Awolowo University-3,263rd and the University of Lagos- 3,486th, were the fourth fifth and sixth, respectively, in Nigeria.

Others were the Ahmadu Bello University, University of Ilorin-4,302nd, University of Jos 5,681st, Auchi Polytechnic- 254th and the National Open University of Nigeria- 6,576th, which came seventh, eighth, nineth, 10th and 11th, respectively on the African list.

The Auchi Polytechnic, being the 24th in Africa retained its position as the best polytechnic in Nigeria.

Topping the world list were the Havard University, which maintained its first position followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of Michigan and the University of California, Berkeley that came second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The University of Cape Town dropped to second position in Africa.

The report showed a significant drop in the quality of Nigeria’s tertiary education compared to the previous rankings.

For instance, in the 2011 report, eight institutions in Nigeria made the African best 100 list. They included University of Ilorin (20th), University of Jos (42nd), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (54th), University of Lagos (58th), Obafemi Awolowo University (63rd), Ahmadu Bello University (69th), National Open University of Nigeria (86th) and the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (95th).

The first five in Africa were the Mauritius Institute of Education, Mauritius (387th in the world), University of Cape Town, South Africa (532th), Rhodes University, South Africa (573rd), Cairo University, Egypt (687th) and the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa (819th).

In a related development, a report from 24/7 Wall St has listed the United States, Japan, Canada, Norway, Finland, United Kingdom, South Korea, New Zealand, Israel and Australia as countries with the most educated people.

According to the journal, the countries that invest the most in education have the most educated people.

@Sheyguy

Mehhnn this means the ranking kinda favors Nigerian Unis o shocked The ones I saw that was based on more important criteria was far worse. While US schools like MIT( cool) and Harvard topped the list, our Naija Unis dey far FAr FAR behind, even below 5000th (as of the last time I saw it).

this is stale old news. Do u expect nigerian univ to rank among the world top 1000 when our country's economy has not ranked beter? Our schools are a product of our economy!
Nigerian univs produce graduate that can work efectively in the nigerian society, they shuld go to hell with their stats! They cant compete wit havard and mit b'cos our country cant compete wit theirs! A havard graduate wil find it hard to work in nigeria *okonjo* while a uniben graduate wil do just fine *fashiola*
the civil service, banks, telecoms, force, aviation, schools etc are filled with workers mostly from ngr univ, and they're doing just fine *at least*

Just like it is commonly done in Nigeria. We are not being fair to ourselves as a Nation if we continue misleading with publications like this; the ranking has got little or nothing to do with quality of education.
We are always quick to condemn the government but we do nothing to condemn acts like this that sends wrong message to our psyche.

why are people still surprised that our quality of education is rubbish, our education system only destroy the life of our youths make them job seekers rather than employers, professors in universities are supposed to be discovering new knowledge to students not repeating existing knowledge e.g what is being lectured 10 yrs ago in our universities is still what is obtainable 2day, nobody is blaming GEJ cus i know his loyalists are beginning to think otherwise, the military guys brought nija to where it is 2day, the contents of our education system is outdated, our regular Msc, Bsc, Hnd etc are outdated everyone must go out to discover new and relevant knowledge for his/herself.

is it not true?? i went to a university and will tell you that its demoralising watching the attitude of most of those lecturers whom mostly are not even competent not to even mention the sadistic ones sad

This is a webometrics ranking and not academic ranking. It only rate the the schools web presence and not the quality of teaching. Regardless, Nigerian education is not as bad as Nigerians portray it. If not, why do most universities abroad still allow or BSc holders to do a MSc or PHd with their degrees?
Re: Nigerian Varsities Fail To Make Top 1,600 by Arosa(m): 11:33am On Feb 06, 2012
The only way for Nigerian universities to catch up their western counterparts is through funding. Here is how Manchester University do it. http://www.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/funding/
Quote
The University of Manchester invested over £6.8m to support postgraduate research students in 2009/10. In addition to these internal funds, a substantial amount of funding was also generated from research councils, industry and other external sources. In research council funding alone, the University receives an average of £20 million per year to support its postgraduate taught and research degree students across a variety of disciplines.

I don't see why big companies in Nigeria can't not help in funding our universities, Rich people across the country can also raise funds for our schools. But no! they would rather spend their monies abroad on their kids school fees and what not.

they wont give u a job with ur naija Bsc but they will give u admission for Msc or Phd not because of the quality of your education but because you are paying for it, check ur yahoo mail, you will always see online masters of liverpool university, the schools only want to make more money.

Nigerian Universities Fail To Make It to top 1,600, where they expected to before?, the standard of education in Nigeria is below zero

Nigerians needs to do away with this useless rating, it does not good to us. We need to address funding our education system to improve efficiency and creativity among the young ones.

Im not even talking of online masters like university of Liverpool( a low ranking uni in the UK) but a full time residential study. U wl need to go through their education to appreciate their job assesement which most intl students (not just Nigerians) fail because we are in different climes. Many Nigerians secure good jobs after the MSc and Phd in addition to their BSc from Nigeria.

Why should they? Theyre absolute rubbish! the nonsense taught at those schools im still suprised students scramble for appauling education!

The one thing nigeria could have maintained in high standards they refuse! kmt

Students now leaving nigeria to go ghana to study its absolutely disgraceful.

Meanwhile the children of the commisioner of education is paying thousands of pounds to attend university in England.

Maybe if they lobbied all public servants MUST use public services this will change!
