Well I am not sure if you reside in Nigeria and what sector you worked in. Based on first hand experience I can tell you that anybody can work in the bank at entry level ( Management training ) at that level what is required of you iare basically what you learnt in training school for those banks that have training and the rest are on job training. The core banking activities are usually carried out by those that are experienced, in addition the new entrant are required to have their professional qualification over time and with years of experience can then take up some core positions.

In general even in western world you don't necessary need a degree in banking or related subject for you to work in a bank. I have a lot of friends in the state with degrees in engineering who are working in the bank, just that with time they are required to obtain their certification. Mind you, banking is not rocket science if you can do a little research you would realize that way back you don't need a university degree to work in the bank.

Like someone said, stop displaying your ignorance. Banking may be a ''professional thing' as you call it but it isnt specialist. In most professions you can train and learn on the job. Ever head of apprenticeships? but with doctor, pharmacist, law (you do not need to study law to be a solicitor), architecture and certain engineering jobs you need to be specialy trained in those fields. Majority of people that work in Investment banking in the UK did not study banking & finance (I dont even think such a course exists at undergraduate level in the UK) and majority of those in retail banking (90% of banking in Nigeria is retail banking) dont even have a degree.

Young man, please I suggest you choose your language carefully, if you want to learn read and listen, don't let your emotions take charge. I guess you guys are still young and probably still in school. I have worked in Naija before leaving, even in Europe it is still obtainable go to the banking sector you will find a lot of people with science degree at PhD level working in the banking sector. Well you failed to understand that banking as an organisation has different departments like; Finance, Trade, HR, Procurement, Legal, Treasury, Treasury Operations, IT, customer care, loan etc. Based on the above are you telling me that people with other qualification has nothing to do with banking?

Well your little task should be you looking up the other units that make up a bank find out what exactly they do and am sure with such information at your tip you would rather thank me for educating you than insulting your senior.

It is amazing how we easily derail a thread from the very serious and solemn issue of death to that of Nigeria being a failed state and Engineers working in Banks, etc etc.

Let me say without mincing words that with a first degree in any field, you are positioned to work at the entry level of a bank. If you aspire to go higher, you will then need to learn on the job and acquire some certifications. I trained as a lawyer and spent 2 years working in the Legal Department of a foremost bank. While there, a few other colleagues (lawyers) veered into corporate finance and they excelled. As i speak, i have left banking but have upscalled my skills to enable me take up challenges in various other spheres of life. My point?, it is not a Nigerian factor nor is it perculiar to Nigeria for skills to be applied across board. Secondly, I have held down 4 different jobs and i did not know a single person in any of those establishments, i simply applied, got interviewed and got offers which i accepted. It is so very easy to sit on a certain high horse and be castigating everything Nigerian, we know we are not doing well, it is more a case of the powerful minority downplaying the good intentions of the weak majority. And BTW, where i currently work, the Chief Financial Officer had a first degree in a physics related programme before he veered off into Accounting and Finance having worked over time with Deloitte. One of my core directors is heading a private equity firm recognized world-wide and his first degree was in, guess? MBBCH (or whatever acronym they use for medical doctors)(essentially he started off as a medical doctor with the then Authur Anderson but working in tax, etc etc). 1. microbiologists are also qualified for the job cuz usually their requirement is usually a 1st degree in any field
2. there exists the term ''career change'', she might be a chartered accountant u know!
3. such jobs can actually be done by anybody and thats why they keep there options open to everyone
4. you cant possibly know better than the employer and i dont think any employer keeps an incompetent employee. since the employer aint complaining, pls stop the whining

Mr. am really not going to exchange words with you coz you really do not know how old I am and am sure what I have achieved with the few years I have stayed on earth you may not achieve in 50 years to come. Please like I mentioned earlier if you read my post very well you would see that even after you insulted me I kept my cool and for the record in few years to come by the grace of God you shall graduate, get a job of your dream and see what life is all about. Then you would look back and remember this conversation and the sad thing about it is you can not tender your apologies. Unfortunately, ur theory is overshadowing the essence of this thread. Be that as it may, Banking job is not such an academical- professionally -based job. Most candidates are selected based on their brilliance and ability to follow up, that is to say, there is a designed modality of on-the job training which i suppose at present, Human capital development considers the most effective form of training. This is the reason u see banks Management trainees. One can ready banking and finance without doing well in the banking sector because as it is even Nigerian tertiary institution and her curriculum does not give up to 40% of the required practical IQ to perform office jobs.
