The mother of an eight year old boy and a four year old girl is currently in jail after being arrested for criminal mistreatment after her boyfriend allegedly beat the children in what police are calling the most “gruesome” child abuse case they’ve seen.

Ashly Eli, 23, is in the Kittitas County Jail along with her boyfriend, Reuben Mulamba, 27, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting the children at his Anchor M apartments in Ellensburg. The abuse to the children was so severe, they had to be rushed to the hospital.

Police believe the children were hit with cords, and allege that pliers were used on their bodies, Kiro TV reported. The children had old wounds, some infected for lack of treatment, that police believe show a pattern of abuse.

The four year old daughter is currently in critical condition. She is suffering from kidney failure and internal bleeding. The eight year old son is in stable condition, however both children have bruises and lacerations. Investigators say that Eli told them Mulamba beat the children up to 20 times all over their bodies with a belt, pinched them with pliers, and hit them with an electrical cord and wood. Police say she didn’t take them for medical treatment because she was afraid the police and child services would get involved.

Mulamba is facing two counts of second-degree child assault and is being held on $1 million bail. Eli is facing two counts of second-degree criminal mistreatment, and is being held on $750,000 bail. Their arraignment hearings are scheduled for February 13.
