Anti-bomb cop dies in Kaduna twin bomb explosions
On February 15, 2012 · In News Tweet
By Luka Binniyat
KADUNA – A twin bomb blast tore through Kaduna yesterday, killing a policeman and injured a Senior Special Adviser to the governor, Col. Dangana Maman (rtd). The first one went off at Ungwar Sarki Market, Kaduna North Local Government of Kaduna State at about 11:30am yesterday. Ten minutes later, another blast occurred about 500m away, under a busy overhead pedestrian bridge instantly killing a policeman, Sergeant Sunday Badang, an anti- bomb specialist who was trying to defuse the bomb.

The first explosion took place opposite the Kaduna state Transport Authority, KSTA, park, while the second explosion occurred at Sultan Bello road still in same Ungwar Sarki.

Late Badang sources said, was killed while using a bomb scanner to ascertain an object suspected to be a bomb allegedly dumped by Boko Haram sect in the area, which was near the Sultan Bello Mosque – an imposing structure revered by Kaduna Muslims as their central Mosque.
Announcing the death of Badang, the state Police Commissioner, Mr Nasarawa said, “Today (yesterday)  at about 10. 40am  and 10.45am respectively, there were two explosions that occurred at Ungwar Sarki Bus Stop Kaduna.

“The first Improvised Explosive Device, IED, exploded in a gutter near a parked 15-seater bus. No one was affected but as the second explosion occurred, a police anti bomb personnel, Sgt Sunday Badang, was about to defuse it and the IED exploded and he was killed instantly.

“The fragment (of the IED) affected two other persons near the scene. They were rushed to 44 Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna, for treatment and the victims are in stable condition. The area was equally swept by the police anti-bomb squad and no other explosive device was detected. Equally we have beefed up security in the entire state and members of the public are advised to report any suspicious object to security agencies and to avail us with credible information that will nip in the bud, these criminalities.”

Meanwhile, soldiers and policemen had a hectic time in trying to control a large crowd of curious people under the bridge just as most banks in the Kaduna metropolis closed abruptly to customers at 2 p.m. following the two bomb blasts that occurred in the city.

Eye witnesses told  Vanguards at the scene of the explosion that shortly after the first bomb exploded, another polythene bag containing some objects was discovered under the bridge.

One of the eye witnesses, Mallam Sani Ali said: “After the first explosion, policemen and soldiers were attracted to a polythene bag kept under this bridge. Those who saw the first explosion at the market side said it came from a similar bag.

“The deceased policeman asked the soldiers to leave the place to enable him scan the polythene bag but as he placed his instrument on the bag, it exploded and killed him, prompting  people to run  away.”

The body of the policeman was still lying on the main road with more than half of his body parts scattered all around the places, as at the time Vanguard visit there, even as schools, banks and shops were being closed in the area.

About three weeks ago, multiple explosions hit one at an Army formations in which the lone bomber was killed in his explosive laden vehicle.
Meanwhile, some bank customers told NAN that the the closure of the banks would affect their businesses.
’’We cannot carry or leave large sum in our shops.’’
Mr Emeka Agu, a trader, expressed disappointment at the development, saying that the blasts did not take place near commercial or business areas.

Banks along Yakubu Gowon Way, Ahmadu Bello road and Bank road among other business areas, stopped attending to customers at 2 p.m.

Mr Beji Auta, a security man at the First Bank, noted that the bank stopped rendering services for undisclosed reasons, but guessed that it was intended to ensure safety of customers’ deposits

Valid question.

What is happening to the security budgets?

Two groups killed that policeman;

1. Boko-haram
2. The  Corrupt Nigerian Government

It's sad that it happened this way, but there's absolutely no excuse for it to happen again.

The authorities that were not pro-active enough in the face of growing bomb threats now need to react by giving proper training and equipment to bomb disposal units.

What this police officer did was very heroic. He saved the lifes of the soldiers and other people around. If I were Jonathan I'd immortalise him, this will strengthen the country's resolve against the Boko Haramists

They are about to get the true definition of cultural shock! My heart goes out to them, may God see them through the dark days. He was a hero, a martyr.

OK. If he had been trained and accorded the proper gears to deal with this situation it might have been a different outcome. For that I blame our corrupt government. Somebody has made away with the funds that should help with this type of problem.

I blame boko-haram for obvious reasons, nobody has the right to take another life regardless of their political or religious nonsense.

However I still get your point, dont know why he had touch talk less of looking inside.

Indeed my brother. Not one to speak ill of the dead but I must say his action was extremely reckless. What happened to sending in one of these considering we have been under bombing seige for a while now?

No money to buy bomb detonation robots? Surprise, surprise considering that corruption and Government largesse is now at an all time high. Nothing typifies this more than what is being spent, a vast increase on last year, to buy vehicles for  Senators. Nigerians should read what is written below to understand that this was a man sent to his death by a Nation with the most cruel folks , with totally wrong priorities, as leaders.

As Absolute Poverty Doubles, Senators To Receive Cars Costing $100k Each

This poor kid does not have a dollar to his name.

Yet Nigerian Senators demand Toyota Landcruiser 2011 model at $100,000 each !!!
By SaharaReporters, New York

Six weeks after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a hike in the price of petrol which led to mass rallies of Nigerians at home and abroad, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has made it official: poverty in Nigeria has doubled over the past decade.

Over 100 million Nigerian were living in "absolute poverty"— less than a $1 a day—in 2010, the NBS said in a new report.  That doubles the 1996 figure of 67.1 Nigerians in that category.  The figure was 68.7 in 2004, when President Obasanjo famously declared that he knew no poor people of that description in Nigeria.

The news comes six weeks ahead of a report that the cost of electricity in the country will almost double next April before the privatization of 18 state-run power generation, distribution and transmission companies that is supposed to make power available and affordable.

The harder times to come are in the face of greater luxury living for Nigeria’s political elite as Nigerians learned, over the weekend, that their 109 Senators will this week start to receive expensive new Toyota Land Cruiser sport utility vehicles (SUVs) purchased by the National Assembly at a cost of over N16million each.  The Senators will spend over N1.7 billion on the item before shipping, taxes and insurance, and the cars will add to other choice toys in the Senatorial fleets.

In a report yesterday, The Nation on Sunday said it was told that the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) handled the purchase of the vehicles directly, without the use of a contractor, opting to buy directly from the manufacturer “to reduce cost.”

The vehicles will arrive just in time to consolidate the high profile lifestyle of the Senators, the furnishing of whose offices also commences this week.  The NASC, unwilling to be troubled with the “minor” local business of supplying refrigerators, computers and other office equipment, contracted it to some lucky outside contractors.

While the Senators settle back into the comfort of their $100,724 brand new Land Cruisers so they do not have to worry about suffering discomfort on Nigeria’s horrendous roads, ordinary Nigerians will have to prepare to dig deeper if they wish to enjoy electricity.

According to the report in the Financial Times, the new pricing structure for electricity will see price tariffs rise of 25-88 per cent, but most customer classes will see a 50 per cent increase in their bills, and the return of the s-word, “subsidy.”

“We are making sure that the urban poor and rural dwellers be provided a subsidy so that they don’t see a significant increase in tariff, Professor Bart Nnaji, the Minister of Power, told the newspaper in Abuja. “The rest should be able to pay for it.”

The government’s strategy, said the newspaper, is that cushioning the blow for the poorest consumers – a policy said to be absent during the fuel subsidy removal – will ensure that there is no repeat of January’s mass rallies against the abrupt hike in the price of fuel.

This means that the government will structure the electricity tariffs to try to bribe the poorest people to take no interest in any further mass protests.  It is a gamble that is unlikely to work because imbalances in the Nigerian economy suggest that whatever the ordinary people may benefit from so-called “subsidized” electricity they are certain to lose in other areas, such as higher food and transportation costs.

The government calculates, for instance, that the biggest consumers of electricity, wealthy individuals and businesses, will pay the highest rates for electricity.  While this is in principle aimed at “cross-subsidizing the less well-off,” there is nothing in the character of the government to suggest that those businesses and individuals will not manipulate the system to their own benefit, or pass their burdens to consumers in terms of highest prices.

Under the arrangement, the government will provide N60bn subsidy this year, and the tariff for the poorest customers will be fixed at N3.3.

“The calculus continues to avoid the obvious: corruption in Nigeria,” said an analyst in Abuja today.  “As long as the government and its highest officials and friends refuse to renounce corruption, this is all simply a dance around the camp fire, and anyone who is not close to the fire will enjoy no warmth.”

Said another analyst, “So, the government will pay N60 billion in electricity subsidies this year.  The question now is, who will the new electricity cabal be, and how much more will the government pay next year, and in the year just before the next big election?”

The NBS predicts in its report that the trend towards absolute poverty in Nigeria will continue.  Absolute poverty is measured by the number of people who can afford only the bare essentials of shelter, food and clothing.

Nigeria's population in poverty
•    1980: 17.1 million
•    1985: 34.7 million
•    1992: 39.2 million
•    1996: 67.1 million
•    2004: 68.7 million
•    2010: 112.47 million

Horrible!!!

The policeman had the chance to cheat death but acted very stupidly. I noticed that the metal detector in his hand made a beeping sound thats when he should have run away immediately that way he should have survived but he was trying to dismantle a suspected bomb without any form of protective clothing very stupid.

I suspect that the man that filmed this video, was the same person that detonated the bomb. Notice the way the camera shifted upward b4 the explosion, so that he could detonated the bomb this is so sad. death to boko haram!!!

I do not believe that is gallantry

There is a yoruba sayings in 2 sentences:
1. "Moja mosa, l'an mo Akinkanju l'ogun" meaning a warrior is identified by his attack & retreat skills
2. "Akinkanju to m'oja ti o m'osa, ma nba ogun lo ni" meaning a warrior who knows how to attack but not how to retreat will loose his life

That I see as stupidity on his part. It's pathetic and felt for his family

I'm sure you are not in Naija.  If you are, you would have known that this method is being used to detonate bomb.  How will the Sgt refuse to carry out lawful instruction.  Where did you get the training that AK47 is the best method to detonate bomb?

Anyway, we all in NL have seen that a robot could be used to detonate a bomb.  Let us cry to Nigerian Authority to provide these robots and other equipment for the NPF in view of the prevailing situation.

May God provide, keep and sustain those the Sergeant left behind.  Amen!
