Stop explaining the problems, change it - Atiku tells Tinubu by etokhana(op): 9:33pm On Jul 31
Former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed President Bola Tinubu’s recent assertion that Nigeria’s prosperity is on the horizon and that the quality of life is improving. Atiku described the remarks as disconnected from the realities confronting millions of Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku questioned whether the President was referring to a different country, insisting that the prevailing economic and security conditions paint a starkly different picture.

According to the former Vice President, ordinary Nigerians continue to grapple with soaring inflation, rising living costs, unemployment, insecurity and shrinking purchasing power, making claims of improving prosperity difficult to reconcile with daily realities.

He argued that market traders had seen their businesses weakened by inflation, civil servants’ salaries no longer lasted through the month, manufacturers were struggling with high energy costs, while unemployed graduates faced uncertain futures.

Atiku also pointed to worsening insecurity, saying farming communities had been displaced by terrorists and bandits, while kidnappings and violent attacks continued to leave many families living in fear.

While acknowledging that the Tinubu administration inherited significant economic and security challenges, Atiku maintained that the President was elected to address those problems rather than continue attributing them to previous administrations.

“The Constitution did not swear President Tinubu into office to explain history. It swore him into office to change it,” he said, arguing that after more than three years in office, the government could no longer rely on blaming its predecessors for current challenges.

He further accused the administration of presiding over unprecedented economic hardship, fiscal recklessness and a lack of transparency, alleging that millions of Nigerians had been pushed deeper into poverty while a privileged few benefited from government policies.

Atiku also criticised President Tinubu’s comments on Nigeria’s growing population, saying countries such as China achieved economic success by investing in manufacturing, infrastructure, education, technology and export-led industrialisation rather than treating population growth as a burden.

He said an ADC-led administration would focus on investing in manufacturing, agriculture, modern infrastructure, quality education, skills development and export-oriented industries to harness Nigeria’s youthful population as an economic advantage.

According to him, Nigerians were not responsible for the country’s current predicament, insisting that poor leadership was the major challenge.

The former Vice President also described as insensitive any suggestion that Nigerians should accept present hardship because previous generations experienced hunger.

He argued that citizens elected the current administration to tackle today’s economic realities, not to justify them by referencing historical challenges.

Atiku maintained that hope could not be sustained through speeches alone but must be backed by policies that deliver affordable food, reliable electricity, employment opportunities, quality education, accessible healthcare and improved security.

One day he’ll say he handed over power to himself

Day after that he’ll be telling us that his plan to fix insecurity is for us to know that an animal was sacrificed in place of a child.

Hahaha, president Tinubu is not explaining to you Atiku or any of the opposition but to Nigerians so that they can know where we are coming from , where we are and where we are heading to

Even when it comes to campaigning, we have stopped wasting our time with the woods supporters, those who are fixated with their arguments . We now focus on the real neutral Nigerians who need enlightenment about the achievements of this government

Bad workman always quarrel with his tools. That was how Buhari kept on blaming PDP right from 2015 till he wasted 8 good years and achieved hardship and insecurity, now Tinubu has started complaining and giving excuses upon excuses thereby achieving hardship pro max and insecurity pro max in his first tenure.

Why would the man who resisted northern pressure to make Obasanjo a one term president like Mandela in 2003 be disgruntled? Was that not the year Buhari first asked for the job of president and failed but locked down northern votes nonetheless?

Do you think that he is disgruntled because Obasanjo has been witch-hunting him for standing with the constitution in 2007 against his 3rd term agenda?

What else could make him disgruntled in your view huh

According to sources available to us that time, Obasanjo said he will do a single term but after that, he decided to go for second term. I was physically present at Rivers state Governor’s Lodge when the heat became too much and Obasanjo in the presence of all of us knelt down in front of Atiku begging him to allow him do a second term. I think that was how Atiku missed the opportunity by agreeing to Obasanjo’s plea. His thought was that at least, if Obasanjo completes his second term, he will hand over to him but you all know the story of Third Term Agenda and that was how they fell apart. Atiku had the best opportunity to become president in 2003 and lost it. He had the support of PDP governors then.

Around November 2002, 15 of the 21 Governors from the PDP including me, had an ad hoc meeting at my lodge in Abuja to decide who should be nominated by the Governors Committee for election by PDP as the presidential nominee for the 2003 Election.

The Governors Committee decided almost unanimously to get a new candidate instead of President Obasanjo as the Committee was of the view that because of his military background, he was intolerant of dissent and had displayed very dictatorial and vindictive tendencies against those he perceived to be independent-minded and disloyal to him.

Immediately after the Governors meeting, I led the delegation of Governors to meet the then PDP Chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh, at his residence around 2 am.

As the leader of the delegation, I spoke and communicated the views of the Governors to the Chairman, which was that the Governors had decided not to support President Obasanjo as PDPs nominee for the 2003 General Election.

The party chairman tried to persuade us to review our decision but when he saw our resolve, he told us that he would inform the President. I was later informed by Chief Audu Ogbeh that after we left his house he put an urgent call to the President and informed him of our decision.

What then followed were intense consultations before the PDP annual convention which took place in January 2003. Two days before the party convention, the Governors had a breakfast meeting with President Obasanjo.

I recall that at that meeting, the then Vice President Alhaji Abubakar Atiku told the President in the presence of the Governors that he was known to be very dictatorial, vindictive and unforgiving. The President appealed to the Governors to support him and assured both the Governors and the party leadership that if he was allowed to continue for the second term, he would adopt a more democratic approach.

On the basis of the President's assurance, given at that breakfast meeting, I led the move for the Governors to support his presidential nomination for the second term. However, notwithstanding my support for President Obasanjo's nomination for a second term, the President after the nomination, acted very shabbily towards me.

When I met him soon after the convention, he told me that he had learned that I had put forward the view that he was unsellable, unmarketable and unelectable. He then vowed that he was going to make sure that I was unsellable, unmarketable and unelectable.

According to Adesanya, Atiku met the governors the first day of the convention; they urged him to leave Obasanjo and seek the nomination himself. Atiku demurred; he also deflected the suggestion that he join Ekwueme. Finally, Atiku arranged a meeting between Obasanjo and the now irate governors. The governors railed that Obasanjo was hypocritically pursuing them for corruption, while turning a blind eye to corrupt politicians within his own Administration. Atiku supported the governor's position, telling Obasanjo that significant corruption was not the exclusive ambit of the governors and that serious transgressions occurred in the executive branch: he said it would be unjust to focus exclusively on gubernatorial excesses. Assuming the role of mediator, Atiku then asked both sides to affirm their mutual support and cease the antagonism being fueled by elements that wanted to destroy the PDP. The governors agreed to bury the hatchet, if Obasanjo would shelve the dossiers. Having demonstrated his influence with the governors, Atiku continued to play coy with Obasanjo.

In the end, Atiku extracted an extraordinary concession from the President. Obasanjo agreed to relinquish the entire domestic agenda to Atiku, including the appointment of key economic policy-makers. Since Obasanjo focused on the world arena during his first term and aspired for recognition as an international statesman, Atiku said that is where he would like Obasanjo's attentions to remain. Obasanjo would serve the role of a "super Foreign Minister" and ceremonial Head of State. As Adesanya understood the agreement, Atiku would be allowed to direct domestic economic policy while Obasanjo busied himself with debt relief, NEPAD, conflict resolution and other measures to shore up Nigeria's image abroad.

OBJ camp - visit Wikileaks and type the following in the search bar NIGERIA: DIFFERENT INSIDER VIEWS ON THE PDP CONVENTION

The President was dazed, Abayomi recalled. Jarred by the unexpected possibility of defeat, the usually know-it-all Obasanjo eagerly solicited counsel on how to escape the closing vise. Early that day, the dominant theme was to seek a court injunction postponing the convention. Proponents suggested the delay to afford Obasanjo time to marshal support and undermine Ekwueme's momentum. However, this idea was ultimately discarded, partially because of apprehension over the public's reaction. More importantly, the push for an injunction became less urgent when the President's advisors began to sense their man was regaining ground by the hour.

The President owed much of his recovery to his own tenacity and, at times, shamelessness. He pulled out virtually all the stops to clinch the nomination, according to Abayomi. For most of that day, the President's diet consisted of liberal portions of humble pie. The President pleaded and cajoled; on at least two occasions his eyes welled with emotion as he pursued fence-sitting delegates and governors. However, Obasanjo saved his best to keep Vice President Atiku from defecting.

With rumor swirling that Atiku would opt to run with Ekwueme, Obasanjo wasted no time visiting the Vice President's residence. Obasanjo begged, declaring he would not leave Atiku's home unless the Vice President accompanied him to win back the delegates and governors. The performance had the desired effect. Atiku joined Obasanjo in publicly lobbying the conventioneers. While it might not have been Obasanjo's finest hour it was the defining moment of the convention. What had been a suspenseful contest would now turn into a rout.

That is absolutely correct.
If the present continues to yo blame the past for all things after so long in office, then the future will blames the present and on and on.

Meaning that we are doomed to have governments come and go without fundamental change. Little wonder voter apathy continues to spread and deepen when they cannot relate their civic responsibilities with their social experiences.

So will the citizenry come together to break this vicious cycle and deliver hard, high pressure advocacy for good governance.....or continue to pander to excuses and stagnate and stink like a swamp.

MY DEAR ATIKU, TINUBU IS NOT MERELY EXPLAINING THE PROBLEM—HE IS CHANGING THE SYSTEM. BY CharlesCNG.

Atiku Abubakar says President Tinubu should “stop explaining the problems and change them.”

But that accusation collapses when placed beside the reforms already being implemented.

Tinubu removed an unsustainable petrol subsidy, dismantled the multiple exchange-rate system, reduced monetary financing of government deficits, introduced comprehensive tax reforms and substantially increased revenue flowing to states and local governments.

These are not explanations. They are difficult policy actions.

The results are emerging. The IMF projects 4.1% economic growth in 2026, compared with 4% in 2025, while the World Bank says reforms since 2023 have helped stabilise the economy. The World Bank also reports that the fiscal deficit fell to about 3.1% of GDP in 2025, the debt-to-GDP ratio declined for the first time in a decade, and inflation had fallen from roughly 33% in late 2024 to about 15% by February 2026.

Tinubu has also introduced student loans, decentralised electricity regulation to the states, pursued local-government financial autonomy, expanded infrastructure projects and increased fiscal resources available to subnational governments.

President Tinubu has also begun a major restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture. He is backing constitutionally regulated state police, strengthening and expanding forest guards, and has approved the Nigerian Army’s expansion from eight to 12 divisions, alongside the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel to improve border security and response times.

Has prosperity reached every household? No.

Food, transport, electricity and borrowing costs remain painful. Poverty is still severe, insecurity remains unacceptable, and the government must accelerate agricultural production, social protection, power supply and support for small businesses. Even international institutions praising the reforms warn that their benefits have not reached enough Nigerians.

But Atiku’s statement is mostly a catalogue of problems Nigerians already know.

He says an ADC government will invest in agriculture, manufacturing, education, infrastructure and exports. How?

What will he retain?

What will he reverse?

Will he restore petrol subsidy?

Will he recreate multiple exchange rates?

How will he lower food prices, electricity costs and interest rates?

Where are the financing figures, implementation timetable and measurable targets?

This is the opposition’s central weakness—and Tinubu’s greatest political advantage.

Campaigning is not the endless production of press releases describing hardship. It is the presentation of a believable alternative government.

Atiku is so immersed in partisan opposition that he cannot acknowledge the reforms already occurring, yet he has still not shown Nigerians a superior programme for achieving the outcomes he demands.

Tinubu must convert stability into prosperity faster.

But the opposition must do more than shout, “Change it.”

It must explain what it will change, what it will preserve, what it will replace—and precisely how it will perform better.

A press release can describe hunger. It cannot govern a country.

ANOTHER RANTING OBIDIENT SPOTTED!

This is not an argument; it is a basket of insults tied together with exclamation marks.

If you allege theft, present the evidence, transaction and law violated. A presidential aircraft acquired for official state duties is not the same thing as money secretly carried into a private account, and the yacht claim has repeatedly been presented without explaining its official naval purpose.

Meanwhile,BLUEPRINTLESS Peter’s interview did not expose APC’s ineptitude. It exposed his own INTELECTUAL SHALOWNESS and inability to explain how he would govern differently.

Calling everyone “thieves” cannot provide Peter Obi with a security blueprint, power-sector plan or credible economic alternative.

Less ranting. More evidence.

Abuse is not proof, and Obi’s smile is not a manifesto.
