Good thread.

So how come the OP has not responded to all these comments??

I bet he or she created this thread to bash the force and most of the comments are not helping! tongue

Think about the system. . that's is what is messing up these guys: If a police officer chooses not to take bribe, his boss will take the bribe and he will most likely lose his job or post. . . so what choice does he have, really?

The fact that there are bad eggs out there up to the leadership does not mean there are no good ones out there.

Nope!

Folks, I find it hard to believe these stories of benevolence from NPF. I wonder if all these are made up in order to disabuse people's mind about them, or the stories are coming from NPF members who are on NL.

I have never been at the mercy of these glorified touts. In fact, if they ask for the roles and responsibilities of the NPF in Exams, I will be only person with a credit pass.

Yes they do help people. It happened that my former neighbour son involved in a fight and he was macheted and stabbed. This lead to him being unconscious and the police on patrol in Ebute-Meta saw him and while trying to revive him they manage to get his home address. They used that to trace the family of the boy at around 1am. They also helped the guy to general hospital on the Island. They work if they want to especially in mid nights.

ok i dont know if this is police or "lastma", but all na uniformed men (all join grin)
they have showed my dad "strong thing" in the past.
If a road is one way or no park zone, just put a clear notice so that all of the public can see it. not hide it somewhere no one can see it or it is covered by side market sellers or even worse, no notice is even existent, then this uniformed men stand watch waiting for a prey to fall victim and then charge u all the money in the world. (totally uncool).

NOOOO!!

When I was much younger, we got robbed. We called the Police the next morning and after they made us write our statement, we were asked to leave and that they will investigate. They never came to the house, they never dusted for finger print, did not chack for DNA residue, did not question the witnesses, NOTHING. After a week, my mum went back to the police station and raised hell, still nothing. As she was leaving, a plain clothe detective walked up to her and said if she wants this matter investigated fully, she would need to pay. So she offered them 15,000 Naira (in 1993). by the end of the week, they had arrested 9 boys and our security guard, recovered some of the stolen items (including the bag that contained vital documents of ours). They later told my parents to part with 2000 Naira so they can buy bullets and take them out somewhere and execute them.  shocked

A friends house got robbed while they were away. Apparently, the robbers scaled the fence and killed the lone guard that was watching the place. the corpse of the guard was spotted in the morning by the new guard that was supposed to be replacing the old (he spotted blood on the floor through a crack in the gate. Quickly the guard alerted the neighbors who called the police. The police charged #50,000 naira before anyone would be allowed into the compound through the fence. Till today, I do not understand that. And it wasnt until the neighbors rallied together and paid them before they did anything.

Years back, my folks had car troubles around 10pm at night and called us over to help puch the car home. While we were pushing, a friend spotted us and decided to give us a tow. NOW there is this checkpoint that is just 5  meters from my street that has been there for years. You would expect that they already knew us but noooo. Anyways, we got to the chackpoint and the police men there stopped us and asked us for "Towing permit". This angered my mum who is a barister and she started shouting at them telling them they had no right to ask her that and all. Anyways, one of the policemen draws his rifle, corks it, puts it level at my mums head and had just barely lifted it above her hairline when a shot rang out. The policeman quickly pulls out the magazine, puts it in his pocket, pulls out a different one, loads it and now tells my mum "I will gun you down like a common criminal". It was at this point that the other policemen ran towards the officer, snatched the gun from him, bundled him into the car and they sped off. Needless to say that was the last we saw of the checkpoint there again. O!!lest I forget, non of them had their name tag or number visibly displayed o!!

At 18, I was arrested for driving with "MY FATHERS DRIVERS LICENCE". NOW I had given him an original licence o! In as much as my dad and I both bare the same name (as I am a Junior), We both have our middle name displayed on it. It took 3 hours, a lawyer and a DPO to spot the foolishness of the arresting officer.

A Nigerian Police woman broke my car windshield because I wouldnt lower my windows for her to jump into my car.

SHOULD I CONTINUE!!!    angry

Bleep the police. . . . .

Good and evil

Back in 97 on my way to school, early mor mor . I was cornered by 3 area boys with daggers and charms they ordered my to empty my pocket and take of my wristwatch. They were speaking Yoruba and as Waffy sharp guy I pretend like say I no sabi their language. However, they got restless and were ready to spill blood when a lone police officer he looked haggard and hungry he had no hardware (gun) but he knew his duty was to protect and serve he walked with confidence, ordered the area boys to take a walk. That was my hero till this day. Na me know wetin I take eye see that morning.

Back in 08 my friends and I were pulled over and my banker friend refused to drop shandii since we have committed no crime, they asked for his document abi na particulars. Everything was up to date, then they asked him to recite his plate number na dia wahala burst. Mind you the officer in question was wearing a native outfit with sandals and police bullet proof vest with a mean looking AK 47. With strong eye the goat pikin ordered the driver  out of the vehicle at gun  Point. Like play play they were making a case on stolen vehicle. We had to square 6k to stop the harrasment. The one wey come pain me pass we had to pay gate man to open and close the gate.

Nevertheless, I still believe there is hope for reforming the NPF. Till today I cannot say the police are useless for I have witness the power of the badge in the hands of officers who truly believe in their duty.

There are the good, the bad and the ugly but they reflect the reality of the Nigerian society.

There is no SANE member of NPF. I can bet my life for that.

I got robbed @ Gun point while returning from work by 4 Mopol members of the force. When  I first sighted them at the bus stop with the mopol inscription on their dark T shirts with guns my confident to cross the bus stop built up. When they called my attention, I felt it would be the usual "who are you and let's see your ID card". I was flabbergasted when I was forced to raise my hands up with a double-barren gun pointed unmistakably at me. That was my first experience of a gun pointed at my forehead. My fear was on rampage within me. They took everything from me and the other guy that was caught in the web (it was at Palmgrove Bus stop in Lagos around 11.40pm) was drained of everything including his salary and a brand new laptop and a new mobile phone.
The sight of that man (in his late 30s) wailing like a baby after those policemen had jumped into their awaiting car and zoomed off was disheartening.  I had to trek kilometers to my aunt's place to pass the night. It was a bitter experience. Passers-by hardly noticed what was going on. They felt it was the usual police harassment. That was what gave me the confident to approach them when they barked orders at me. Who knows how many people they robbed that night.

There's also this team of 4-6 men that patrol Ikeja on a navy blue danfo bus. Those guys are terrorists and criminals. They make money more than Fuel subsidy cabals.

Terrible experiences with the NPF are not isolated. Those guys are no good

The +ve stories about NPF sounds too good to be true, there ain't no difference between a police man and an armed robber(my own view)

I have more than a dozen cases where police have been wonderful to me. if i should state them there will be no space for others to comment.

But this particular one stands out. While i was still at the Fed Poly Bida, i was returning to school late one night at about 11pm our vehicle got spoilt at lapai with a flat tyre, while trying to fix it, some armed men approached us but before they could come any close some police men showed up from nowhere to engage them the armed men flee for their lives, the police then took our driver back to town in their van while three others stood by and watched over us while we were in the car when they could not get a vulcanizer to fix our tyre, they gave us their spare tyre and escorted us to bida town, followed the driver to the park, removed the spare tyre and then proceed to drop all of us at our destination without collecting a kobo or asking us any stupid question. I was very proud of this men and if i have my way i will like to identify them for some sort of award

There are definitely are some good ones amongst them! But the majority remain bad. My little brother while back, pursued after my mothers car while she was going out and got missing in the process,we though he had gone with my mother and my mother though he was home with us! Till she came home in the evening, and the clouds were let loose. The police in our area had found him and kept him in the station, where he was found. And he seemed very happy saying that they gave him banana and orange. They didn't request for a dime, but hey this was some years back sha! I guess this is the closest they have been to good to me.

my colleagues in my office who are foreigners also have a good story to tell! they said their car spoilt one night in warri and 2 of them were in the middle of nowhere (they had gone to drop some friends off). and then, from no where a police van passed by them, stopped and helped them fix the car, and escorted them home and ddnt take a dime from them. . . on woulda expected that they'd milk them for the 'work done'
