Laptop Problem: Need Help Urgently by gfather(m): 3:23pm On Oct 22, 2007
Hello,

Can anyone help me out with my laptop problem.
i use a 60GB, 1GB RAM, Celeron 1GHz processor, Windows Xp. Recently, when ever i put my system on, it boots successfully but shuts down on it own some few minutes after i log on or while i try to run an application, but it immediately tries to come on again but its like there is something "holding it back" from doing so. Some time earlier it started by just shutting down and restarted but now its worse, it hardly comes on.

Some oine suggested id could be a virus, but i aint sure. Any one with advice or suggestion should holla me through this tread/forum or onochie_online@yahoo.co.uk

Hey u a Lucky bro cos i normally don't come around this Zone

nway it could either be a virus, spyware,malware or even a rootkit.

I'd have asked for screenshots to help me zero in on the problem faster but first try these steps below;

1. Download and install AVG(including AVG rootkit)
2. Download and install Spywareblaster
3. Download and install Ad-aware
4. Download and install CC cleaner which shall be used last to clean and repair your registry.

Start your computer in SAFE MODE and run all these applications one after the other and let me know how it goes here.

Lest i forget, it could also be as a result of a failing processor(encountered a situation as such sometime ago)

@ netotse

"u shld kno antiviruses wont work in safe mode because their services wont be started,"

That line is quite contradictory, safe mode is a windows setting(for troubleshooting) that loads default windows services but OF COURSE you can choose to start any other service or program you choose.

Please ensure you always double-check and research before making posts or contributions.

Thanks guys,

But so far none of you has prefered any authenticsolution to my problem. Firstly, i considered the idea of failling processor and i check up on that.
Also i CANT start my lappy' at all, so what's the concept about starting on safe mode?
Anyway, i'm still looking forward to more info from nairaland,

@nkc

Thank! atleast lets see if you could help this brother out! This a detailed report of what happens when i switch my lappy on.
1. After pushing power button, DOS display asking if i want to re-install the os press F10 for like 5 secs.(normal), Power light and DVD-RW drivr lights are on now.
2. Next the OS loads, i then log-on with my password as its administrator
3. WindowsXp comes up successful but within the space of 3-5 mins (if i'm lucky) it shuts down. Power light goes off, and tries to come on again (reboot), it struggles but comes up occasionally but shuts down even before i log-on, but the DVD-RW Drive poer light remains on through out this period.

To login with safe mode

Then select safe mode and login as usual.

mr guru, you should have noticed that he has had the problem for over a week now.

you will also observe that your suggestion has already been made before.

i had a similar problem a few months ago, and booting into safe mode made no difference.

Re: Laptop Problem: Need Help Urgently by Nobody: 4:56pm On Nov 07, 2007
I've told you- reinstall windows.

i spent a full day battling the problem, before i gave up and reinstalled windows.as long as you opt to keep your files, you will not loose your mp3s documents etc. just make sure you use a diff user name when reinstalling. as i said - 90% of your apps wont work cause the registry wentries will be deleted.Ralvy - you may be able to give a better solution - over 2 u grin
