The Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, yesterday reiterated his position that the current situation of Nigeria demands that universities should carve areas of niche for itself in order to address specific needs. http://www.leadership.ng/nga/articles/17249/2012/02/24/aregbsola_reiterates_need_specialisation_varsities.html |

Aregbe is right. It's only in Nigeria that universities want to offer all the courses in the world. Why can't we have specialized engineering, business, technology schools like it is in other parts of the world. |

even with the specialized engineering e.t.c where are the jobs? even, with the few jobs available, the public sector is notorious for employment on a man know man basis. |

Does the present policies on ground give room for all these? |

afam4eva: The man said it right. Th problem however is not saying it, its doing. We all know that our varsities are operating on "Jack-of-all-trade platform. We need to step up and embrace specialization in our various schools. We similar topics and discussion topics here. http://www.thewilfreds.com/category/education-and-academics-in-nigeria/ |

I was reading Adele's profile on Wikipedia, and I noticed that she attended a music school. In a later interview she credited that school for helping her nurture her talent. Can y'all imagine how many Adeles we would have produced if we had a Nigerian Academy of Music? The key to international competitiveness is specialization. We must formulate an educational system that will help each child identify, right from his/her formative years, the specific area of life where his/her passion, skills and talents lie, and provide the institutions that will facilitate the proper harnessing of these talents. We could, for instance, include a Guidance and Counselling course in secondary school to help students identify where they want to go. Dedicated and specialized tertiary institutions should be built to cater for the varied needs of the youth and they should stick to their calling. Why, for example, should a University of Agriculture have a faculty of engineering? Why should a University of Science and Technology have a faculty of humanities? These issued should be addressed by the Minister. We need SPECIALIZED institutions to harness youth with varied skills. Let's leave the conventional universities to the eggheads who will continue to contribute to human knowledge via research. |

A very sensible tought. Through proper guidance and counselling at the formative stage and specialisation and enterpreneurship education at the tertiary institutions postgraduate idleness would be a thing of the past. |
