The Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, yesterday reiterated his position that the current situation of Nigeria demands that universities should carve areas of niche for itself in order to address specific needs.

The governor, while speaking at the maiden matriculation and inauguration of the newly established Adeleke University Ede, said this had become imperative given the specific areas of national growth that are yearning for attention.

This was even as Aregbesola reminded those gathered for the occasion of the current efforts of the state government at remodeling the education sector in order to turn around the current failure rate in general examinations.

Aregbesola said, “University education, though universal in nature, is never provided in a vacuum. As a private university, this institution must carve a niche for itself and avoid the pitfall of being a generalist.

“A 21st Century University must have an appreciable area of specialisation through which it makes significant contribution to human development.

There are many areas of needs yawning for attention in science, medicine, ICT, liberal arts, management sciences, agriculture etc. A jack of all trade is never a master of any.”

Intimating those at the event with the new initiatives of his administration in the education sector, he said the failure rate was unacceptable to his government adding that within the shortest possible time, the situation must be reversed.
