Nigerians Encourage Their Leaders To Steal - Gov Peter Obi by Kilode1: 3:49pm On Feb 27, 2012

GOVERNORS in the country have been charged to evolve a fundamental strategies to deal with the cankerworm of corruption.

An Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Ibadan Prof. Oladipo Akinkugbe  gave the charge at a Public Lecture to mark the 3rd year anniversary of Governor Olusegun Mimiko in Akure.

Akinkugbe who spoke on the topic “Of Stated Goals and Proven Performance” said that the scourge had put the entire country in disrepute and continued to deal a severe blow on the nation’s credibility at the global level.

According to him governors both past and present were themselves part of the problem of corruption.

He called for transparency and sanctions on offenders lamenting that the number of persons that have been tried, found guilty and penalised or sanctioned can be counted on the “”fingers of a mutilated hand”.

The lecturer said that a nation, a state, a village, a city, a street could never rise above the iniquities of a fractured integrity that exists even complemented by manifest impunity.

According to him “a case study of the Presidency, governors, ministers, lawmakers, the Judiciary and civil servants in these past 13 years of civilian administration will be fascinating”.

The Chairman of the occasion, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra state said that Nigerians encouraged their leaders to steal saying that that ”sycophants are everywhere in the corridors of power”

Obi lamented that the cost of governance in the country encourages corruption and that leaders should be accountable and responsible with the finances in their care.

“”We should cut cost of governance to move forward and cut corruption, we need to stop the abuse if we do not want the society and our children yet unborn to take revenge.

Eminent Nigerians that attended the lecture assessed the governor Mimikos  performance and impact on the electorate and declared their support for a second term in office for him.

Among those who canvassed fresh mandate for Mimiko were retired Anglican Bishop Bolanle Gbonigi, former Governor of old Ondo State, Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae and former President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN).

Others included former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Aliyu Idi Hong, foremost industrialist, Chief Oba Otudeko, Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Olujimi

Akinkugbe as well as Ganiyat, the wife of late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi

I have said it on so many occasions here . . . All you sycophants, even those of you here on Nairaland, are the main reason why corruption and chaos continues to reign in Nigeria. Peter Obi is right in stressing that these Nigerians ENCOURAGE the status quo.
Sycophancy is the bane of existence in Nigeria, and Africa as a whole.

Statements like the one in bold offer a peep into the minds of those we elected to serve us. As right as it may be. And it is right. But I'll offer a diffrent perspective.

Obi, by putting the blame on his followers showed he CANNOT proactively tackle corruption within his own jurisdiction. It's a cop out, an admission that he is incapable of leading.

I see no references to serious efforts he's made to  tackle corruption.

Obi can propose changes to the law, even federal laws, he can rally civil society support to pass stringent anti corruption bills, he can be an activist Governor if he so wants to. That is the stuff of change-making politicians. But No. He's blaming the people he swore to serve and protect from corruption.

Absolutely ZERO sense of public accountability

This same mentality is rampant all over Nigerian Leadership from North to South across party lines.

But Obi is correct though, idiooots will still file out enmasse to vote him and his ilk back into power. No punishment for their zero performance. No consequences for their lack of accountability.

Right on point buddy! A cop out indeed and it speaks volume about the type of leader he is

Why should he be expected to have any sense of accountability to anyone when those who edge him on(the sycophants) are members of the same public? You talk to any member of this group, and you get the sense that the man is perfectly OK as is, and is, as always doing his best and should not be expected to perform miracles . .

Should we all give Gov Peter Obi an ovation for reminding us of the obvious? No. He is showing to the world how little he knows about being a great leader. Do we even have leaders in this country? Our leaders are just a bunch of self seeking, self enriching and corrupt class. He spoke about sycophants being every where at the corridors of all government houses but how many has he before now condemned? there are questions which beg for answer in the minds of the people who voted, no allowed him to be imposed on them. We the electorate should really blame ourselves for allowing people like him to remain in power even when we are aware of his inability to lead. I think every Nigerian should rise up against the level of corruption in this country maybe then and only then would we have true leaders in this country.

Coming from an elected leader, I agree it's a cop-out. However, the man is right to a certain degree.
I say that the day Nigerians begin to live in private and within their nuclear families the life of integrity and honesty that they would like to see in public life, is the day Nigeria will have it's turn-around.
This may be difficult to do, considering how deep into the core fabric of society corruption has been entrenched, but if we think it is worth having a decent society that our children will be proud of in future then we need to start making the sacrifice now.

Nigerians everywhere are praying for change, but if God was to answer our prayers today in a spectacular fashion, over 90% of Nigerians will not be around to enjoy the emerged "New Nigeria" because He will have to wipe out the unrepentants in the nation first so that those who truly crave change can effect it. Like the children of Isreal in the wilderness, many believe that we need God to intervene in the affairs of Nigeria but deep down we do not want him to - for we know that we are unwilling to pay the price required.

Change starts when your teenager knows that he/she cannot come home wearing something you have not bought for him/her without getting some serious grilling, when you steer clear of a friend or relative who magically comes into wealth, or when a local community demands to know the source of wealth of some "area father" who seem to have a bottomless pot of gold in his back garden ,  this is when we can begin to see change. The type of change that endures, the type that the next generation can build upon.

The example of Idiagbon is candid example that the type of miraculous channge Nigerians crave do not last. It also speaks volumes and possibly supports the saying that Nigerians deserve the leadership they have produced in the last 2-3 decades. Like Nineveh, I pray that our nation will truly repent before it is too late.

Generations unborn beg us to make the sacrifice. We continue to grief God's heart.
Let charity begin from our homes and then we will see real change.

Showing the world what has been obvious from day one, even as people in Nigeria continue to RE-ELECT the same bunch and sycophantically worship them all through? Nah!!! The world does not care anymore. Just watching for when Nigerians will decide to get a clue.

The people should wake up. They know the sycophants, but steal, do nepotism, commit atrocity and misappropriate, embezzle, loot and rigged when advised. They open their court-there is one in every goverment house, to them and and recieve their support.
Your execellency be execellent chase away the cartel. People must vote them out regulerly.

@^^ I suppose rapists can also claim that it was not their fault because some women dress "suggestively".
Irresponsibility
runs deep in our collective psyche hence we never seem to be able to confront our demons frontally. We'll blame our "misfortunes" on anything else from the devil, witchcraft, bad roads not bad driving habits, others or "sycophants" as if he does not have any self control or responsibility for his actions(chief executive) or inadequacies.

Gov. Peter Obi has shown clearly he does not know the qualities of leadership.

He who wants to work as a leader should lead by example.

Gov. Rochas Okorocha, less than a year in Imo State identified the loop holes of corruption and income leakages. He came up with strategies on how to tackle them.

Leaders should stop transfering blames on Nigeria, But rather see it as an opportunity to curb corruption in the country.

A society that expects a LG councillor to build a new house six months after election or risk being called a failure is surely encouraging her leaders to steal. Yes he should stand firm against such people but that does not take away the facts that the entire Nigerian community is awashed wt corrupt expectations.

Thank you Mr Obi for one day visited and lamented, are you pity Ondo State for under development or what ?
Because you speaks in parable about abuse of cash that was going on.

We are already know that fuel is N145 per litre soon.
Now how much would you pay per vote sharp sharp Mr. Governor you and I know that Election it not free and let increase the money.  tongue tongue tongue tongue tongue tongue tongue tongue kiss kiss kiss kiss kiss

People suppose to invite governors to declare their second term as a good leader but today leaders paid those who are suffering from poverty and greedy peaple to gather in front of camera for their second term ambition.

Till now no LG Government Election in the Ondo State In general after three years in office.

Phone up any NL member and tell him his brother has just been appointed Oil Minister of Nigeria.

Watch the jubilation.

Why is he jubilating?

Just an hour earlier he was on NL lambasting 'our leaders' for corruption.

That's the problem we have. The vast majority of us are fukking HYPOCRITES. Excellent at pointing the finger at others, but never demanding anything like the same level of ethics from our own selves.

I didn't bother to read the original post for the simple truth the victimized(the poor Nigerians) cannot be blamed for the loots by corrupt leaders. When a broad ethnic based country like Nigerian educated and those in the academic fields haven't learnt to accept the fact to finding solutions to this unhealthy circle of corruptions in the country - not this blame on the citizens who have be pushed into point of no return(a place where they can not speak for themselves with one voice then). We can only question these people use to the society with the way he is cheating blame or just looking for avenue to attention without doing anything. Aren't they the educated, senators, the governors, etc supposed to be the voices of the voiceless? The power of a nation depends on the educated citizens. Of what use is the blame without looking for a solution? There is no way I can agree with the topic than to say governor Peter Obi is just another incompetent leader looking for who to blame for the leadership failure.
