See, football is one of those games where club fans are extremely loyal to their club and that, in combination with football being a competitive sport, makes their opinions about other club players very biased. When you read football fora or comment sections, it’s filled with trash talkers and the better a player of the opposing team is, the more trash he gets. They will literally search for anything to bring that player down and fail to have an objective look at it. That trash talk influences the public opinion and I feel that many talented players do not get the recognition they deserve due to fanboy behaviour.

That being said, any objective football fan will tell you that Eden Hazard is not overrated. He’s that guy which makes an entire team play well and can decided a game on his own. Hazard is able to pull 3–4 players of the opposing team to him to create space for the other players. Nothing of that will reflect in his 0.33 scoring ratio statistic. He’s like what Zinédine Zidane was for Juventus and Real Madrid, albeit from a different position, but with the same mindset. I don’t think Zidane even scored more than 10 goals per season in his career ever.

I personally feel that you cannot compare Hazard and Messi due to so many parameters not aligning. For starters, Messi is a Barcelona youth product and has always played there. He was able to convince people of his exceptional talents at a way younger age, on a way bigger platform, in the best team of the world. Hazard on the other hand started at Lille, where he won individual rewards, but it wasn’t until at Chelsea that the world started to notice him. Secondly, Messi’s club is a powerhouse that trashes 90% of the opposing teams with 5–0. Of course your statistics will look exceptionally better than any other player in any other league.
