I'm presently driving somewhere around kuto, in abeokuta and there's massive hail storm here. It's so strong,it's got people leaving their cars for shelter. To give you an idea.it's like having gravel poured on the roof of your vehicle from a four storey building.this is the second time I'm witnessing this anomaly.the first being around 1981 In Festac as a kid.Is this phenomenon normal,or a sign of the end time as predicted.2012

They are normal anywhere in the world. By normal i mean the phenomena, not the occurrence or its frequency.

Re: Hail Storm In Abeokuta by Nebeuwa(m): 12:38am On May 04, 2012
Hail storms can form in tropical areas as well, but it is very rare. They are normally found in the mid-latitudes.

Hail forms in strong thunderstorm clouds, particularly those with intense updrafts. The atmosphere above Abeokuta must be very cold, when it should be warm, since we are talking about the tropics.

It is not common, but does happen from time to time.

We use to call these "yinyin" in Yoruba, but they were never big like in the photo.

I remember picking this up in the rain as a kid in 85-1990s. Its very frequent in Osun State back then.

But it disappeared as we grew up, that it got us thinking why such rain is no longer falling!!

Good old days!! U run out n pick while ma-ma is calling u to get in, but its a good such of ice-water back then!..lol..

two yrs ago in Katsina, we experienced a disastrous hail storm. it started raining normally, then later hail stones came along with the rain and finally it stopped raining and only hail stones were falling for about 5mins or more. some hail stones were as big as pure water ice block. they came in various shapes n sizes; some were perfect round balls with spikes around as if they were artistically carved. it was so heavy dat some people thought it was the end of the world. it damaged vehicles windscreens and injured lots of people who were outside at the time. in fact due to the size and the speed which they fell, the hail stones penetrated peoples' roofs and ceilings and were falling into peoples living and bedrooms. it was really an unprecedented experience for me and a lot of people in kt. i watched out to see it in news in the media due to the huge damage it caused and because it was an uncommon thing but it was not captured; peharps because it happened around 8pm. so its not supprising as the OP posted those pics; the ones that fell in kt were even much bigger!
