NBC is right to ban the show as it is currently. If MNET still wants to broadcast BBA, then they should abide by the laws that guide broadcasting in Nigeria. Scenes that need to be censored should be. The media, especially (cable) tv is very influencial on young people especially kids. It is important not to promote some of the stuff that went on in BBA. Anyone who wants the uncut version can spend his or her money to buy the DVD afterwards. |

@kobo i understand ur point of view but have u wondered why they have to rate tv programs, and also include parental guidance adviced? if the parent allows his 3 year twin to watch such program on tv it is function of the parent and not function of the tv station, since we are in the bid to stop violence on tv we should also start from WWE shows, children also enjoy them. the average society in the world is a mixture of different extremes of people, and nigeria is a diversed country we have to learn to live with different people with different taste and views different from ours, i dont watch BBA cos to me it is waist of time but i am not in support of banning it afterall some folks enjoy it, we have right to choose let us exercise our rights some one ealier mention that it throws our tradition and our heritage down the window, the politicians have long lost that they have thrown it out thru the window when they decided to make politics a do or die affair. |

kaecy5: I already addressed this earlier. The reason why shows are rated are not so the public will have to be the ones to decide to turn the channel or not. That is not even close to the main reason why . The reason is so Channels/Stations whose licenses do not allow such ratings are not able to air such shows. and then people are then able to choose from those that are aired as they should. Rating PORN as 16NL is ridiculous and silly and that is what this ban is meant to show. It has to have serious ratings that will not have to leave the people at the mercy of the Producers of such shows, but turn it the other way where the people can, if they want, choose to subscribe to those sort of shows. This show is being aired on a channel that airs harmless other shows. If a Porn channel is open to the public as in Not access restricted, then there is a problem there. Even here in the USA, Porn channels have RESTRICTED access, parents can then in their own time choose to open that access to their kids or not in their own privacy, It is not open to the Public and then parents be forced to RESTRICT access if they have a way to do that. NO that is not the way it should be. The power should be in the hands and to the advantage of the people. |

i wonder if some people are defending press freedom or BBA 2!! but somebodies freedom ends where another persons freedom starts and BBA 2 went too far i just stumbled upon a news about the nigerian girl in the show being fingered while unconcious due to excessive alcohol and the other mates( girls ) begging the guy doing it to stop and he did only to sit somewhere and smell his fingers, and this same guy happens to be the winner of this ugly show well done senators |

Seun: If BBA wants to continue to entertain people like you, they will have to solicit you and your kind the proper way. Offer you a subscription which you can easily sign up for at your own leisure, instead of forcing us all to deal with them and their show, they can offer it to those who actually care for it through subscriptions the legal way stations with licenses to air such filth should. |

Just for the record I dont watch BB neither have i ever bothered to coz i consider it a waste of time and i dont even care if it is banned But for people to come here an say things like Africa has "morals" and "culture" and westerners dont requires the willing suspension of disbelief to agree with that. In the most pathetic continent on earth, where intolerance of the right of others to do what you dont approve off is the watch word, bodies litter the road, jungle justice and extreme violence reeks the streets, 7yr old children hawk on highways, incessant conflicts and bloodshed, self inflicted poverty and oppression on the masses, little economic advancement and corruption fully part of the society and human life is cheaper than chicken, i wonder what in the world makes anybody think that the most backward continent on earth has more culture and "morals" than others What would scare the mind of a person more? People set ablaze alive or cut to piecies in public and there corpses left to roast on the street, Law enforcement using their uns to smash peoples skulls in public, bribery and corruption as a way of life even in the highest places, poverty and death, bloody rituals, incesant conflicts OR BBA The above clearly showcases why Africa is where it is now, and why it would always remain like that. |

And please Anbody making the argument that MNET = CBS is dead wrong MNET can be compared to HBO CBS to NTA so that analogy is rubbish The US goverment can't stop HBO from showing Nudity if they so chose CBS is a regular basic TV station and does not require special subscription so even 2yr olds can turn the tv on and watch it. HBO is usually subscribed for If you don't like nudity, change the freaking Channel or cut your subscription. Thats what il do, not go around demamding that everyother person stops watching it because i don't want to watch it. Africans |
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by Kobojunkie: 10:42pm On Nov 18, 2007 |
sage: uummmm, no one has so far said anything about Africa having morals and western world does not. 2) No one compared MNET with CBS, you did that and your claim is flawed, CBS can be seen on free and the other channels are through CABLE, 3)IF you do not realize it now, you should consider that CBS and many other channels are subscription Channels ( CABLE) but you need to actually say you want HBO in your package, meaning extra sub needed, 4) MNET is Cable TV provider as INsight is Cable tv provider in America and having BBA on cable tv without the extra restraint is what the whole argument has been about. Majority of people get their TV channels by paying for Cable so it is no public airwaves. However those who want the Porn Channels need to actually say they want those and so pay more to get those. Do you get it now |

Why so much hysteria about the senators' decision to ban BBA frm being on Nigerian tv if thats the only way to restore sanity and moral standards in the society so be it. This is Africa for crying out loud, not the western world where there is little or no respect for morality and values, our cultures and values should not be compromised for a million bucks! Please when did we loose our sanity and moral standards This is Africa for crying out loud, not the western world Africa where over 70% of the populace live below the poverty line Africa where their leaders are known for the highest level of corruption Africa where leaders perpetuate themselves in power Africa where in the 21th century, its populace are still grappling with the 3 basic necessities of life as we were thought in social studies those days (Food, Clothing & Shelter) See all the disasters that has happen in the western world, see how they come out to help each other (live and lets live). Majority of African would not act in that light (Every man for himself, GOD for us all), so I am a little bit lost at which culture we are talking about. Which one will I say, and which one will I leave romeo: I don't think you watched it so why judge Did you not stumble on the story of the women rights group that insisted and watched the footage , what they said after that bigboy2006: You no ask for the one when your leaders dey carry go swiss banks when be your right Nigerians texazzpete: These things have been there from the days of Abraham (Father of all nations) and Lot. That they are in a minority does not mean that they don't exist, or that it is not our culture. I wonder when Nigerians will learn to be fair to each other |

its very simple,if dstv is goin to make you commit sin don't buy it and if u already have it, u can always sell it,nobody has the right to dictate what another adult should or shouldn't watch,as it is in nigeria right now, there are more pressing issues that needs urgent attention. |
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by texazzpete(m): 1:21am On Nov 19, 2007 |
@Kobojunkie I feel calling BBA 'porn' is a pretty harsh call indeed. And yes, it's rating (16NL) is apt. 16 year olds can handle nudity. I'm sure the ratings for movies with steamy sex scenes are similar, at least i'll bet Basic Instinct is about the same rating. BTW. . .am i the only one crazily amused at 'fake davidylan's' newest attempt to mimic the real deal's username? Seun must be keeping him on for comic relief. |

MNET could not have been that stupid-from the onset those guys were told to sign that they will not sue them for anything!! So lawyers, I beg down tools! If you signed your rights and dignity away, without duress, for ordinary 12million Naira, then face the music of what your eyes see. If you won you would not have shared it, so its your choice, your life- you signed!! You guys can not be serious, African culture, morality, values?? Are you guys living in the same Niga? Or are you one not "in town"? The only African value is "hypocracy"- pretence. The reality of our Niga values today is FAR FAR WORSE than what MNET has done. In 1988, you would be very bold to just walk up to any unknown Uni-girl to invite her to a party-just to dance o, no blues! In 2007, with one phone call you can get 20 unknown real University nice looking girls to do ANYTHING. Believe me, na LEVELS. ANYTHING!!!!! Did you notice that in all the relationships the ladies "toasted" all the guys!! ? Most young Niga girls prefer married men when exposed to a smooth well mannered one, so no surprise Richard won. With ring in hand, the ladies screamed and voted for him. Times have really changed, and Africans are just religious hypocrites! Thats why the white man pass us, he does not deny it, he studies the change and provides normal solutions, checks etc. We stupid African, na ban!!, Denials, no acknowledgement thus no solution or progress just more and more under skin rot. Pls talk of human rights of Ofunneka instead, and not that nonsense African culture, morality, rouge values?? |
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by sage(m): 2:43am On Nov 19, 2007 |
@Kobojunkie Im saying that what happened with CBS and the outcry cannot be compared with MNET CBS can be watched for free like NTA in and is available on regular TV HBO on the other hand is gotten by subscription and showcases popular shows like sopranos that families watch and also show nude programs and sex Nobody, not even the goverment can say that because young people can watch HBO therefore dont show nudity Measures are already in place. If you dont want to watch HBO, 1 change the channel, 2 off the TV or 3 end your subscription. Simple and short. You dont go around demanding that because you dont like the nudity HBO shows, they should shut it down so everybody must do as you do. IF BBA was on NTA then the argument for banning it might be valid. But since you have to subscribe to MNET, the best thing might be to get MNET to use the style used in western countries so you can include or remove the channel from your subscription list. BUt NOT to go around and demand that everyother person must not watch something because you disapprove of it. |
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by sage(m): 2:49am On Nov 19, 2007 |
My point though is that we Africans must learn tolerance and accept others ideas. That is the biggest single problem that faces the continent. We are raised to be very intolerant and disrespectful of the fact that other people have a right to have differing opinions and attitudes that dont impede us in anyway. And we dont realise it An intolerant continent has a bleak future |
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by Kobojunkie: 4:42am On Nov 19, 2007 |
Again @Sage, you completely skip what I posted and go on and on about what is not. Sopranos, Did you check the rating on that show. Have you ever called your Cable You get basic family channels and THEN you can pay extra to get the MA channels. I have been dealing with my Cable company. Like I explained earlier, what happened with CBS and the other channels that aired the super bowl on cable happened that way cause they were the basic channels with no license for such showings. Now if that was aired on HBO it would have been a whole nother story. I don't understand why you are calling for tolerance but refuse to read and understand what others who do not see things as you do post. I already explained that MNET happens to be a CABLE network and even though that show was rated as N16 by BBA does not mean the rating is appropriate for such a show. Over here it is rated MA and for adults to view. Learn to be tolerant yourself an read what I am saying. Banning that show on public air is ok but BBA can go ahead and come up with someway to restrict that particular channel to THOSE WHO WANT TO and tHEY CAN GO AHEAD AND SUBSCRIBE FOR IT SPECIALLY. Why in the world do you feel Changing the Channel is the best solution for those who do not want to see it ?? Changing the Channel is apparently not even ENOUGH here in the USA. RESTRICTING the Channel is the way to go HEre, why not there?? Just cause so many attrocites have been perpetrated in Africa for years now, does not mean it is Now OK and africans are hypocrites for calling for a change. Come on !!!! THINK, For Crying out loud , THINK!!!!! How does not compute ? Just cause we have lost our ways, making a positive Change in the right direction is suddenly EVIL?? Hypocritical?? WOW!! why don't we just never call for an end to 419 when you suddenly start benefitting from it cause if we do, we will suddenly become hypocrites cause 419 has been around for years Your idea of Africa and your approach seems to show that you happen to feel if it is against you, it is intolerant. I do not understand what your thinking it but that is not the way life is. To add, if you do your research, you will find that HBO does not have the same license agreement as channels like History Channel and Scifi have. That is why the latter can be slammed with fees if they air nudity of the kind that HBO airs. You do know that, right?? Try to watch a movie on Scifi and then watch the version of the same movie that you will see on HBO and you might notice that the others clip out so much of the foul language and the nudity that they can. |
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by Kobojunkie: 4:48am On Nov 19, 2007 |
@Texazzpete, from what I have seen of it, infact the much I could stand of it, I consider it pawn. I mean I have not seen that much exposure since I was in University. Exposure that does not even hold anything back is porn, I am sorry. Basic Instinct was rated Basic instinct, I have seen and I know for sure, without a doubt, those two do not compare at all , the rating on that movie is R, which is not saying 16 year olds can see it. I am personally against porn and do not want to have to continually have to guard my remote control from my people in the house. I want them to be free to watch tv even when I am not around. That is why I do not get HBO or showtime or even the other dirty channels. When I get my Cable hooked up, the company knows I am not getting porn channels added automatically, they offer them to me should I be interested. That is the way it ought to be. Not have parents order cable and have the porn shoved at them whether they like it or not and then force the parents to have to guard their tv even when they are not there at home to monitor. Sure kids can be corky sometimes BUT parents need the companies to be on their side Not against them. Simple!!! |

I beleive the only reason our noble senators have decided to ban BBA is not because of morals, but because , like so many other nigerians, they believe that ofunneka was shortchanged. from all accounts she was the favorite to win the $. the ban is not about morals but about a petty response to the 'beef ' other africans ( who decied that a handsome serial philanderer from angola (was it?) is much cooler than a domesticated plain jane from nigeria ) have for nigeria. there have been at least three editions of BBA on mnet. how come its only now our senators decided to ban it? perhaps if nigerians are 'shortchanged' at Miss world pagenants, our noble senators will suddenly realise that Miss World is immoral. @ kobojunkie, I'm suprised that after all your years in yankee, that bastion of democracy, you have refused to imbibe the second Amendment(or is it the first?) - the right to free speech. it has been pointed out - there are all sorts of locally available media out there that can corrupt our kids. lolly magazine - featuring dauda nackson, porn DVDs sold by bustops everwhere in nigeria, suggestive music videos aired by TV stations, mills & boon novels - and our senators are getting their knickers in a twist over a medium that is available to only a fraction of the population( when decode drops to n5000 and subscription to n1500 per month, maybe i'll get one ) - the fraction they reside in. i don't have DSTV in my house, so it was mainly on nairaland, and once in a waiting room at a clinic- that i got to see any of BBA. what i saw was steamy and yes - shocking. i got the impression that the producers decided to push the envelope- lets see just how bestial people can get when $s are involved. there has been a steadily increasing display of sex in BBA. in previous editions, sex was not enaged in as openly as it was in this version.the most the voyeurs could hope for was shower hour. if this upward trend continues, what should one expect from bba3? sex on the first day? gay sex? outside of the nigerians of opportunistic morality( i didn't see any moralists on the month long BBA thread) the rest of africa seems to be unconcerned. expec t that bba 3 will be at the next level. |

Offer you a subscription which you can easily sign up for at your own leisure,And that is precisely what DSTV is. It's a subscription-based service. Are we completely dumb or just intolerant? As a regulator, the only change I might require of DSTV is to activate the parental control service by default. |

I'm in total support of the senate on this matter, coz i think its time for us to resist immorality with the whole of our strength. The Bible confirms it that we should "resist the devil, (Immorality) and he will flee from you". |

Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by Nobody: 1:24pm On Nov 19, 2007 |
With the level of intelligence of our senate. If they were to stop porn dvd, they would probably ban importation of dvd players and drives. Can someone please tell me what is african culture. I hope its not the giving away of women as free gifts to rich men. Ask a nigerian to tell you about the history of nigeria, he would start from 1960. Lets face it we dont have a culture or tradition to cherish. We dont even have heroes to make statues of. The african culture and morals is just an idea we developed when religion came. It was never real. |

Something crossed my mind.they waited for the show to end before they went on a fake charade of indecency?sounds like a hypocrite accusing his reflection. Rubbish. Would they have been talking like this if ofuneka won?they would be congratulating her in the first place.this is simply an example of how this nation treats its citizens. |
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by Shinatu: 1:46pm On Nov 19, 2007 |
Maybe a change of name would solve the problem I think the whole 'big brother 'concept is faulty. This particular big brother gets paid when the housemates are naughty as a matter of facts he manipulates things to make sure they are naughty! When you hear the name Big Brother Africa, you may expect a programme that is about African virtues (even though Africa has her vices as some people have stated) and get disappointed when you actually take a look. I think that is what happened to the Senators. |

What a bunch of hypocrites. Why wait till the end of the show to issue a fake ban, but we have seen it all before in BBA1.
MultiChoice Africa (MCA) services some 385,000 subscribers in 47 countries across the continent and adjacent Indian Ocean islands. This subscriber base grew by 50,000 for the last year, with the best growth in the Angolan market. The South African subscriber base ended the last year at 1.25 million subscribers, 83% of whom receive digital signals. The analogue subscriber base closed on 217,000. The number of digital subscribers increased by 138,000, ending the year on 1.03 million households. A new lower-priced tier aimed at the emerging market (DStv Compact) grew to 42,000 subscribers. Less than 500,000 Nigerians have access to DSTV and the BBA program and anybody that does not want it can change to HiTV/myTV/CTL/FSTV/Trend TV e.t.c The African culture is not "nudo-phobic". |
