The issue of polygamy generates two vital questions: is God a compromiser or is He a God with a changeable character? Truly, He is neither a compromiser nor a God with a changeable character. Where then should the right balance be on the issue of polygamy since not regarding it as a sin makes God a compromiser before some, while regarding it as a sin makes God a God with a changeable character before others? The life of prophet David settles it all. Prophet David experienced the joy of salvation produced by the holy spirit, while he lived in polygamy for about twenty years. When the Bethsheba issue came up, his confession proved that, that act destroyed the joy of salvation he was used to. (2Samuel 12:9, Psalm 51). "as many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the children of God", Romans 8:14, KJV. You can now see that true godly men who are polygamists have joy of salvation produced by the holy spirit. Who then are you to speak for the holy spirit? "Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation", Psalm 51:12, KJV. The joy of salvation is available to godly polygamists. Prophet David enjoyed it while living with more than one wife. In the apostolic era, apostle Paul at a time prevented polygamists from being Bishops, that was when the developing church needed strict adhoc measures to enable her attain solid foundation. This order did not start from the very beginning as the clause "set in order the things that are wanting" in Titus 5:1 indicated. At least we know that God cannot change or lie or show favouritism. He cannot give false salvation assurance for a second, how much more in David's 35 years polygamous life. So therefore, we come to the conclusion that the right balance is the fact that there is a version of polygamy that satisfies the taste of God, which was not common in the early church, just as it is today. The practice of the wrong version of polygamy was confirmed by Josephus and many other early writers. Malachi 2:14 and 1Corinthians 5:1 also have a hint of it. Don't kill the child that is born into controversy. "restore unto me the joy of thy salvation" will be the judgment day nightmare to those who use the Bible against polygamy. Who made that statement?
