The National Assembly is to create six additional states to bring the geo-political zones at par, according to Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, who represents Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Federal Constituency of Anambra State.
Ekwunife told newsmen in Awka on Tuesday that the South-East, which currently has five states, would get two more while the other zones with six states will get one state each, thus leaving each zone with seven states.
Ekwunife said the members of the house in their just-concluded retreat in Port Harcourt viewed the 36-state structure and the 774 councils as not sufficient in touching the lives of the citizens with democracy dividends.
“The National Assembly is set to amend the 1999 Constitution again in an effort to further fine tune it to make the nation’s laws better, especially in areas of need to narrow down observed inconsistencies.
“It is obvious there are some areas that require further amendment that the nation’s constitution being the grund num of all laws should be devoid of any inconsistency, while areas that have become undesirable should be expunged,” she stressed.
The legislator listed some other areas deliberated by the members to include the percentage of women representation in national affairs and the environment, especially the indiscriminate hoisting of telecommunication base stations.
Other areas, according to her, are the problems of erosion, flooding, oil pollution and the separation of the office of the Minister of Justice from that of the Attorney-General of the Federation, among others.

I do not support states proliferation but anything to bring to par the number of states in each zone is welcome by me. Otherwise states should be abrogated and replaced by six regions.

7 states for each zone or no state for each zone. QED.
