Oluwaseun Alamu Emerges Best In Africa At World Science Contest by Nobody: 10:55am On May 31, 2012
All African countries stood still for Oluwaseun Alamu when he emerged best science student in Africa during UNICEF World Science Day 2012 competition.

Seun, 16 who represented Rainbow College, Ogun State, came first in Africa and was awarded a trophy and certificate for excellence. With this feat, he has made a bold statement that Nigeria and Africa are no longer the dark country and continent but that if given the right opportunity, we can be the best.

In the UNICEF World Science contest, Rainbow College succeeded in writing Nigeria’s name in the world book of records having produced the Third Best Science School in the world, Best Science School in Africa, Best Science Student in Africa and 38 ruby awards/certificates.

By this achievement, high priority is now placed on African education as the breakthrough has enabled Africa take its pride of place in the world. More importantly, the world is now forced to recognise Africa in the rating of world schools.

The online competition which took place within 24 hours on March 8, 2012, requires a knowledge of facts, quick thinking and Information Communication Technology (ICT) readiness. It covers three key curricular areas which include: Mathematics, Science and spelling in English Language.

I'm sure there wouldn't be much comment and media (Western Media) will not broadcast it but we would have seen many comments/headlines on both local and intl tv stations hadn't been the news is about suicide bombing, kidnapping, NURTW clash, drug baron busted and d like.
Its high time we shun Tribalism. We all are Nigerians Whether we like it or not untill d country ceased to exist!

Well done. My congratulations go to the school and its students.

I am curious though - did the results only just come out? Were the students and their school only just awarded the honours? Since 8th March?

I am trying really hard to avoid sounding partisan, but how come one never sees the federal youth & education ministries whenever stuff like this happens? Why? Why is it only Big Brother Africa winners & other winners of showbiz contests of dubious value who get recognition?

Bolaji Abdullahi et al, over to you.

Its intresting to note that this feat is being seen to have been achieved by a nigerian, not by a particular ethicity. I hope we all start appreciating that the outside world would always tag our activities either good or bad to have been achieved by a nigerian, not igbo, hausa, yoruba e.t.c.

It is because it is a yoruba! They rarely tribalise things. And they are among tribes in which you rarely see people who their only thinking towards nigeria is Division....if it were to be an igbo man, you will have seen people trooping here hailing him as a biafran! And praising themselves. Our problem in africa is tribalism, until we stop, we won't get anywhere!!!!

I tire my brother oooo...the problem is nigerians are infected by inferiority complex. We should ignore all these foreign media who always exaggerate on the negative side of africa....and always show the positive news about their own countries. Let us start our own world news platform, where we can display the positivity of africa.
But another thing is Africans might not even watch the stations

Like I said yesterday on "Assess me after One Year - GEJ" thread, one of the three thing GEJ needs to focus is EDUCATION. Rather than renaming schools, provide research funding particularly in sciences is very important.

@ Topic, congratulation... hopefully, someone will not try to cover your light

Very commendable!!!!

Congratulations to the young man. . .hopefully he will be able to apply what he knows in a practical way. Don't get me wrong, no doubt the boy is very smart but lets face it. . .our education system promotes cramming and learning in theory. We know Chemistry in theory buy very few know how to find their way in a lab. We know physics in theory. . .invite us to a science fair for new and original inventions and balk. Biology nko? We can recite all the major parts of the body of a living thing.. .but how many of us has ever dissected a frog to see how their digestive system differs from that a lizard?

I still don't understand how an accredited school can get away with not having a fully equipped science lab. It's just awful!!

Anyway; I hope with the exposure this young man has gotten leads to bigger and better things for him.

Just a hint of the intellectual superiority of the Yoruba race! The Northerners can keep bombing one another in the North while my butt sniffing, hairy ape looking neighbors in the east can remain in their jungle. Long live SW Nigeria and parts of the North!
