23 Killed, several injured in Iraq on eve of Ashura

Wed Nov 13, 2013 11:13AM

At least 23 Shia Muslims and members of the security forces have been killed and several others wounded in a series of bomb blasts across Iraq on the eve of Ashura commemorations, officials say.

On Wednesday, Iraqi security and medical officials said the bombs have targeted Shia mourners as well as security forces in the northern and western parts of the country.

Iraqi officials said at least eight Shia mourners were killed and 25 others were wounded in three bomb blasts near Baqubah, north of the capital Baghdad.

In the Iraqi city of Tikrit, 170 kilometers north of Baghdad, 11 people, including three police officers, were killed after a bomb went off at a police checkpoint.

In addition, in the city of Fallujah, some 50 kilometers west of Baghdad, bomb attacks killed four more people.

The bombings took place as people were commemorating the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the third Shiite Imam, and 72 of his companions, who fell in a battle for justice against the second Umayyad caliph, Yazid I, in the Iraqi city of Karbala about 14 centuries ago.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but systematic bombings are a favorite tactic of al-Qaeda-linked groups, who seek to destabilize the country.

Data released by Iraq’s ministries of health, interior and defense on November 1 showed that violence in the country has killed 964 people -- 855 civilians, 65 policemen and 44 soldiers -- and injured 1,600 others in October.

Twin bombings hit Shiite mosque in northern Iraq

Published time: November 23, 2013 16:04

The twin bombing, a vehicle laden with explosives followed by a suicide attacker in Iraq’s troubled northern town of Tuz Khurmatu killed at least nine people.

A further 54 people were wounded at the Shia mosque, police and medical sources said according to Reuters.

Tuz Khurmatu is located 170 km north of Baghdad in an area which both the Baghdad central government and the Iraqi Kurdistan autonomous region claim as theirs.

Thousands die every year in Iraq due to civil violence, with over seven thousand killed already in 2013, which has been the deadliest year since 2008 when Iraq was under American occupation.

The frequency of the ethnic violence and bloodshed has raised fears that Iraq is slipping towards all out civil war, which it experienced in 2007-2008, when tens of thousands died even while US troops were handling the majority of the security.

Insurgents have also benefited from the civil war in Syria, which has seen violence spill over into neighboring Iraq.

Qaeda claims Iraq anti-Shiite attack that killed 25: SITE

BAGHDAD, June 10, 2012 (AFP) — Al-Qaeda’s front group in Iraq has claimed a suicide car bombing against the Baghdad headquarters of an Iraqi Shiite foundation that killed 25 people, the SITE Monitoring Service said on Sunday.

“One of the passionate sons of the Sunnis came out in a quick attack against this evil lair that is called the Shiite endowment,” the Islamic State of Iraq said, according to a translation of a message the US-based SITE said was posted on jihadist forums.

The June 4 attack on the Shiite endowment, which manages Shiite religious sites and mosques across Iraq, left 25 people dead and at least 65 wounded.

kaybyte: pls also try and report the killing of sunni muslims and others by shiit such as bashar assad thanks.

so you mean Bashar al-Assad send suicide bombers into Sunni mosques and areas to kill innocent civilians? please open another thread and try to post the news.i am very sure no one has come across it-no media report.besides, the majority of Syria is Sunni, and therefore the majority of officers in the Syrian army serving assad is sunni too.so by commonsense, it is sunni terrorists and rebels fighting assad that are being killed by sunni soldiers in the Syrian army.by the way, bashar is not Shia.he is alawite (an offshoot Shia sect).carry your bad belle commot this thread.

Takfiri Deobandi terrorists of Sipah Sahaba ASWJ Taliban behead a retired Pakistan Navy officer Saleem Raza, who was reportedly a converted Shia, and took his head away with them after beaheading him at his Sohrab Goth house.

Later, they drilled his head and hung it with a rope on Goth bridge with a notice saying this is revenge for Rawalpindi incident.

Pakistan car bombing kills Shia pilgrims

Explosive-laden vehicle blows up as bus passes by on outskirts of Quetta in first apparent sectarian attack of 2014.

Last updated: 01 Jan 2014 19:45

A suicide car bombing in Pakistan has killed two Shia Muslims in the country's first apparent sectarian attack of 2014.

The attack took place on Wednesday in Akhtarabad, on the outskirts of Quetta in Balochistan, and targeted a passenger bus carrying Shia Muslims who were returning from a pilgrimage to Iran.

"An explosive-laden car which was parked along the roadside blew up as the bus passed by it, killing two people and wounding 17," Abdul Razzaq Cheema, Quetta police chief, told AFP news agency.

He said that the 17 injured included four policemen.

Police officials who had been escorting the bus rescued passengers from the wreckage before it caught fire, Cheema said.

The bus was bringing back about 50 pilgrims from Iran.

Commander Razzaq, local bomb-disposal chief, told AFP that the car had been blown up by somebody sitting in it.

Nobody has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistani media reported that President Mamnoon Hussain and Nawaz Sharif, prime minister, as condemning the attack and the Shia political party Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslimeen announcing a three-day period of mourning over the incident.

There has been a rise in sectarian violence in Pakistan after fighting between Sunni and Shia Muslim groups near Islamabad in November last year.

Two huge bomb attacks in Quetta in January and February last year targeting Shia from the Hazara ethnic community killed almost 200 people.
