Let's do some brainstorming. Ideas especially from those of you still in Nigeria would be most helpful.

If you were based in the UK but had connections/family still in the important cities in Nigeria (Abuja, Lagos, Calabar, Port Harcourt) what would you do to take advantage of your situation, financially speaking.

Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks.

Thanks loverbwoy- I was thinking about something along those lines.

What would you say is the average price for a mobile phone in Nigeria?
Re: Business Ideas For Nigerian In UK With Contacts In Nigeria by LoverBwoy(m): 6:40pm On May 22, 2006
well i heard some people pay very good money for high spec phones for e.g motorola V3 25,000 brand new

other phones are more expensive like nokia 8800- its should be around N100,000, sony EricssonW900- 88000

the phones in demand most are the nokia 3330,3310, and all the basic nokia and samsung, these ones sell fast but their prices are usually from N6,000-

I personally think theres more profit in the high spec fones, becuase most of the basic nokia fones are now rare in the uk and usually cost around £40 (over N10,000)

Are most of the people who have the money to buy these high spec phones importing them themselves?

Or are they going to the technology market like everyone else?
Re: Business Ideas For Nigerian In UK With Contacts In Nigeria by LoverBwoy(m): 6:01pm On May 23, 2006
well some get their phones when they travel

but the majority of them are through personal contacts basically one-one sales

the technology market aka computer village is not really well structured its rough, they sell cheap products from asian countries, there are riff raffs in the market so basically its not too comfy goin there

Ok, I think internet shopping is one of the most hassle-free ways of doing your business here. I've got leads to a few dropshippers, including a UK based one.  (Their office is in Kent)

A dropshipper is a wholesaler that stocks goods and sends them directly via post to the customer. I.e you don't make recurring trips to the Post Office. All you do is sell, collect your money and forward the delivery details to your dropshipper. If you use eBay, the customers leave you feedback to indicate when they have received their items

The UK based one specialises in computers, laptops, and their peripherals.

Alternatively, you can sell e-commerce products : web templates, e-books, etc and they offer a website, over 6000 e-books to sell (including resellers rights) plus hosting for a year.

Thanx @ Naijacutee

how competitive is their prices i mean the dropshippers price, i traded with theselect but most of their products are not in high demand plus their products are even more expensive than market price

I don't know because I haven't done business with them before, I just know they are a reliable company but I can get their price list if I'm ready to do business with them.

Business in Nigeria is risky by it's very nature.
To do any kind of business in nigeria who must first have someone you really trust as home.
Don't use your borthers or sisters.GEt someone to buy into your idea and then you can do the business together with him bringning in some money as well.

I used to buy cars from America and send down to Nigeria for sale.As a direct importer I could undercut the market by almost 500 thousand naira in some cases.For example a year 2000 Mercedes M Class can be bought for 8 thousand dollars if you have access to the right market.Shipping will cost you about 1600 dollars.Then bugdet 3000 dollars to clear the car.The car should then arrive Lagos at 12,600 dollars which is about 1.57 million naira.If you sell this car at 2.1 million or even 2 million naira you wil make a profit of 400 thousand naira.The turn around time for this including shipping used to be about 6-7 weeks.The trick is to buy in large volumes.Lets say 10.So you can afford to sell even cheaper ,turn around your cash and order more.

While Nigeria is abundant with commodities unlike the U.K, it should first only buy and sell it's commodities in Naira not $.

Service industries are the ones that are earning the most, and are less capital intensive. they rely on Human Capital. Therefore the Internet is a perfect medium for earning money by offering services created on Nigeria at nigerian rates to Western Companies. For those of us without an imgaination the following are some examples;

* Web page Design
* Company Accounts ( however issues of Trust involved here)
* Trading of Derivatives (Forex, Commodities)
* Creative Work in Advertising , Design .
* If one has relatives in the West they will have access to cheap money, i.e money loaned at low interests @ 8/10/12%
this money should be used for funding businesses , the problem is the desire to steal the money thus drain it's supply.

"Where confidence flows, money goes"

* Data entry services
* Fashion - mass production of clothes etc
* Business Online via the internet
* Selling Residential Properties to Nigerians in the Diasporia advertising on the Internet with Pictures etc and having arrangements with Nigerian Banks to have a second charge on the Expatriates Western Homes thus gaining good revenue from $,£ or Euro nominated currencies yet funding Property development growth in Nigeria.

Etc, etc, etc,

Whenever I go to Nigeria I always arrive with suitcases full of Football jerseys and gift items of Arsenal,Chelsea,Liverpool and Man U football clubs. I target the upper end of the market-those rich supporters who want to identify with Football stuff that is not easily accessible in Nigeria. There are lots of cheap Taiwan/Aba made products too, but from my experience people are ready to pay over the odds when they know that your product is original and different. I make my money from turnover and margins.
