SpringBank -- They charge me exorbitantly for each cheque that I issue and when I do not have my cheque, they charge me #250 for on-counter cheque.
Re: Games That Nigerian Banks Play To Rip Their Customers by kaboninc(m): 3:30pm On Jun 30, 2009
It is the same thing with Intercontinental Tank. Theirs is probably the worst. They were charging nothing before for atm related transations. Then they increased it to 10 naira and later it was increased it to 50 naira per transaction even if you are withdrawing only 1000 naira asides their monthly debit of 100 naira for "atm fee". They also charge 30 naira for sms alert on savings even when you are the one withdrawing on a common savings account. They also charge me for recharging my airtime on my phone. Greedy people. They keep declearing huge profits every year-end and their source- illegal charges on their customers. Not that they reward their shareholders. Till tomorrow old generation banks are still the best.
Re: Games That Nigerian Banks Play To Rip Their Customers by vinvinonyi: 3:35pm On Jun 30, 2009
My dear KABONINC,dONT JUST CONCLUDE ON FIRST GENERATION BANKS,LOOK AT THIS, ,our banks are generating income whether rend ed services or not.

First Bank is another interesting room for milking customers hard earned income through savings withdrawal slip.

This happen if you are unable to produce your withdrawal slip, you are charged #500 per withdrawal, demanding for that slip.

this is an information age, where people can withdraw their cash personally without producing police extract and or any form of document as

demanded from time to time.

Than, what is the #500 charges for?for a piece of sheet given to you to make withdrawal or for maintaining savings account.

its unacceptable charges,AS THIS IS A SAVINGS ACCOUNT,ONLY OWNER ALLOWABLE TO CASHED.

The bank will have to pay their staff. The overhead will be paid by somebody, but anyway it is bad.what can we possibly do?.
Re: Games That Nigerian Banks Play To Rip Their Customers by kaboninc(m): 3:46pm On Jun 30, 2009
@ vinvinonyi, if that's the way first bank is behaving then I will forget my account cos I just opened one just to pay in warrants. They are all thieves. My friend told me something and I'll always remember it. "You cannot prevent evil by doing evil" and that is what the banks are doing.
Re: Games That Nigerian Banks Play To Rip Their Customers by mbah1: 3:54pm On Jun 30, 2009

This can't be the first bank i know, unless First bank of Ghana, i bank with them and had never in anyway experienced any kinda deduction on my savings account except that of current account whenever a cheque is issued of which i deem negligible.

very true about Oceanic , the ATM card they gave me is not working, and their internet banking is a big joke

UBA LOL grin

pls if anybody knows any bank that is working well let him tell us, but there must a way to stop these banks from cheating us angry

YES that reminds me , First Bank charged me COT 2ice on one transaction angry
Re: Games That Nigerian Banks Play To Rip Their Customers by stagger: 6:32pm On Jun 30, 2009
UBA guys are nothing but Daylight Robbers. I wish Tony Elumelu is reading this. He should be ashamed of running a bank that consistently rips off customers by charging COT charges on savings accounts, inter-state transfers (even on savings accounts), etc.  angry angry

Then Danels Microfinance bank. Someone should start monitoring these so-called microfinance banks. Their modus operandi is not any different from the commercial banks. Just old wine in new bottles as far as I am concerned.

CAN YOU IMAGINE THIS MICROFINANCE BANK DEDUCTING N1000 FROM AN ACCOUNT EVERY MONTH? WHAT FOR?  angry angry

Needless to say that these two banks will not see a dime of my money in their accounts again. A friend of mine from Ethiopia could not believe his ears when I told him of the numerous charges these banks take.

In the same vein, I strongly wish to commend Guaranty Trust Bank. They are wonderful. No hidden charges, no minimum balance requirements, ease of transfers for forex and othe domiciliary dealings, etc. THUMBS UP!

Leave the banks alone!!!!!!!! cry cry cry cry
Re: Games That Nigerian Banks Play To Rip Their Customers by Redman44(m): 6:46pm On Jun 30, 2009
We have started again, fellow Nairalanders. I think it is time for some action We keep coming here to complain about the unorthodox practices of banks and other organizations without really doing anything to change things. It is pointless for us to fill pages of Nairaland with complaints and accusations with nothing changing at the end of the day. Perhaps, that is why organizations in Nigeria take us for granted cry cry

Sometime in 2007, I wrote a passionate and angry article about the state of the NYSC Orientation camps in the country. The article was designed as a open letter to President Yar'Adua. It was published in two Newspapers, if not three. And also online. The article led to some orientation camps getting closed and boarded down. Corpers were merged with their colleagues in states that had manageable orientation camps. Lagos state hosted hundreds of corpers from other states for the 3 weeks orientation programme. I also received e-mails from from Nigerians who commended me on the article.

I am not important. I'm not seeking for attention here. Our complaints about the bad practices and unmerited deductions by our banks need to go beyond this site. We need to get our complaints onto the pages of national newspapers. We need to write collective articles and do something collectively to stop these modern day robberies carried out by some Nigerian banks. I believe we can change things if we care enough about the problem. Cheers.

@reddman44 thanks so much. What do we do?.
Re: Games That Nigerian Banks Play To Rip Their Customers by Redman44(m): 7:31pm On Jun 30, 2009
@pappy2000

Thanks for the question. Banks are there for us. They need us more than we need them. It is not the other way round. We need some form of collective action. We don't need to carry placards and march on the streets or picket the banks to express our grievances. This is because Nairalanders are scattered all over the world. Nairaland has given us the opportunity to come together online and share ideas. There is power in collective action, mates. So here is the plan.

1. We need to write about three well crafted articles about this situation to Nigerian Newspapers and Magazines.
2. We need to pull our ideas and complaints together so that the writers among us will have materials to add flesh to their articles.
3. We need a collective name for this movement against the banks and their ridiculous charges.
4. We have to open a blog page on .com that will contain our experiences. This blog will be edited and moderated by a good blogger among us. The blog will be added as a footer to our three articles so that Nigerians and the international community can read it.
5. We need pictures of some of the banks.
6. We dont want saboteurs among us. No negative view should be tolerated.
7. We need to start work asap.

I have given some ideas. Let others follow suit. Lets work on this together. I don't want any position here. I'm just contributing my quota to our salvation from the banks. More ideas, please. Cheers.

i think we need to have as much proof to show to the regulatory bodies such as the House of rep, senate. that is the only way we can have their full support and attention, the media cnnot be overemphasised. we will be helping the general masses who are not as vigilant too. it is high time Nigerians started rejecting every attempt to insult our common intelligence.
